Wasn't aware of this Zeugnis. Are we restricted to a senior squad of 36. And is this the same for all provinces.

realhorrorshow you are a fountain of information which is really appreciated on this thread. And if I remember you also posted that Bundee has a huge public value to Connacht in that the younger generation love him and he is very good with and to them.

And as you say we have unknown options at centre. Considering how West has done with his opportunity there is no reason to say that others can't break through.

All said other than the Leinster game in Dublin we really have been in touch in every game.

And Lancaster has to be applauded for this. I wonder can he see past the end of the season and continue to develop new players. So far he has done admirably and maybe he should continue. As a Connacht supporter I'm ok if he does just that. He already has developed some amazing talent in his short tenure so I'm happy to give him a lot of scope

It's just a rumour that has been circulating and 36 is the number I've heard in relation to Connacht. Think other provinces will shrink their squads as well but then they have bigger budgets.

Personally, I'm in favour of filling holes in the squad with game time for Academy players, something which Connacht did not do to a significant extent until Lancaster's arrival.

I think we can get to 36 but we will need viable first team options in the academy, especially at prop. Something like:

    • LH: Dooley, Duggan, van Wyk; Bohan
    • HK: Heffernan, Tierney-Martin, Victory; Yarr
    • TH: Aungier, Barrett, Bealham, Illo; Murtagh
    • LK: D Murray, N Murray, J Murphy, O'Connor; Anic, D Walsh
    • BR: Boyle, Connors, Hurley-Langton, Jansen, O'Brien, Prendergast; Flynn, McCarthy, O'Brien, O'Connell, Power
    • SH: Blade, Murphy, Reilly; Farthing, Lindner
    • OH: Frawley, Ioane; O'Shaughnessy
    • CT: Aki, Devine, Forde, Gavin, West; O'Sullivan, S Walsh
    • B3: Bolton, Gilbert, Hansen, Jennings, Naughton, Treacy; Henson, Ryan

I don't particularly love it, particularly the front and second rows, but it's probably just about manageable with some clever academy pickups.

    I don’t love it either!!!!

There has to be a starting lock coming in. I kind of understand if we can’t do a starting hooker but we need a marquee signing at lock.

Hooker all depends on if Heffernan can do another year. If he can’t we fooked.

You are putting Anic in at 18 as a first year academy player? I think he's strong enough but I think he needs a year in the academy before he sees first team action.

I'll tell his old man you want him in the senior squad straight away. I'm sure he'll love that you rate him so highly already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,890 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

No I definitely don't think that he will play first team rugby, just that he will be in the academy. He'll be busy between AIL, Ireland u20s, and maybe a few Eagles games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 752 ✭✭✭CuriousCucumber

I wonder if Shane Delahunt misses it at all?

If Heffernan is the answer, we're in very bad shape. Our current batch of hookers are poor, and inconsistent.

Imagine getting a Tom McCartney now. That would be amazing

Fingers crossed for a starting 2 and 5.

I still kind of expect to hear Connacht sign John McKee, and think if you get him you'll be getting a really good player. I can't see Leinster going into next season with all of Dan Sheehan, Ronan Kelleher, Gus McCarthy, McKee & Stephen Smyth on their books (along with the Irish U20s hooker Lee Fitzpatrick).

It would be odd to cut Lasisi at prop without him having had a chance. I'd also be disappointed to see Oisin Dowling leave, a player who has been good for us but long-term injured this season.

I would give Bohan a senior contract now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,890 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

It's not necessarily what I want or think will happen, was just trying to workshop a 36 man squad. You could squeeze in another forward if Aki leaves.

I also like Dowling, and being let go would be tough on Lasisi but that's pro sport. Hopefully for him he had a chance to impress in pre-season before he got injured.

I imagine our hand will be forced with Bohan, in the form of an offer from one of the other provinces. I'm sure Ulster or Munster are very keen.

Not a snowballs chance in hell we are going to 36 imo. 39 perhaps but I'd expect 40.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,821 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

I think back to McCartney walking through a Leinster defense until Sexton followed him back and held him up. Sexton was special.

I don't believe that we will be going to 36 man squad this year. I think it will happen over time once the academy running effectively. We also have a number of players near retirement pre or post WC so may hold additional numbers until then.

Below is a breakdown of what could potentially happen going into next season

    Loosehead Prop - 4 (1) 1 NIQ

Signed - Van Wyck, Duggan, Bohan (Academy)

    TBD - Dooley, Buckley, Lasisi

    Academy - NA

    Rumours - NA

Buckley will possibly retire. Bohan to be given a senior contract. Dooley to move on and Lasisi to be offered another year. LH from Leinster probably brought into the academy

2026/2027 Depth Chart - Van Wyck, Bohan, Duggan, Lasisi - AN Other (A)

    Hooker - 4 (1)

    Signed - Heffernan, Victory

TBD - Tierney Martin, De Buitlear

    Academy - Yarr

    Rumours - John McKee

John McKee signed and one of DTM or EDB kept on.

2026/2027 - McKee, Heffernan, DTM, Victory, Yarr (A)

    Tighthead Prop - 4 (1)

    Signed - Illo, Barrett

    TBD - Bealham, Aungier

    Academy - NA

Rumours - Niall Smyth from Leinster, Aungier to Ulster/Munster

Bealham new 1 year contract. Aungier to move on. Academy prop brought in. Sign Smyth from Leinster

2026/2027 - Bealham, Illo, Barrett, Smyth, AN Other (A)

    Lock - 5 (2)

    Signed - Murray, Murray, Murphy

    TBD - Dowling, O'Connor

    Academy - Walsh

Rumours - Cormac Daly + others

Sign 2 locks or keep 1 of Dowling/O'Connor, Leo Anic brought in to academy.

