Anyone else get signed out of the EirTV box ?

I have been randomly signed out of the Apple TV app a couple of times over the past week.

I’ve also noticed it’s started randomly pausing whatever is playing, not buffering just stops playback. When I press the play button again it jumps forward to live. Never had this problem before. Anyone else have this happening?

Very interesting. I wonder how that breaks down in age groups as I'd guess it's very skewed towards iOS for under 25s.

In Switzerland, eir's sister company Salt gives customers the option of either Apple tv or Android depending on their own preference.

Just on a different issue, does anyone else think the picture quality on the sd channels is very good ? It seems to be upscaled or something, the same sd channels on Sky are nowhere near as good.

"Came back" after a few hours - didn't have to re login or anything

If it’s on your Eir WiFi I don’t think you have to actually log in with credentials, just hit log in and it should automatically log you in.

I was plagued by this issue for a few months. Turned out that the setting "ALLOW TV PROVIDER TO ACCESS eir TV" was set to off. (This setting is under Settings - Profiles and Accounts.)

No one else goes near these settings, so maybe it was changed by a software update. Anyway, set it to "ON" and so far so good.

I don't suppose you remember where in settings? I've been logged out of all devices!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,609 ✭✭✭NewClareman

Yeah, it just happened to our final Apple TV in the Sittingroom this evening. I updated the software, after being logged out.
With the latest software you set it in two locations:

    1. Profiles and Accounts - TVProvider eir - "ALLOW TV PROVIDER TO ACCESS eir TV" - set it to On
    2. The setting is: Settings - Apps - eirTV - TV Provider set it to Always

If you have multiple profiles the first setting would have to be set each time.

Can anyone tell me if eir tv will work in another house, say a holiday home, where obviously the internet/ip address is different ?

The Apple/Android TV streaming pucks are tied to your account address. However, the eir TV mobile app works away from home, and offers the same eir TV experience and user interface, so you could stream from your phone to a TV in your holiday home using Google Chromecast or equivalent.

I've never been able to get it to work on iPad or iOS on the iPhone - always says I've exceeded my number of devices, but there's none on the website. When I try to remove them it tells me I have to wait a month or whatever, and it's always another month. I just gave up. Too much faffing about with it and I don't bother watching on mobile devices anyway.

Does it have to be an Apple TV box with an Eir remote or can I use one from Harvey Norman for example?

An Apple TV box from anywhere. I bought one from Apple and it asked me if I wanted to install the Eir TV app.

I am thinking of signing up to Eir broadband for 24months and they offer TV for 15euro per month incl Amazon prime. I'm wondering if Netflix on the EIR android box is just the APP and I will have to pay my usual Netflix subscription , or is it actually Netflix included with Eir TV?? I suspect its just the app? Thanks.

Correct, the Netflix app is on the Android box, but you must have a Netflix subscription to use it, Amazon Prime is free from eir, if you take the TV package. By the way, its an android box, so it has the Google Play store, so you can download any app that's on the Play store, including RTE Player, Virgin Play etc.

RTE Tv stations now allow to replay all the programs, pity BBC does not allow the same again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,590 ✭✭✭galtee boy

Good to have 7 day roll back on the epg now for RTE 1&2, its extremely fast, the minute you press play, the programme instantly starts from the beginning, no pre roll ads. However I didn't realise you can't fast forward the programme, you can rewind once you've started, but you can't go forward. This is the same for all the channels that have 7 day roll back. That is a pity, maybe they'll allow fast forwarding at some stage.

This is an acceptable compromise. It was a bad move by RTE to block this, and actually would have resulted in less RTE being watched (at least in my house).

BBC have dug their heels in, they’re a lost cause and will never allow recording/replay outside the UK on streaming services.

Also, just noticed that RTE have now been added to the On Demand section, so presumably programmes going back 7 days will be available to watch, easier than scrolling through 7 days of the epg. Don't know yet if stuff older than 7 days will be available. But all things considered, big improvement from eir/RTE, doesn't replace full recording, but it does help.

I agree since RTE stop allow this, I had watch a lot less of the channels, I am happy that is reasonable compromise. BBC policy is strange for all streaming services, I wonder how mini BBC iplayer on Sky stream is working out ? Why that cannot be offer to other services.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,590 ✭✭✭galtee boy

I guess Sky have a lot more negotiating power with the BBC than the Irish streaming services have, hence the " mini Iplayer on Sky Ireland, though it's officially called BBC on Demand and its extremely limited compared to the actual iPlayer. But I agree, even the limited BBC on Demand would be great on eir tv and the other Irish streamers, but I can't see it happening.

BBC are public service in the UK, so get hammered If they don't provide access. However, in Ireland they're paid for by royalty fees by sky, virgin, eir and Vodafone, and since they don't run ads, they don't really care whether you watch their content or not - you're paying for them once they're carried. Hence, they don't seem to bothered about whether their programming is accessible here or not - there's no commercial incentive for them to do so. It's basically just being treated as a simple linear TV service here.

I find I hardly watch BBC anymore - programming is weaker than it used to be, and I just tend to not bother.

At the time Sky said they had an exclusive deal with the BBC for catch up access. That was two or three years ago though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,590 ✭✭✭galtee boy

I suspect Sky are not about to give up that exclusivity any time soon.

Don't know what's going on, but the restart programme and 7 day epg roll back on the RTE channels has been removed again this afternoon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 154 ✭✭edward901

You are right. Gone on the Rte channels. Still working on Rte News and Virgin Media.I hope the programme replay function is restored on Rte.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,520 ✭✭✭✭Hurrache

There is no proper BBC catch-up or player service on Sky Ireland. You might get random one or two programs but that's it, you usually get a message that this program is not available in your region.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,590 ✭✭✭galtee boy

I had SkyQ last year, BBC on Demand was on it, was it the iPlayer no, was it better than nothing yes, I would take it on eir tv no problem. Anyway, whatever about the BBC, RTE are really acting the maggot as regards streaming tv services in Ireland, why can't they allow recording and fair enough, not allow fast forwarding of the adverts ? Surely that would keep the advertisers happy ?
