Another dull damp day yet again. At least from tomorrow our weather will start to get more mobile again and we wont continue to be stuck in this endless rut.

First time in a while where it hasn't been raining on my morning dog walk. Even a few gaps in the cloud and im seeing blue skies

Awful morning up the road in D13, heavy drizzle and fog with very low visibility

The weather is Kerry has been decent all this time, compared to what I'm seeing and hearing from the East coast. Walking every day, hiking at the weekend, a few swims every week. Not wall to wall sunshine, but we really escaped the worst of the rain since Christmas. Cork seems to have got it much worse than Kerry.

However I was just thinking yesterday when I was out walking that this entire Winter in the part of Kerry I live in we have had just ONE morning where there was ice on the car! That's how mild this Winter has been. One frosty morning.

I miss the Winters of my childhood, and even my young adulthood……fresh cold weather from October onwards. Frosty mornings everyday , a lovely feeling and smell in the air, cold bright Winter sunshine, crisp leaves underfoot not wet mush, big roaring log fires, walking on icy ponds in our wellies listening to the cracks, neighbours checking on neighbours, a real "feel" of Christmas in the air in November and not because of Lidl/Aldi ads on TV promoting over eating.

Ah I know we all look back through rose tinted glasses and we genuinely knew cold in those days, but to me it was better. The seasons have changed beyond all recognition.

Got lucky on my cycle in this morning with no rain whatsoever, but surprise surprise it's now belting down in Dublin, god forbid we might get a day off from this incessant rain. Very hard to be positive after over 6 weeks of constant rain.

Can we just put this winter into the incinerator and be done with it?

Sunny this morning after some showers, North Wicklow. Really is nice ☀️

hammering rain for past 30 minutes here at Dunshaughlin despite the rain radar on Met Eireann and Netweather looking clear with rain to our north and to our south. Water gushing down both sides of the road and driveway waterlogged again. I'm so fed up of this.

We could also try and generate a 3D modelled country the size of Africa and stick it in the Atlantic between Ireland and Canada to shut that ocean down forever! We would still have some sea to our west and some sea to the east of Canada but it would make a very interesting change to our climate!

some sunshine here atm . At least we are now starting to move out of the rut we have been in for weeks. Might not always be great but at least something more normal.

Not a bad day here in SCD. Sun was out briefly earlier. Light rain showers now.

Just saw forecast for Dublin is to start raining again at midnight tonight and not stop until Friday at 10am, it’s all becoming a bit much tbh.

I mean it's pissing rain in Dublin right now too

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,336 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

I got out to enjoy todays dry spell, it lasted about 45 minutes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 579 ✭✭✭Thunder87

Yeah the "start raining" part seems fairly inaccurate in that forecast given the phenomenon of "stop raining" hasn't really happened this past while

Pouring down here near the airport

Got a run in at lunch and only got mildly soaked and it was brighter than usual so at least there was that. I go to a class in town on Thursday nights and every bloody time it seems to be lashing, it's really unusual this for Dublin, it's just non stop.

A cold and snowy Sligo this week back in 1978

As another kerry resident [Tralee] I agree with most of this. It really hasn't been bad at all here, much worse south and east of us, indeed including Cork.

But while winters here are always boringly mild these days, I don't think this winter has been especially mild. Not like the clammy double digit temps of recent years. Temps from mid December up to recently have been under 10C and Christmas was fairly seasonal with quite low temps, much better than recent years. Not quite the more seasonal cold of bygone years that you describe, but not too bad either.

I went out yesterday when it was meant to be dry, radar looked ok, got soaked, chafed raw and now will be wearing little plasters and body glide for weeks.

Had to wind back and put on subtitles to.understand him ( did anyone ever tell him he needs to enunciate when grinning ?) but Mark Bowe was smiling away when he mentioned "rain returning for us all on Saturday and Sunday ".

    A bit of a Jonah 🙄

This is just brilliant altogether. The rain has been pumping into the East from the Irish Sea for weeks , and guess what, it's going to start pumping into the West from the Atlantic now.

Will March provide us with a prolonged dry spell ? 🤔

I'm in Trim, Meath. There's a fairly large area of moderate rain which is completely stationary for the past couple of hours. @Gonzo is also under the same area of rain.

    Spot the difference
