F1 was always peak technology, to go back to old technology makes no sense. Synthetic fuels are an inefficient way to burn fuel, limited in availability and hard to scale up.

F1 can commit suicide like the European car manufacturers who missed the eTrain and cater to the handful of petrolheads that have a ardent memory of the past that is long gone.

The historic F1 races, with cars from the 80s, 70s attract 100 people on a weekend with free entry, F1 with the unloved hybrid systems 300000 paying 200 upwards.

People seem to not understand the F1 couldn't, even if they wanted to, go full electric. Formula E, as long as it exists, has the sole rights to electric racing for at least another two decades. There's no appetite for an electric F1 series anyway. I'm positive these regs were accelerate a return to simpler v8. They've really made complete balls up, with these specs.

That makes as much sense as saying F1s current success is down to David Croft.

I am intrigued by these new regulations - I feel there's going to be a huge difference across the various teams/engine manufacturers and will be so obvious once racing begins. What will be interesting is how fast the development happens across the field once they figure out how to manage them PU the best. But from what I can see, there'll be games played mid race with each driver trying to use one system against another to overtake/defend. Fun times…

It’s formula racing - the reg’s are what puts the formula into formula 1.
if it was a free for all, you’d have something unsafe and it would go absolutely nowhere. The regs also ensure teams can’t take unnecessary risks while pushing the boundaries of speed and aerodynamics.

These regs however were presented I thought as making the cars smaller and less complicated (less drs and 50:50 hybrid etc etc).

However, from reading more about it after the testing, even things like launching the cars at start lines now seem to be massively complicated, and I’d agree with VER if what he said bears out in reality - that in Barcelona doing quali laps he was lifting and coasting for about 600m in total in order to regen the battery for better usage elsewhere in the lap, which is not really what quali laps should be.

Suddenly it all seems more complicated not less :)

I also saw Gasly saying that if all 22 cars get off the grid at lights out in Aus without bogging down, it’ll be a miracle 😀

So race starts are going to be chaotic. This season could be like the 80s and 90s all over again

The Race podcast mentioned last week that Ferrari raised possible issues with starts over a year ago but the other manufacturers didn't want to change regs. So Ferrari adapted their turbo (I believe) to aim for better starts. With the other teams are now kicking up a fuss I'd be very annoyed if I was Ferrari if there is a push to change procedures. They adapted, why not everyone else? (similar to how I think Mercedes are getting a raw deal if the compression ratio rules change)

Second week of testing at Bahrain begins today.

And it’s live on Sky thankfully. Unfortunately we have to listen to Crofty. 😁

their different turbo also means they don’t have to go into 1st gear at some of the corners.

Melbourne is going to be interesting for sure 👌

The time dfferences are still mad. Think the early races could be total chaos

Cadillac 7.5 second off the Ferrari of LEC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,798 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Have to assume Cadillac are purposefully running slow. They've the same Ferrari engine.

If thats remotely genuine they could find themselves falling foul of the 107% rule like Hispania did.

Left with about 30 left and think it was down to about 7 seconds in the end. Even if they close the gap a little it still leaves them being lapped 3/4 times.

it was 4sec at the end, PER did one flying lap with a few mins to go, but was hampered by the red flag tests

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,091 ✭✭✭Paddy_Mag

Thats still huge. The cars look a handful too. Who just could make the season interesting

Early problem for Stroll in the Aston in the afternoon session, car issue rather than driver this time but beached it. More time lost and we got a quick look at the underneath of the car as it was hoisted away. Not sure Newey has been to these testing sessions so far? Anyway, Sky showed some nice side on comparison shots between the Aston, McLaren and Ferrari - way more rake on the Aston (like previous Red bulls had). Also, the Haas with the white/black/red colour scheme looks pretty nice imo.

I swear when I saw the red flag because of Stroll I groaned but thankfully it was the car and not him. Antonelli looked good, Perez looked almost depressed and now Ferrari have Hamilton's garage faced off with blinds

Looks like Merc (and their customer teams) will be fine to run their engines as is for the first half of the season at least. There's a vote next week to introduce a new compression ratio test from August onwards - to also test the ratio at 130°C rather than just at ambient temps.

Issues around homologation of fuel now too

Mercedes having issues which impacts those using their engines.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the possibility of rolling starts if there are issues.

I know it's only testing and only half the field but this start looks so slow.

Michael O Carroll, former RTÉ producer who was the man in charge for the late 90s F1 coverage had died.

    This too shall pass.

This is pretty cool! Check out the video in the below link - Ferrari testing a new rear wing that flips upside down in straight mode rather than open up like everyone else. Not sure they'll end up running it in races but love seeing innovations like this.

    https://www.skysports.com/f1/video/33726/13509388/f1-ferrari-reveal-innovative-upside-down-rear-wing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,575 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

I wonder if the slight increase of drag when the wing flips in the first place would affect the overall benefit? There will be a split second when the wing is basically fully facing the wind (i.e. as it rotates through 90 degrees).

But yep - love a bit of differentiation and innovation…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,647 ✭✭✭sk8board

saw that - was mad to see the reaction to it on the tv feed.
in theory it’s brilliant, if it’s allowed by the regs (apparently the regs doesn’t specify which side of the wing has to be pointing up or down) - the rear wing temporarily becomes an airplane wing on the straights and reduces drag

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,091 ✭✭✭Paddy_Mag

Knowing Ferrari it will get stuck bolt upright at some point

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49,304 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

What impact would the Ferrari wing trick have on a car following them? I assume the shape of the wind coming off the back of the Ferrari would be very different to a normal configuration, but would it effectively clear out more air, or make it dirtier for the cars behind?

Alonso’s Aston Martin came to a halt on track so he gets a lift back to the pits in a black Mustang - sounded great it did! Aston proper struggling so far.
