Footballers travel to Enniskillen tomorrow for a fairly crucial game in the national football league against fermanagh, a win would give us an outside chance of promotion but a defeat would leave us in a relegation dogfight with 4 games to go ,

No sign of a fermanagh team but they are missing a few key players from last year no more so than the cullen brothers who were excellent in the park last year , fermanagh have had their problems under declan bonner this year but the likes of garvan jones josh largo ellis and Stephen McGullion look to be improving all the time and brian mcnamara had a tough time against darragh mcguran the last time the two crossed paths

clare are again missing a large number of players from the previous campaign, evan cahill , sean mcallister , ciaran downes , emmett mcmahon and keelan sexton played in the same fixture last season none of which are on the panel tomorrow, while cillian rouine only makes the bench which makes the trip across the border that much tougher

6 players is a lot to be down but with the return of daragh bohannon , and daniel walsh to the side we will need to be hitting the 20 point mark if we are to be heading down the road with 2 points tomorrow evening

    Fermanagh 0-18 2-18 Clare

A huge win for the footballers after two early defeats against westmeath and down , struggling fermanagh made 4 changes form the recent 7 point loss to sligo and it seemed to work , 10 minutes into the game the home side led 0-4 to 0-2 before ronan lanigan intercepted a daragh mcgurn pass to take off down the field to set up Aaron griffin to put clare in the lead

over the next 15 minutes fermanagh played most of the football missed several opportunities most from distance , mark mcinerney kept the clare scoreboard ticking over, by the time Griffin kicked his first point from play clare were 3 points up on the 30minute mark , cillian rouine went close with a goal chance not long after it remained 1-10 to 0-10 at half time

Fermanagh started like a train in the second half , initially kicking 3 wides they went on to kick 5 points unanswered within the first 12 minutes , clares first score of the half came on the 47th minute from a mark McInerny free , the last 20 minutes clare physically dominated the game and out scored fermanagh by 1-05 to 0-3 with daniel walsh getting the second goal

fermanagh didn't score for the last ten minutes of the game as clare pulled away with points from mcinerney , shane griffin and eoin cleary, stephan ryan pulled off a late save from conor love at point blank range but in the end it was a hard fought win and hopefully a sign paul maddens men have turned a corner

    Clare scorers

    Mark McInerney 0-8, 5f

    Aaron Griffin 1-4,

    Daniel Walsh 1-0

    Eoin Cleary 0-3

    Brian McNamara 0-2

    Shane Griffin 0-1

Did anyone make an impression off the bench or will there be any changes outside of those who are injured?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,053 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

A lot of injuries at the moment has the panel down to it's bare bones but cailfhionn o'dea and Shane Griffin made big impacts off the bench, Gavin Murray is used now as just a 20 minute finisher now too

    Kildare 3:14 Clare 0-27

A poor first half display coincided with terrible pitch conditions and an excellent kildare side made tonight's game in newbridge a real battle , cathal mccabe had the ball in the back of the net after 4 minutes after eamon foudy got caught in two minds and kept a ball in play that was going wide only for the kildare man to pounce

8 minutes later , jack sheridan punished poor clare defending when clearing their lines with a second goal made the scoreline 2-2 to 0-6 points , clare were rattled and kildare led for the rest of the half as a result , in an error ridden first half clares best performers were the new lads in diarmuid stritch and senan dunford who accounted for 4 points in the half, dunfords second had the scores 2-08 to 0-11 points at half time

stritch and dunford again at the start of the second half drove clare on again in the first five minutes of the half until tony kelly and mark rodgers between took control of the game from that point on , several points from the two along with two excellent cathal malone points had clare 7 points up on the 70th minute , in injury time eamon foudy had to make a point blank save to prevent the excellent muris curtain a point blank goal chance , before sheridan finished with a brilliant goal from a free with the last puck of the game

for the hosts , jack sheridan , muris curtain, gerry keegan and cathal dowling were excellent , for clare , cathal malone made a huge impact after being introduced in the second half, diarmuid stritch ,senan dunford , tony kelly and mark rodgers were the winning of the game against an impressive kildare side in harsh conditions , highlights on monday night on tg4

    clare scorers

    Tony Kelly 0-8
    Mark Rodgers 0-8
    Diarmuid stritch 0-3
    cathal Malone 0-2
    senan dunford 0-3
    ryan taylor 0-1
    jack o'neill 0-1
    shane Meehan 0-1

