They really are doing a fantastic job with this telling of the story, excellent so far and getting better and better, brilliant ending to episode 4, and the music. Fantastic.

Absolutely brilliant in a low key but high stakes tension kind of way. Big speeches and big build ups are always better than big battles

Very enjoyable series, the first 2 episodes were a bit slow but its hitting its stride now.

yep very good show, pity episodes so short

Must be the new Netflix generation with low attention spans

It is based on a short novel / novella so there's not a lot of material. Not sure why they went for 6 short episodes rather than 4 regular ones. Short attention span hmm or think people more likely to squeeze in a weekly episode if short or think shorter length suits the lighter material v GoT. Not sure.

It probably could be wrapped up in a 2 hour movie with tighter editing.

Ah dang only 6 episodes, assumed HBO were gonna milk this for years 😞

Hold that thought. There's three novellas in the series so far, GRRM might have notes for others. So we could be here a while although that will pose issues when you have a child actor in key role.

Streaming has generally lead to much longer episode run times. The greatest hit of "the Netflix generation" had a final season where the episodes were practically movies.

30min episodes are a thing from the average Boards users generation.

Really enjoying it. End of episode 4 was a bit goosebumpy, then the theme song set in. Class

The Novella was adapted into a 6 part comic series so perhaps that is why there are 6 episodes.

Really enjoying this series, hard to believe there are only two more episodes. Someone mentioned accents earlier, Dunc sounds a lot like my brother-in-law, who is very Irish, but with a deeper voice.

There's 3 novellas published, I saw on a Youtube commentary that GRRM has apparently given Ira Parker notes for another 6 stories he has planned for Dunk and Egg (and allegedly rather more detailed ones than he gave Benioff and Weiss for Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring).

The ageing is less of an issue that it might be on other series as the second novella takes place a year and a half after the first and the third has a similar gap so assuming a 2 year gap between each round of filming, young Dexter Sol Ansell should actually be ageing at roughly the right pace for the story!

Hugely enjoyable so far and I went in with low(ish) expectations. Generally not too big on spin offs, but this yarn is hitting all the right notes with me.

So far the only mark against it is Peter Claffey's wandering accent and that's a very tiny nit pick. Seems to go from Connacht to Dorsetshire and back again in the blink of an eye. Even so, he's playing the loveable dolt really well and it's Westeros so who cares. He's a fine pick for the role.

Hope they keep the quality up and all things considered I wouldn't mind a second series following culchie Conan's adventures. It would be a good format for a series. As of now it's topping 'House of the Dragon' which I just couldn't get into at all. Might have to try that one again.

The third novella takes place almost immediately after the second, a matter of weeks later at most.

The first is set of 209, the second 211 and the third in 212. The full story overs 50 Years. The kid getting older isn’t an issue.

    Great series so far.

The only thing I noted that was a major issue was the armourer not saying about a knight who remembers his vows. Those who read the book will know what I mean.

Its set a tone, I know the prince says it, but good for the smallfolk too.

So, while I've previously sang the praises of this being a great show in it's own right - Episode 5 definitely showed some of it's predecessors DNA; with all the "glory and honor" of being a knight falling by the side, giving way to a visceral, unglamourous very on-brand GoT spectacle.

Would I liked to have seen more of what unfolded elsewhere on the battlefield? Sure, but that doesn't take away from what we did get to see between Aerion and Dunk in the trial. Our Hedge Knight might seem meek around the highborn, but he can take a pounding, and give back in spades.

The back-story was well placed and delivered too, without falling into over-sentimental or dramatic trappings.

Looking forward to seeing the fallout for all involved on the season finale.

That was a very disappointing episode.

I thought that was class - the show as a whole is fantastic, the comedy, the suspense, the acting! The action here was done tremendously, the pov's made you feel like you were there and showed the difficulty of the whole thing. The whole trial really felt like you were in it, and really brought home the utter brutality of it all and the real consequences afterwards.

Ep 05 is deadly. That's all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,674 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Thought the battle was a bit over the top. The lad should be dead 5 times over.

Although I'm also one of the few people who thought Battle of the Bastards was a bit sht.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 17,407 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

    Yes it wasnt realistic.

Dunc's injuries were ridiculously over the top.

He had a lance go though his abdomen, he was run through multiple times with a sword, maced to the head multiple times, stabbed multiple times, inc in the hand and eye ?

You couldnt see much of the other 12 contestants. I was expecting at least 7 separate jousts.

I thought it was really disappointing, all that build up and it was mostly 2 guys rolling around in the mud.

Still enjoying it. Adrenaline is a hell of a drug.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,530 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

Still very enjoyable. But I don't care how big you are, nobody is going to take that many slices and not bleed out real fast.

Also, kill that little blonde bastard Dunk, WTF?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,346 ✭✭✭thefa

Brillant. I like watching breakdowns for some of the parts I missed. This one was good.

You find out in episode 6, similar to the book the aftermath is found out after dunk recovers, and yes, he was very badly injured.

Enjoying it so far without comparing it to GOT. Looking forward to how this develops. 4 pages of his achievements in that Commander's Book as stated by Joffrey. Must have got up to some stuff.

Hadn't been watching this so only caught up over the weekend. Enjoying the show a lot. Nice to have something much more low stakes and personal (but clearly with ramifications which ripple outwards). The shorter episodes help too as there's no unnecessary padding to fill out the runtime either.

Sure, the extent of injuries people receive, given what we know about modern medicine, half the cast would be fodder for the Night King's army at this stage, but I don't think that lessens enjoyment of the show as a whole.

10/10 the last episode was, incredible

Turns out all we were missing was some good old fashioned game of thrones head chopping
