Here we are again, another 12 months of showing off our beaten games.

As a recap for myself, I did a lot of PC gaming in 2025 - more than I ever have. Might not show from the list below, but my Steam Replay is pretty stacked in comparison to previous years. I can thank my fiancée for that - she's a big PC gamer herself and definitely retriggered my interest. Still have a backlog of over 1,000 games but sure, that's Steam for ya 😝

I beat 39 games in 2025, which is more than I did for 2024, and a ton more than 2023 (was going through something rough that year). A lot of retro games played as well (went to Blackpool and brought my Retroid Pocket with me, so I was pretty occupied during my travels and at night)

Maybe one day I'll beat my 2021 record of 59. Maybe I need another compilation of retro fighting games to blast through again (sorry @Retr0gamer)

    Anyway, HAPPY NEW YEAR.

    My final list for 2025;

On honeymoon so I'll do my recap later. This year I'm going to focus on more shorter games and I say that after just starting a few play time whoppers.

    GAME #1
    CALL OF DUTY 2, PC

I originally tried to play the OG Call of Duty from 2003 but without any mods or config file tweaking, I couldn't get the thing to run properly on my PC, due to its age. So I settled with what I'd probably regard as a very, very good followup.

A good ol' classic WW2 shooter. I really did miss comparing Call of Duty to Medal of Honor back in the day, before Battlefield brute-forced its way in. The petty fight on who could deliver the best WW2 FPS series. But I only ever had experiences with the latter growing up in my teens. Didn't get into COD until the 4th one. So it's safe to say I let this one pass me by — always wanted to go back and try it though so I decided to play it this week.

There's nothing to it, really, as it was for these old WW2 instalments. No elaborate cutscenes, no real plot to think about (save for the obvious). Just a bunch of WW2 set-pieces to play on, and a damn tight FPS to boot. Fun time all-round. I do miss the older pre-Black Ops games. Not gonna lie.

I remember cod 2 looking amazing but it did suffer some consolisation with much smaller play areas than the first game and it's expansion.

    GAME #2
    GEARS OF WAR: RELOADED, PS5

Another comfort game for me. Got it dirt cheap but as someone who already had the UE on Xbox, I didn't notice much of a difference with Reloaded (save for the obvious PS5 inclusions - haptics etc.)

Naturally I jumped on Insane Difficulty from the get-go. Final boss was a pain in the arse though.

Interested to know if they'll give Gears 2 & 3 the "Reloaded" treatment. Mind you, I've been hoping for remasters of those two games for 10 years.

Just putting a summary of the games from last year:

    Best

Ninja Gaiden Ragebound (PC) - The Game Kitchen managed to make one of the all time great action games here while remaining faithful to the original.

    Excellent

Wizardry Variants Daphne (Mobile) - wonderful dungeon crawler that despite the mobile trappings makes an excellent single player game full of atmosphere and excellent writing.

Track & Field (Arcade) - the original arcade button masher that is still a huge amount of fun.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black (PC) - it's still a rushed game that's a disappointing follow up to the god tier original but the combat is just so visceral and fun

Super Mario Wonder (Switch) - Nintendo managed to make 2D platformers fresh again with a game that constantly surprises.

Dragon Quest 3 HD 2D (PC) - Playing this made me understand why it's so revered by the japanese. It's pretty much the template for modern JRPGs and a charming adventure itself.

Thronglets (Android) - Fun little surreal game created by the oxenfree developer to tie in with Black Mirror. Worth playing to see how mental it gets. And it's free with your Netflix subscription.

Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse (NES) - probably the best traditional Castlevania game? Excellent level design, loads of creative ideas, multiple paths and playable characters. A contender for best NES games of all time.

Gimmick! (NES) - Sunsoft set out to push the NES to its limits with this game. It might be one of the most technically advanced games on the system but it backs that up with excellent gameplay, clever mechanics and an all timer soundtrack.

Faselei! (NeoGeo Pocket Colour) - This was almost my game of the year. This game was almost not released in English but copies managed to slip out. It's a wonderful and brief little tactical RPG with fun and original mechanic where you have to program in your mech's moves and attacks before each round. I could t put this down and it's a shame it's so obscure as it deserves a bigger audience.

