Andy Farrell finally rings the changes with a very different looking Ireland team that has the fewest caps in the starting XV of any team this weekend. Some of this will be the usual rotation against Italy - all the more important with only one rest week this 6N - but spots in the team to face England will surely be up for grabs for everyone. The back 5 of the pack has been almost completely refreshed after a less than stellar showing against France. Ryan and Conan have been rewarded for industrious performances off the bench to start here to bring some intent and aggression from the off that was lacking in Paris. Izuchukwu is finally fit for once to show what he can do on the big stage - they will certainly be hoping his athleticism can add an element of game breaking ability up front that we sorely need. All eyes will be on Edogbo for his much anticipated appearance off the bench - he has had a torrid run of injuries and has limited top level game time but his physical abilities are easy for all to see.

Italy are coming in on a high after battling past Scotland in utterly hellish weather in Rome. It looks to be a dry track today and Italy will have to be at the top of their game to threaten an Irish team they have almost never looked close to in Dublin. They will almost certainly try and attack the scrum against a very inexperienced Irish front row - while the stalwart Furlong is there to come on and settle things, O'Toole will face challenges of his own coming on to cover loosehead - a position he has only ever started once in for Ireland A last year.

The back 3 is renewed with both wings facing the axe after a poor kick chasing performance in Paris. Baloucoune, much like his compatriot in the backrow, is someone whose opportunity should have come before now but for repeated ill-timed injuries. One can only hope he and Lowe do more than spend all their time chasing high kicks as it is not a strategy that is proving productive (or easy on the eye).

Ultimate, we can not ask for a better game than this to get over the terrible loss in Paris and try to build towards Twickenham in one week. A reset is badly needed and now we see if it will happen.

Ireland by 10, with a nervy first half and only pulling away in the last 20 once we empty our very very strong bench.

If I hear 1 more pundit or coach or player say INTENT…..I’ll scream.

Just smash them and play your game

Nervously looking forward to this afternoon. I think we will win, but probably make a bit of a meal of it to keep it in the balance up until the close.

We always rotate a bit for Italy but generally in other years the gap between ourselves and the Italians is bigger so we can better afford to. How much of the new faces is due to this typical rotation for the Italy match vs last weeks performance? It’s a tricky one with Twichenham next week to add to the mix too.

Either way I hope it’s not as close as I suspect it might be and those new faces grab their opportunities. If we learn out of today it’ll be a good thing - building for RWC 2026.

    Enjoy the game everyone!

First time in history the Irish team has a player with an African heritage (SA not included) playing in the Six nations?

I really want Baloucoune in particular to have a great game.
He has been under utilised by Farrell in my opinion.

Big game today from him and he will be hard to drop.

Izuchukwo…they spelt his name wrong numerous times in the papers last few days. He has the athletic profile to shine in a game like today. He could put his name up in lights today. Is he physical enough for Twickenham?

Edogbo. I have never seen an Irish player with his physical attributes. Could be a game changer for the pack.

Need to watch the "intent" this weekend. James Ryan and mccarthy won't be short of it, both they need to stay legal!

Other than a silly red card, I can't see ireland losing. Ireland by 30-40

Balacoune is injured more times than. He has not be under utilised by Farrell. He is just not available for selection

Ian Madigan is good, no? Preference is ITV always.

No he has been under utilised in both how he plays and how Ireland play and was subsequently dropped.

Yes he also has had a heap of injuries.

Is kicking the ball into the sky utilising Baloucoune or Stockdale effectively?
I would say it was a disaster of a plan for Stockdale in France. Now he’s dropped. A brutal selection decision from Farrell.

Today Baloucoune will have a field day against Ioane.

It would be nice to see Ireland actually try and play a game that utilises his blistering pace by getting him into the game.

The reason trotted out for his exclusion is that he stays on his wing. It’s the coaches job to tweak their game plan to suit the players that he picks.

Looking forward to the 9 10 combo. Think Gibson Park has been looking very one dimensional for some time now so happy to see him on the bench

Got it. Last game he played was against South Africa. Space is always at a premium. Wasn't a standout. He was injured since. It is a player than will provide a better outlet for the high ball tactic no doubt.

Even with Ulster, stockdale just doesn't look great at wing. Stockdales best performances have come from full back. He wasn't even on the captains run yesterday. Barring injury, I think AF has made his mind up.

    Ringroses are red,

    Italy are blue,

    A victory would be sweet

    I Lowe you.

For the day that is in it.

I know the Italians might do romance better, but we should still comfortably beat them today at Rugby (I hope).

That's a more dominant carry from McCarthy than anything he made last week.