The footballers welcome Laois to the park tomorrow in what will be another tight encounter , last year was a classic that went down to the wire , both teams are much changed from that fixture with laois starting only 8 from last years encounter while clare are starting 10 from that night in portlaois

Laois are in transition playing a completely different 15 against wexford than the win over sligo last time out and the draw with limerick , both teams are unlikely to be relegated but a win for either side will ease any chance of that outcome with 3 games remaining

the visitors have the stronger bench given the amount of injuries currently plaguing paul maddens side , laois have the likes of ronan coffey and niall corbet to call upon if needed , both caused us huge problems ast year while paul kingston is also on the bench cooraclare goalkeeper killian roche will have justin mcnulty well briefed on who to look out for especially his neighbour from cree in the middle of the clare midfield , like last years encounter though clare will have to be hitting the 20+ mark again if they want to get over the line here

Kildare are a tidy well coached team with some very good hurlers and had they not had a load of wides in the second half they would have won this game. Clare were sloppy and you got the feeling that some of the players took this game for granted. Some people were questioning why Tony Kelly was selected for a game like this but without his 8 points we were going home with nothing.

Very impressed with the spectator facilities in St. Conleth's Park but it must be said that the pitch surface is beyond shocking.

    Clare 0-24 Laois 2-15

Evan O'Carroll kicked 1-5 for the visitors today but will rue a missed penalty midway through the second half and a last minute 13 minute free which turned the game on its head, on the 34th minute with clare leading by a point O'Carrolls free went wide from 13 meters out , clare won the resulting kickout and worked the ball down field for eoin cleary to kick his 12th point of the game with 20 seconds on the clock , killian roches kick out was intercepted and quickly converted by substitute jamie stack

Laois captain Brian byrne was givin a straight red for an incident off the ball on the 23rd minute , laois held on to a one point lead at half time 0-9 0-8 . clare failed to kick on with a strong wind at their backs early in the second half and a rasper from o'carroll put the visitors 4 points up . 3 quick points from aaron griffin got clare back on terms before cillian brennan was black carded for a foul on o'carroll , he missed the resulting penilty but for the next 10 minutes clare struggled with teams 14 a side

most of clares attacked were micro managed through either ikem or dermot coughlin but it was far too predictable and laois started to push on again and caught clare on the break for several scores , most notably laois's second goal which was from a clare turn over in an attacking position and quickly punished at the other end of the field by paddy o'sullivan ,points form cleary , griffin and cormac stied the ship before the late flurry of scores after the o'connell missed free

overall a poor performance , but with all the injuries at the moment its an important one to ese any relegation worries

    clare scorers

    Eoin Cleary 0-12

    aaron griffin 0-5

    mark mcinerney 0-2

    dermot coughlin 0-1

    Cormac murray 0-1
    Jamie stack 0-1

i knew it would be a battle after they going to parnell park the week after we played dublin and held their own , they have a good side for sure but some of the big names were very poor for clare again one in particular

Why are we playing John Conlon centre back in the league when everyone knows that he won't be there for the championship.

i have no idea , i imagine the plan was to reintroduce him there but hes lost too much pace for the position , i cant understand it either

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,469 ✭✭✭ollaetta

As someone said on another forum, if the one in particular is struggling to make an impact against the Joe McDonagh teams then it's very difficult to see him as a starter come April.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,053 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

i am hoping like everyone else that last night was down to lack of interest rather than continued lack of form , but if it continues he cant start against waterford

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,053 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

league tables after the weekend , hurlers need one point from the last two games to confirm promotion against either carlow or wexford , tough as both games are we need to be improving on last night and win both

Footballers depleted as they are will be disappointed they didnt win one of the first two games , a win will almost guarantee football at this level again next year but you would imagine we need to be aiming higher than that

A man up and playing with the storm Clare should have put this game to bed, but did everything in their power to lose it. Sideline way too slow to address obvious issues on the field and make substitutions, their inexperience is really showing. Good shooting from Cleary, Griffin and Murray when he was eventually introduced got Clare out of jail combined with a missed penalty and 13 metre free from Laois. A lot of issues to be rectified and some very strange selection calls, Limerick in Rathkeale is going to be really really tough.