Parappa the Rapper (PSP) - I had issues with the input latency and how it's off time with the on screen icons but honestly, this is a PlayStation icon and a lot of fun.

Sin and Punishment (N64) - Might be the best N64 ever made? This was another game considered for best of the year. Treasure have crafted a rail shooter that is brimming with creativity and a plot that can only come from snorting the dust of ground up Evangelion DVDs.

Xenoblade 2 (Switch) - wonderful open world RPG from Monolith software. The systems might be a bit too complex but it eventually makes sense. The plot is a bit too anime compared to the excellent writing in the first game.

Brandish: The Dark Revenant (PSP) - A fantastic remake of one of Falcom's more obscure games. An excellent action RPG dungeon crawler.

Silent Hill f (PC) - I was hoping this would be good and it didn't disappoint. A great entry into the series and the beat silent hill since the second game.

Kid Icarus Uprising (3DS) - Another excellent rail shooter. It's a massive adventure with some surprisingly good character banter and humour. Well worth playing through the hand cramps to experience.

Fatal Fury (Arcade) - Surprised how much I enjoyed this game considering it's seen as a footnote in fighting game history due to being over shadowed by Street Fighter 2. Fatal Fury is a better single player game than SF2 that feels more like a boss rush.

    Good

Spiderman (2018) (PC) - I was sick of it before the end up the excellent movement mechanics and fun characters meant it's one of the better ubi style mobygames.

Ace Combat 6 (XBox 360) - a weaker entry in the series. Missions are a little too long and checkpoints a little to far apparent but the core ace combat gameplay is always a good time.

The Legend of the Mystical Ninja (SNES) - the first in the SNES Goemon games. Classic Konami gameplay with some really inventive levels and bosses. The overworld areas are a bit weaker but apparently this series just gets better and I can't wait to try the sequels.

Tomb Raider 2: The Golden Mask (PC) - I feel TR2 was a drop in quality from the first game. This expansion pack however is way better than the base game with some of the best TR levels ever designed. Highly recommended not to skip this expansion.

Tomb Raider 3: The Lost Artifact (PC) - another TR expansion that is much better than the base game. Again, don't miss out of this expansion if you go back to these games.

Hammerin' Hero (PSP) - Obscure PSP follow up to an obscure series about a worker with a giant mallet. Very simple action platformer but it's filled with so much charm and sight gags with some fun boss fights. Some slightly janky moments but a good fun short game.

Shinobi (3DS) - Don't overlook this 3DS entry. Combat and level design are tight. It's very nearly brilliant, some check pointing issues let it down.

Metal Wolf Chaos XD (PS4) - From Software mecha game that also doubles as a satire of Bush era American politics. It's a little bit shallow compared to most other From Software games but dialogue and destructive spectacle are hilarious.

Parodius (MSX) - a good shooter let down by the host hardware. The MSX ratchet scrolling makes the game a little hard on the eyes. A good start to the series that wouldn't become a classic until the next game on 16 bit arcade and console hardware.

Tokyo Crash Mobs (3DS) - fun and surreal take on the puzzloop formula that adds some welcome gameplay gimmicks.

Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS) - very enjoyable remake of Metroid 2. Feels quite unique for a metroidvania due to the esoteric structure of Metroid 2 but I do prefer the fan remake AM2R

Spiderman: The City that Never Sleeps DLC (PC) - well paced episodic story that is well worth playing after the main game.

    Meh

Mars after Midnight (Playdate) - I expected a lot more from a Lucas Pope game. A fun aesthetic but it's a game made for kids and not really for someone like me.

Philosoma (PS1) - An early Sony project from PlayStation. It's a pretty mediocre shooter with some interesting narrative choices.

Dragon Quest Monsters (GBC) - while the battle system is excellent and a step above pokemon, the random nature of the dungeons wore thin before the end of the game. A good starting point for better games to come.

Midnight Resistance (Arcade) - pretty much contra but competent rather than great. Some fun set pieces but a bit lacking and the arcade's rotary joystick doesn't translate to modern controllers.

Kingdom Hearts 2 (PC) - not a complete train wreck. There's some spectacle and boss fights get a lot better towards the end of the game. It's still got that floaty dated combat and the story and writing are awful.

    Meh and most disappointing

Mario Kart World (Switch 2) - after Mario Kart 8 this should have been a homerun. The track design is amazing but the whole package is ruined by forcing boring point to point road races on the player. Maddeningly this could be fixed with an update. Great soundtrack.