2026/2027 - Murray, Murray, Murphy, Dowling, AN Other, Anic (A), Walsh (A)

    Back Row - 6 (6) 1 NIQ

Signed - Prendergast, Boyle, Jansen, O'Brien, Connors

    TBD - SHL, McCormack

    Academy - O'Brien, Power, O'Connell, McCarthy, Flynn,

    Rumours - Deegan

Sign SHL. McCormack moves on. 1 into academy (Keane maybe).

    2026/2027 - Prendergast, Boyle, Jansen, O'Brien, Connors, SHL, O'Brien(A), Power(A), O'Connell(A), McCarthy(A), Flynn(A), AN Other (A)

    Scrum Half - 2 (3)

    Signed - NA

    TBD - Blade, Murphy, Reilly

    Academy - Farthing, Lindner

    Rumours - Murphy to Munster - Milo-Harris

Blade signs on. Murphy or Milo-Harris. Reilly moves on. 1 into academy.

    2026/2027 - Blade, Murphy, Farthing (A), Lindner(A), AN Other (A)

    Out Half - 3 (2) 1 NIQ

    Signed - Naughton, Frawley

    TBD - Ioane, Carty

    Academy - O'Shaughnessy

    Rumours - Ioane moving on.

Carty or Ioane. 1 into academy.

    2026/2027 - Frawley, Naughton, Ioane, O'Shaughnessy(A), AN Other (A)

    Centre - 5 (2)

    Signed - Forde, Gavin, Devine

TBD - Ralston, Aki, West, Hawkshaw

    Academy - Walsh, O'Sullivan

    Rumours - NA

West extended. Bundee gets a year. Ralston and Hawkshaw move on.

    2026/2027 - Aki, Forde, Gavin, Devine, West, Walsh (A), O'Sullivan (A)

    Back 3 - 6 (3)

    Signed - Bolton, Hansen, Gilbert

    TBD - Treacy, Jennings, Mullins

    Academy - Ryan

    Rumours - Larmour

Larmour signs. Treacy and Jennings extended. Mullins move on. Henson plus AN Other into academy.

2026/2027 - Bolton, Hansen, Gilbert, Treacy, Jennings, Ryan (A), Henson (A) AN Other (A)

Just guessing in terms of new signings but replace them with other potential targets but in terms of numbers I think it will be close to this.

Yeah this is about right imo, although there's no chance we go into next season with only two senior scrumhalves. Cormac Foley would be grand as third choice.

Great, informative post above! There was also talk of Bobby Sheehan getting a contract. Raw, but big and powerful. Just wondering if anyone has any updates on Liam McNamee? He is the sort of size we need at lock. I would hope he could get an academy spot.

Jamie Bohan will likely follow his brother west fyi

    Niall Smyth isn't moving west.

I would be shocked if Niall Smyth moves given the expectation around him at Leinster.

Shane Delahunt was so underrated - he loved a bit of niggle too, which I'm a huge fan of.

Was a fine player. Remember the try he scored against Leinster, I think in Muldoon’s last home game?

He retired way too early. Much respect to him for knowing his own mind though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 752 ✭✭✭CuriousCucumber

He was a little frustrating too.

Remember in Thomand, when he booted the ball clear, and ended up winning a 50:22

He was so hyped, that he made a mess of the subsequent throw

Very young and callow Connacht Eagles side to face Leinster A at the Dexcom tomorrow (kick off 2pm, free admission).

    15. Cian Brady
    14. Rourke O'Sullivan
    13. Thomas Cotton
    12. John Devine
    11. Paul Sharkey
    10. Calum Elwood
    9. Tomas Farthing
    1. Adam Cooper
    2. Eoin de Buitléar (C)
    3. Fiachna Barrett
    4. Rory Gavin
    5. Oisin McNicholas
    6. Bobby Power
    7. Max Flynn
    8. Eanna McCarthy

    Replacements

    Matthew Victory
    Jaynal Almanzar
    Luke Murtagh
    Dara Walsh
    Mikey Yarr
    Charlie Keane
    Albert Lindner
    Billy Cross
    Ferdia O'Braonain

Couple of notable names in there - Cian Brady was very hyped at underage levels, Rourke O'Sullivan is the South African lad who has recently been added to the Academy. Eric Elwood's son at 10. Strong backrow.

The third Walsh brother on the bench.

huge shame the oldest walsh brother doesnt want to play pro rugby.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,597 ✭✭✭FtD v2

It's nuts; I remember seeing him for Ireland U18s a few years back and he was a physical freak.

That Irish U18s side had Paidi Farrell, Gene O'Leary Kareem, Ciaran Mangan, Mikey Yarr, Emmet Calvey, Michael Foy, Mahon Ronan, Aaron O'Brien, Luke Murphy, Alex Mullan, Oisin Minogue, Dylan Hicks, Charlie Molony & Todd Lawlor - all guys who went on to win Academy contracts - and I remember coming away from the game thinking Bryan Walsh was the best athlete on view.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,890 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Playing pro rugby at that height must be tough and I can see why it wouldn't be for everyone. The calorie intake alone would be insane, never mind the strain on joints etc.

Shame from a Connacht point of view, we could have had our answer to the Barrett brothers (still might to be fair).

Struggling in the league, players being hoovered up by other provinces, no players in the Irish squad......looks like the bad old days are back :(