Cusack Park was in amazing condition, what a pitch one of the best in the country, kudos to whoever is responsible.

its a very predictable brand of football almost a return to the style of play used by collins a few years ago , very little kicking all working off the shoulder up the field and patiently waiting for a shot on goal , the issue on sunday was we are missing about 7 players for various reasons so it was a combination of lack of experience and players playing out of possition

if the turnovers are fixed and we get a few of the injuries sorted things will improve fairly fast , its a good win considering but one we could have and probably should have lost , a frustrating watch but the win is the most important thing at this stage

Manager interviews from the weekend from Nicolas rynne on youtube , starting with a very ahm am…a very cagy…am interview from am…brian lohan 😆, Paul Madden was a little more direct , and not too confident about injuries for saturday evening in limerick

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,053 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

Its Probably not such a bad thing that we have entered silly season aa far as the league is concerned for both the hurlers and footballers , the footballers go up against Evan taltys coached limerick team , talty is one of the best coaches in the country and will be with us in the near future, but i imagine tomorrow night he will be all out to stop us

both teams are decimated at the moment , clare have 9 injuries leading in to this game but here is the team

    Clare
    1: Stephen Ryan (Kilrush Shamrocks)

    2: Alan Sweeney (St Breckan’s)
    3: Ronan Lanigan (Éire Óg)
    4: Manus Doherty (Éire Óg)

    5: Brendy Rouine (Ennistymon)
    6: Connor Meaney (Lissycasey)
    7: Ikem Ugwueru (Éire Óg)

    8: Brian McNamara (Cooraclare)
    9: Cillian Brennan (Clondegad)

    10: Daniel Walsh (Kilmurry Ibrickane)
    11: Dermot Coughlan (Kilmurry Ibrickane)
    12: Joshua Vaughan (Ennistymon)

    13: Mark McInerney (Éire Óg)
14: Eoin Cleary (St Joseph’s Miltown)
    15: Aaron Griffin (Lissycasey)

    Subs:
    16: Tristan O’Callaghan (St Breckan’s)
17: Cormac Murray (St Joseph’s Miltown)
    18: Jamie Stack (St Breckan’s)
    19: Michael Nash (St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield)
    20: Gearóid Cahill (Corofin)
    21: Joseph Rafferty (St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield)
    22: Fionn Kelleher (St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield)
23: Gavin Murray (Éire Óg Inis)
    24: Shane Griffin (Lissycasey)
    25: Morgan Garry (Clondegad)
    26: Luke Pyne (Éire Óg)

the hurlers face carlow , a huge banana skin of a fixture if last year is to go by anything , tony had to take us out of the fire last week hopefully the same wont apply this week , a few duds in the camp have been dropped a few have been given a last chance, likes of conor lean and david fitzgerald ,its not 2024 any more and these lads really need to step up before championship

the future is all over this team with the brilliant jamie moylan down as starter, along with jack o'neill and diarmuid stritch look to be close to starters come championship , another would be sean rynne, especially on his tipperary form in the championship ,niall o'farrell and john corneally are not are away either , colm o'Meara has yet to put a foot wrong this year , hopefully we see a better game from dylan mcmahon , funny thing is he is more suited to a dryer ground , before his injury in 2024 he probably was the best corner back in the county after adam hogan

heres the team , another 15 minutes of fame for jack O'Neill , not that he needed the first 15 😂

Two of the injured players are obvious, but who are the other 5 ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,469 ✭✭✭ollaetta

1-15 to 0-8 at half time at Dr. Cullen Park. Clare wasteful and Quilligan had to brilliantly save to prevent a Carlow goal.