    1. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

    Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

Well this was a little disappointing. It a game of high highs and low lows. It's still a game I found compelling enough to stick with a finish but there's a lot of bone headed design decisions.

The metroid prime gameplay is still excellent and the game has some of the series best boss battles. It's absolutely gorgeous as well. The switch roots are sometimes visible but the art direction is exceptional with everything having a clean 70s sci fi aesthetic, like a Roger Dean album cover.

The structure of the game, 4 largely linear dungeons separated by an open field, isn't necessarily a bad thing. Games like ocarina of time and majoras mask did the same thing. Those games however didn't force the player to backtrack into cleared dungeons for progress critical items. It leads to maddening down time between missions where you are told to go explore the dungeons, visit one, go to the end then back again and get told you went to the wrong one.

There's some reviewer comments I found baffling. The characters Samus meets and her lack of dialogue aren't great, and not that well written either but their affect on the game is so minor that honestly I don't get the controversy over it. It's not great but it doesn't get in the way of the game.

    GAME #3
    APOCALYPSE, PS1

I first played this game when I was 10 years old - dad got me a pirate copy of it for my chipped PlayStation, had no idea what the game was about but I loved the gunplay.

I guess this is the first twin-stick shooter I ever played without realising it was one, as I didn't know you could use both analog sticks until I was well into my 20s. Jumped back into it during the week and it's still pretty fun.

I think the big selling point of this game was that it stars Bruce Willis, and isn't a tie-in to any other property. They used his face and his voice, and he spouts out completely cheesy, 80s action-movie one-liners throughout the game…..even if he does do it a bit too much, as after the 3rd mission it starts to become repetitive.

I had a lot of fun with this, but my main reason for jumping into it was to test out my Retroid Pocket 5, which I just bought. Ran it absolutely smooth as butter, and I'll be using this for a lot of retro stuff going forward.

Slightly off on a tangent but one thing I love about this, is that I can use a cloud server to jump between this, and my PC if I wanna continue any games on another device. As a dude who now has a 4-person family home, this is a godsend.

Fun game anyway. But was a bit awkward at times, especially with the camera being on autopilot throughout. Personally, this would've worked so much better if the camera remained static and they worked around it, or maybe if it was a 16-bit game, but I guess I'm asking for something that this game isn't.

Another thing I found out was that they (Neversoft) used this game's engine for creating the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games going forward.

Not thought of apocalypse in years. Remember it being kind of decent of not amazing and bruce willis delivering his lines like the whole thing was beneath him, which it kind of was.

Didn't realize it could be played twin analogue. If so could be one of the first games to use that control scheme.

    1. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (Switch 2)
    2. Salamander (Arcade)

    Salamander

Salamander is a spin off of Konami's Gradius series. The two biggest differences are the power up system and how the stages alternate between horizontal and vertical stages. The power up bar from Gradius is gone, replaced with standard collectible power ups that give abilities that will be familiar to Gradius fans.

I managed to 1 credit clear this game as part of a boards high score challenge. The game is pretty difficult but also quite fair, much easier than most of the Gradius series. The second loop of the game however really ramps up the challenge and I've not even managed to beat the first stage of it. It still has that arcade Gradius issue of you effectively having 1 life as dying spawns you in with no power ups which means your life expectancy is measured in seconds.

Salamander is a real arcade classic. Great stages and music, it plays really well, although the performance can chug as the game often pushes way more sprites than the hardware can handle.

Salamander was released as Life Force, where it was rebalanced with the standard Gradius power up bar. Not a big fan of this version, but the NES conversion of Life Force is one of the best games on the system and adds new content.

I completed Rocket Knight Adventures on the Megadrive in the 1990s on Easy but not on Normal.

Not to belittle that achievement as that is a very tough game, but the end of normal difficulty and higher has a nice little extra section.

    GAME #4
    VALIS, MEGA DRIVE

Booted it up while I was waiting on the bus to work. Beat the game on the bus lol

This is the kind of retro game I enjoy the most, especially platformers - somewhat bitesized and still a lot of fun.

I really enjoyed this one. Tried looking for the sequel and I see that it's on TG-16/PCE. I think there was also a MD port but I think they changed it.

