Green Beans? where to buy

hi all

did a search and its years since this was asked, im getting back into raosting after a 7 year absence i used to get my greens from Discount Coffee but they have been out of stock for ages, I assume brexit has scuppered buying in the uk? where might i get greens at a reasonable price, (the price of coffee these days has floored me!) it seem dearer to buy greens and roast than buying roasted beans nowadays, thanks

yeah spotted discount coffee got a restock so picked some up, as guys who have looked further afield how do you rate their beans, yeah im sure they are cheap and generic as reflected by the price but are the dearer beans that much better, im a hobbyist and enjoy the process as much as the coffee that ends up in the cup.

I got into all this 20 years ago but shelved all my kit after a grinder issue and general waning of the interst at the time, my daughter did a stint in a coffee shop last summer and was asking and we get an espresso machine so i dusted off the old kit, I have a Baby Gaggia D (the stormtrooper as it was nicknamed (circa 2005) a Mazzer Mini E and the original Gene Cafe roaster, my gaggia is pretty much stock, i got a bottomless PF, the rancilio silvia wand everyone gets and am currently dabbling with OPV spring mod, its adjustable on my Baby and accessible without taking the machine apart, i just surf the temps…loads has happened since i took a (long) rest from the hobby, WDT tools, spring loaded tamps, spritzing beans, levelling tools, normcore everything etc etc,

I know taste is subjective, but I actually prefer the blend I roast from my Discount Coffee order: 2/3 Kenyan 1/3 Colombian (roasted separately then blended after... Kenyan a hotter /quicker/lighter roast and the Columbian a bit slower and slightly darker).

The beans I bought from koffiebranderijdekoepoort.nl were still good (I bought 5kg Rwandan, 5kg Brazilian and 5kg of Tanzanian decaf) are all excellent. But I slightly prefer the (much cheaper) blend from Discount Coffee so just ordered 10kg while they have stock.

I'm roasting in the behmor 2020SR, grinding with mahlkonig x54 and making espresso using Nuova Simonelli Oscar II, mostly flat whites.

Nothing wrong with discountcoffee.ie - kilo for kilo they're by far the cheapest option and perfect for most home-roasters. I just really like sweet natural-process coffees, and you don't really get those from discountcoffee.ie, so I'm willing to spend a little more to get my perfect coffee (like €15-€20/kg). I did take a look, and they list two of their coffees as natural process: Brazil Santos, and Kenya AA. I've roasted kilos of all of their green coffees (including those two), but just haven't been able to reproduce the same natural sweet taste, I can from other suppliers (Mondo del Caffè, Roast Rebels).

Mondo del Caffè don't seem to be doing green coffee any more, and Roast Rebels are just too expensive, so when my current 5kg of Kolumbien El Encanto Natural runs out, I'll have to find somewhere else. I'll probably try koffiebranderijdekoepoort.nl, and failing that, discountcoffee. Badger and Dodo used to sell green coffee, but similarly priced to their roast coffee, so little point (other than freshness). These guys also do green beans from Ireland: https://www.coffeeshop.ie/coffee/green-coffee (same company as Brady's, I beleive), and I've bought from them before. At €22/kg approx, they're middle/upper tier pricing, but they also do 250g bags of green beans, if you want to try their coffees. Sometimes I like to buy green and roasted of the same variety to compare.

BTW: I'm using a Behmor 1600, though I reckon it's on its last legs and I'll have to look for another roasting solution pretty soon.

any thought on profiles/heat ramping etc for the discount coffee varieties? i know we have different roasters but i assume the general idea is the same? i bought the brazil, columbian, sumatra and kenyan, open to suggestions on roast levels as well please, i always used to roast medium/city and never anywhere near oily, i did some brazil and columbian last night, plan to do a bit of the other two tonight, i used this as a start from Roast Rebels…scroll down a bit for profiles in english, cheers

EDIt: agh, i see they have the Honduran and Nicaraguan listed now, they were both out of stock when i ordered, have i missed out with those two varieties?

I see roast rebels has some profiles some of the discountcoffee beans (e.g. Brazil Santos). Also check out https://www.sweetmarias.com/ (for roasting guidelines, not for buying beans - they're in the US).

The Behmor is a pretty different beast. For naturals, I use 1:45 Preheat + P2/1Lb (for about 350g), 1st crack + 75 seconds and dump straight into my bean cooler (I don't cool in the roaster). For African washed coffees, I use 1:45 Preheat + P3 1Lb (350g), 1st crack + 90 seconds and dump into cooler. Not very transferrable! Both would be very light roasts, which I use for either flat white or V60.

cheers, apprevciate the answwer but tbh thats double dutch to me, P3 1lb?, the gene in on temps so the roast rebels makes sense, ie preheat to 200c for ten mins, beans in, 240 til first crack, roll off to 225 til done, different machines of course, thanks

Meant to say, I tried these guys and picked up 8kg of different natural coffees. I've only roasted one of them so far, but very happy with the service, pricing and packaging. Will definitely be a repeat customer, as long as they keep selling naturals at keen prices. Thanks for the pointer xDerp!
