SKY IRELAND TV & BROADBAND POOR OFFER TO RENEW

    Hi,

Every year Sky Ireland Jack up their prices hitting me and most customes with increased direct debits before renewal which is sharp practice. I spent hours on to them recently and their final special offer was an almost 40% increase on last year. I told them I couldn't afford that and I would have to cancel. In cancellation process at present. With them over 12 years supposedly VIP customer. Whereas I want to stay with Sky I find them increasingly more difficult and frustrating to deal with each year and loyalty seems not to matter much to them. They don't make life easy. Any ideas for strategy to deal with them? If push comes to shove what are Virgin like to negotiate renewal with when their introductory offers expire ?

Unfortunately you need to move every year at this stage. Sky know that since they are discontinuing Sky Q and pushing the Sky Stream and other TV providers all only offer Streaming TV, that people who want to stick with Q will have no option but to stay with them.

Moving every year is the only option these days. Although I managed a 2 year contract with Eir, 5gb broadband, TV with Multi room and 3 sim only plans for 100 a month which wasn't bad at all.

I agree with the sentiment. Good customers should be rewarded not punished.

But if next years profits is all a business cares about, then the evidence is there that a large no of their customers will not switch to get a better deal. So they target attracting new customers with the budget they have, as it provides a better return on that budget because the number of new customers attracted will exceed those that leave.

A longer term view would be to build a loyal customer base that values your brand. But then how many businesses/employees/boards/shareholders just worry about getting their bonuses this year and how many will sacrifice short term gain for long term aims? Very few is the evidence.

As a consumer you just have to accept the market conditions.

That's the standard price with eir for that service. I have identical but 5 mobiles and one of them is the 14.99 tariff which includes international calls

We had the same messing with Sky and I decided to jump ship and cancel. They made a mess of my cancellation and made a bigger mess of my equipment return. Since I cancelled I have had 13 different calls with them and finally - 2 months later- it looks like everything is sorted.

But I would never deal with them again.

We went with a 4k freesat box which plugs in to our sky disk and is perfect for our TV watching and recording needs. As it is UK channels only we also have soarview for Ireland channels but they are rarely get watched. Given the monthly cost of this is zero I dont know why I stayed with Sky/Virgin for so many years.

Is it a straight plug into the Sky Q dish or dos you have to change anything

Freesat, saorview, Netflix and Amazon prime will give you everything except sport for about €20 a month.

Why anyone stays with sky perplexes me unless they really need the sports.

A newer sky dish that connects to their Sky Q box uses wideband LNB and the Freesat box is directly compatible with this. So yes, you just plug and play.

We were basically same, to try and get us to stay after the year of paying €50 p/m for broadband, Sky Stream and Netflix the best they were willing to do was €89 p/m without Netflix included.

Swapped to Virgin for basically the same package for €57 p/m for 2 years because I'm not bothered going through the same nonsense again next year.

How can I check this wideband LNB exists for me? Got sky dish installed in 2021. Can I ask what Freesat box you are using?

If you had sky q then it’s a wideband dish.
I got the Freesat 4k 500G recordable box. It’s on Amazon.

Thinking of getting rid of SKY and getting one of these. Is the box good. Was it straight forward to tune. How many channels does it receive. I know it doesn't pick up soarview channels. Thanks

The interface is good but not as slick as the Sky Q interface. I think there are about 170 channels. Its easy enough to set up. Connect the cables, plug it in to power and the interface takes you thru the rest. It will ask for a UK postcode and will tune the UK regional variations based off that.

That's great. Wasn't expecting it to be as good as SkyQ, which is great. Contract up shortly for TV/Broadband so have to go through the annual dance. Though from comments here not expecting any good deal so will cancel and order the box from Amazon. Thanks for the info