Was in Rathkeale tonight , comfortable win for the footballers against a below par limerick side , limerick opened the scoring with an early goal through cillian fahey , Eliah Riordan taged on another 3 in the first ten minutes and limerick led 1-03 to 0-1 after 15 minutes , the home side only managed one more two pointer from o'riordan again before half time , a mark mcinerney goal and 2 2 pointers had clare quickly back in the lead , after alan sweeneys point on in first half stoppage time it was 1-11 to 1-05

Second half started like it finished , clare dominated the middle 3rd , sweeney got on the score sheet again along with Brendy Rouine, Brian McNamara, Conor Meaney, and substitute Cormac Murray , eoin cleary kicked another 2 pointer late on to seal the deal , oran collins was probably limericks best player , he kept aaron griffin scoreless tonight , dermot coughlin brian mc , alan sweeney, conor meaney and cillian brennan in the new position of midfield very impressive , josh vaughan and brendy rouine had much better games tonight too

The result in portlaoise tonight gives clare an outside chance of promotion ,we would need them to lose one more game and win our remaining 2 to go up , it has the opposite effect on limerick who are now in the drop zone ahead of a trip to mullingar next

    Clare:

     Mark McInerney 1-8

    Eoin Cleary 0-7

    Alan Sweeney 0-2;

    Brendy Ryan, 0-1

    Brian McNamara,0-1

    Conor Meaney 0-1,

    Cormac Murray 0-1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,053 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

good win with such a young side out , carlow have developed into a fairly competitive side in the last few years i dont know what happened them last week , good to see shane meehan and diarmuid stritch keep up their good run of form regardless of the opposition even better to see jamie moylan start and finish his first senior intercounty game , a big future ahead of him i think

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,053 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

the injured players are excluding mcinerney who went off injured last week

Fionn Kelliher (played a few mins tonight)

    Cillian Rouine

    James curren

    Sean McAllister

    Darragh Bohannon

    Emmett McMahon

    Evan Cahill

    Caolionn O'Dea

    Fergal Guinanne

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,263 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

I was listening to Jamesie on Off The Ball.

He was saying that the league went well, but not many young/new players put their hand up to actually start in championship. That we haven't gotten as much (so far) off the recent strong U20 and minor teams as one might have hoped.

Has anybody forced their way into the championship 15? Dylan McMahon maybe ?

Also, is Eoghan Gunning not on the senior panel yet ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 806 ✭✭✭supernova5

I totally agree with Jamesie on this, most of the established starters have serious miles on the clock and its going to be a huge ask to expect them to successfully negotiate another gruelling Munster Round Robin series. We badly need 3/4 [at the minimum] of the new brigade to firmly make a strong impact

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,053 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

i would be expecting the likes of stritch, jack o'neill and sean rynne to be heavily involved in this years championship , the same for jack kirwin and niall o'farrell its likely most of these lads will be coming in off the bench though, if dathi lohan stays injury free its likely he will start in the half back line

Shane meehan will be close to starting too on his league form , there are plenty of options coming through

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,263 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

yeah it took Cathal Malone from the bench, and some Tony Kelly brilliance, to get us past Kildare

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 806 ✭✭✭supernova5

management really need to start 9/10 of these newer lads against Wexford but knowing Lohan's conservative nature he likely wont do that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,053 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

the reality is they have done that pretty much in the last few games , there isnt 9/10 young lads on the panel , those that are on the panel have all got plenty of game time , the only likely starters would be sean rynne , jack o'neill and maybe diarmuid stritch , jamie moylan is a player for the future , and niall o'farrell and jack kirwin you would imagine are going to be fringe players off the bench , and i cant see colm o'meara starting any game ahead of whats already there even though he has been good ,

dylan mcmahon is not going to be starting ahead of rory hayes or adam hogan , and john coneeley needs more games and has struggled with injuries , like moylan and mahon they are future players , dathi lohan will be a big addition if he is fit for the championship

this is what you are looking at come championship in terms of reserves