Probably gonna jump on that one tonight anyway......or maybe during my break if the restaurant is dead enough and I have nothing to do.

SD Valis is a super deformed version of valis 2 on mega drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,687 ✭✭✭Gamer Bhoy 89

Yeah I had a look at it, but wasn't sure the artstyle was my thing.

    …nevertheless:

    GAME #5
    VALIS II, TURBOGRAFX-CD

Didn't like this one as much. Died a lot, continued a lot. The enemies were super erratic at times - their patterns were just unpredictable. I just learned that this game actually released before Valis on Mega Drive, the latter being a 1991 remake of Valis: The Fantazm Soldier on MSX (1986)

This makes sense as I originally felt that Valis II was mechanically a step-back from Valis 1. Couldn't pick what SP. ATK i could use, and the weapon upgrades didn't feel like upgrades. They just increased damage output, whereas Valis 1 actually powered up the projectiles similarly to a lot of run & gun shooters (Contra, etc.)

Definitely a weak one, and glad to have it done. I doubt I'll ever play it again and just skip to 3 going forward. It's not like I'm following the story anyway lol.

I forgot that they localized SD Valis as "Syd of Valis" which makes absolutely no sense. Kind of a weird localisation choice!

    GAME #6
    CONTRA, NES

Never understood the hype for these games. Maybe it's me, but how do you not play this game without the Konami code, and how do you beat this game without getting down to your last continue? My reflexes are not good enough, but at least I beat it….with no more continues remaining lol

    GAME #7
BEYOND OASIS/STORY OF THOR, MEGA DRIVE

This was a repeated rental for me when I was a wee lad, but I never understood how to play it. Action adventure games were new to me at the time, as I was too used to the linear, arcade-style games of going left-to-right, level-to-level. I played it a bunch about 6 or 7 years ago but got about 3/4 of the way. Dove back into it last week and I have to say, I get it now. Really enjoyed it. I dunno why people compared it to Zelda, specifically Link to the Past. Yeah it's an top-down action adventure game, the same as Zelda, but also the same as other games, too (Alundra, maybe…. (yeah I'd love to try that game out, too, one day)), if anything, it feels more like a brawler, with an overworld (which makes sense as it was made by Ancient, the same people who developed Streets of Rage 2, and a lot of the same sound effects are here as well, like the item-pickup sound, or the sound fx for when the sword swings). Overall it's still really good, and I had a lot of fun, but there was a point near the last third of the game where I thought this game won't gimme a minute to take a breath. If anyone's played through this, I'm sure you'll know which part I'm talking about.

I started Legend of Oasis on Saturn straight after, but I was feeling a bit burnt out so I put it aside for now. Just feels more of the same if a little prettier.

    GAME #8
    ROAD RASH, MEGA DRIVE

After 30 years, FINALLY beat it!! Up until now I struggled really hard with the final Level of races. I just did a lot of grinding to get the best bike this time (A LOT, as I kept finishing below 4th place so the prize money was going up at a crawl).

I had my retroachievements attached to this so I managed to grab all of those, too :D

    image.png

Probably my favourite racing game on the system, I still have my OG copy as well.

(Also, if you play this via RetroArch, stick the CPU overclock to about 175%, doubles the frame-rate which - when I first experimented with it, felt and looked so damn weird, but what a difference)

Contra definitely lives up to the hype. It's tough but very fair. The problem is the 30 man code makes the game no fun at all. You end up losing lives as a crutch instead of learning the game and getting better. It's like credit feeding an arcade game.

On top of that the NES game difficulty is grossly exaggerated. I sat down and had it beaten on two afternoons.

    GAME #9
    ROAD RASH 2, MEGA DRIVE

Slight improvement on the UX and extra features added made this a decent follow-up.

For one, the password system got a much better change, cutting it in half. Would've loved that back in the day as the original had a really long and tedious password system.

Fans regard this one as their favourite in the series, but because I didn't grow up with it and didn't play it until I was about 18 I don't have the nostalgia for it (prefer RR1). Nonetheless it's more of the same when it's boiled down, but the changes make up for it.

    GAME #10
    ROAD RASH 3, MEGA DRIVE

I have an odd history with this one. When I was young, I used to rent this a few times and loved it, but didn't realise it was Road Rash 3, because my auntie let me pick a game to buy, and all I asked for was Road Rash, so that was the one I got, but it felt completely different and stripped down in what I remembered.

