Heineken Cutting Jobs Due To Lower Demand For Beer

And they could make better beer.

The first time I went to the US as an adult, I had thought they only drank Budweiser because US ads suggest thats all they drink, and was surprised going into a bar the sometimes huge selection of different types of beers.

Similarly, Ive spent quite a bit of time in central and eastern europe, and never saw Heineken there.

The only place Ive seen people drinking it is Ireland and the UK.

Years ago Budweiser had their series of marketing adverts, starting with the frogs and then moving to the lizards. "Louis you are one sick lizard". My mother was doing market research, basically driving around the neighbourhood, knocking on doors and asking them questions like "Who do you plan to vote for in the next election" and "What is your favourite TV advert". She said to me, "you would not believe how many people say 'the heineken frogs'".

So yeah, great marketing department. Pity the beer wasn't a bit more, you know, drinkable.

I would say central and eastern Europe will bear the brunt of this. They have way more breweries than they need. Late last year they announced the closure of one of their Polish ones, but they still have three more. They have 12 breweries in Austria, which is where my red pen would be hovering if I were their accountant.

Logistically, I'm sure they could manage to continue serving Ireland if they closed Lady's Well, but I don't see it happening.

Sales faltering with geopolitical turbulence and weather. Would they ever ****off! It’s the price plain and simple.

If you saw Zywiec or Krušovice or Laško or Zlatý Bažant or Gösser or Zipfer, you saw Heineken.

In the late 90s certain Irish PR Companies had serious deals with Heineken and still do. Third level college ents committees have deal with Heineken.

But times moved on and in the modern age, such deals look shallow.

Has skunked beer finally had its day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,195 ✭✭✭techman1

So beer demand is going down and their response is to raise prices. I thought basic economic theory says that you have to reduce prices to increase demand. Imagine a restaurant with falling sales, oh the solution is to raise prices of meals to compensate for falling sales. How do Heineken get away with breaking basic principles?

Indulge an old man, what is “skunked beer” and how does it relate to Heineken ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,261 ✭✭✭✭Beechwoodspark

Anyone who reads the Wetherspoons or price of a pint thread will know my views - the day will come when the big breweries will be breaking their arses reducing prices to try boost sales - despite their puppets on here denying all economic realities.

If beer is bottled in green or clear glass, rather than brown, the light sort of turns it or 'skunks' it. It gets that slightly sour, unwashed socks type of smell and taste.

Heineken have made it a feature of their beer.

It's global sales and sure are we not told that it's only Ireland getting ripped off and raising prices ?

Are the VFI to blame for sales in Timbuktu now ?

I lived in Cologne for a year as a student, my favourite local beer was Reissdorf Kölsch. They used to bottle the 500ml bottles in brown and the 330ml in clear and there was definitely a different more unpleasant taste off the 330ml bottles, to the point I would avoid them.

The sales will only get lower and lower over time. New generation coming through are more into the gym, sports and nutrition. Us 90's/00 gang have gotten old and dont drink as much

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,419 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

the new generations are actually seriously into ketamine and cocaine, not all, but many, we ve much bigger problems than alcohol nowadays

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,191 ✭✭✭✭Captain Chaos

They are also alot more into weed. In my experience they claim beer does more damage to them and that they can't function for days after a few beers so they justify that weed is a natural product that the body comsumes and they can take that all day every day with no ill effects on them.😒

My daughter tells me hard drug use is greatly exaggerated in her peer group. Weed is occasionally used though. I don't think the young generation actually get enough credit when it comes to how they've turned their back on the most dangerous drug of all alcohol. It gives me a lot of hope for the future actually when this generation is a lot more tuned into themselves and their wellbeing than when i was growing up.

sadly this isnt the case for all, our rehab centers are over run with young adults with significant drug addictions, and other addictions, yes not all are engaging in such behaviors, but many are, disturbingly, very small numbers of kids(pre teens) have also been treated in such centers, but thankfully, some young people have turned their backs on alcohol and drug use

The irony is weed is probably more harmful to a teenager than alcohol.

It can cause them long-term or permanent mental-health issues.

Its not by choice really. Cant get drunk anymore or you'll end up on the internet forever.

hard to tell, both do a lot of damage, if i had children id rather they wouldnt engage in either, as ive have a per-dispostion to mental health issues, but thats not reality, many will

Yeah she's in her mid 20's and only smokes once or twice a month upon an evening. Not doubting daily widespread use is good by any stretch btw just as daily drinking is. Reality is her usage is no more dangerous than the person who has a couple of glasses of wine with dinner once a week.

Just glad the internet didn't really exist when i was growing up 😉

Definitely a bit silly on Heineken coming out fund blazing with a price hike 6 weeks ago and now claiming they have to close breweries due to lack of demand. Tge first person being shown the door should be the one who publicised tge downturn on weight loss drugs! It’s pretty much saying drinking beer makes you fat! Hardly a great message in these tones! Like, it does. We all know it but moderation is key.

Heineken to me tastes like pi$$. I was never particularly a lager fan but I’ve come around to it lately. I’m a big fan of Kinnegar Donegal lager and the sadly defunct Black Donkey lager. Carlseberg isn’t bad at all for a major either. I wouldn’t give you 5c for a bottle of Heineken.

Thing is, that seems to be a bit of editorialising on the beer industry by the RTÉ journalist, likewise the bit about weightloss drugs. What today's press release from Heineken actually says is "In Europe, the category declined due to a mix of cyclical factors, notably consumer price sensitivity," so it looks like they agree with you. They also say that they're doing quite well out of Ireland: "Portugal and Ireland delivered strong performances, achieving share gains and mid-single-digit total volume growth in both markets" so don't expect any interventions on price here.

I’m sure they did do well from us no matter what price we always cough up.

Id say alcohol does far more damage than gambling.

Hard drugs were very popular in 90/00's also, are the numbers for people in their 20's higher now compare to 90/00's?

Someone in Heineken HQ needs to revisit their LC Economics and study demand curves again.
The notion that prices can continue to rise without customers seeking substitution?
Is naive and more than a little arrogant on the part of Heineken and other brewers.

A night out at the pub is an expense that has become almost unjustifiable in the face of other rising costs.
The notion of the Irish Pub as the centre of any sort of community or as a social life hub?
Was already declining but has had it's coffin hammered shut by the growth in all input costs.