When I got a chance to re-play RR3 about 20 years ago, I was….pretty disappointed. I still like the game to this day however I can't ignore the fact that the issues still exist for me; the animations feel choppier, the music isn't as good as the previous two, and the visuals are downright ugly, opting for that horrible digitised sprite job for the character models (let's be fair, only Mortal Kombat could pull it off if you ask me). It is the most feature-filled entry at least. 7 weapons in total, more bikes to choose from, and the race tracks actually switch up when you move up a level, omitting a bit of the repetitive nature of 1 and 2.

Still, I liked it. I'll take all of those three games over the 3D iterations any day.

    1. Midnight Suns | PS5
    2. Absolum | Switch 2
    3. Ghost of Yotei | PS5

    Absolum

Had heard about this and didn't expect much. Its like streets of rage 4 with a fantasy theme. I had a blast with this the end bosses were super tough. Loved the art style.

    Ghost of Yotei

I intially wasn't grabbed with this in the first few hours similar to GOT. But I stuck with it and more I played it, I really loved it. The story and sidequests are very organic, the open world isn't overly large. It doesn't reinvent the wheel but its a good story and isn't overly long. Looks great on the PS5 Pro.

    GAME #11
    JACKIE CHAN STUNTMASTER, PS1

Released in 2000 by Radical Entertainment, who would go on to make The Simpsons Hit & Run, Scarface, & Prototype. They previously made a couple of forgettable sports games and also Beavis & Butt-Head on Mega Drive (terrible game).

This, however, was very decent. The levels were a bit repetitive but the gameplay more than made up for it for the most part. It's more button-mashy than other brawlers I've played but I still found it pretty fun.

Wanted to buy this but seeing how much it costs nowadays - insane - I'll wait til I win big on a puggy before I even think of paying 200 quid on an old game.

The brawling gameplay kind of reminds me of games like True Crime and Sleeping Dogs. Very satisfying and crunchy.

The platforming wasn't that great. Felt like there was a touch of input lag. I dunno if that was due to me playing it via an emulator or if it was also an issue on real hardware but a lot of my platforming mistakes was due to Jackie not jumping the exact moment I hit the button at the edge of the platform.

Wasn't overly annoying but it was definitely noticeable. I just adapted I guess.

    1. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (Switch 2)
    2. Salamander (Arcade)
    3. Virtual Boy Wario Land (Virtual Boy)

    Virtual Boy Wario Land

Despite only lasting a few months and having such a small library, the Virtual Boy has quite a few good games on it and this might be the best one. It feels like the lost evolutionary link from the pretty standard platformer of Wario Land and the exploration based gameplay of Wario Land 2.

The game takes the excellent gameplay of the Gameboy original but designs the levels around exploration and finding secrets. The 20 minute time limit on each stage hammers that point home. Each stage has you hunt down a key to the exit before you can leave, but each stage also has a hidden treasure for you to hunt down.

The visuals are excellent with gorgeous large sprites and some excellent 3D parallax. The boss battles in particular look stunning. The makes good use of the 3D effect with hazards and enemies coming from the background. You can also jump to the background in some areas to find secrets. The VB has a surprisingly good sound chip and the music from Hip Tanaka is excellent as usual.

VB Wario Land is an excellent platformer. It plays great. There's a lot of variety. Of I could level one complaint is the lack of content, 14 stages and 4 bosses is rather short and I finished the game in less than 3 hours.

@Retr0gamer 😅 This retro handheld I bought is fantastic, I have been playing it every day, on the bus and on my breaks in work. It's addictive 🤣

    GAME #12
    NINJA COMMANDO, NEO•GEO

If I played this game in a real arcade I would be absolutely pratted if I pumped as much money as I hit continue here. Maybe I'm getting old but my reactions absolutely suck on shooters like this.

It's GOOD, won't lie, but the fact I could only shoot upwards, it made it difficult to hit enemies that veered even slightly to the left or right. The more you shoot, the bigger the spread of your bullets - but it still felt limited.

There are special moves but they require pressing two or more action buttons at once it almost wasn't worth it.

    GAME #13
    MASTER OF DARKNESS, MASTER SYSTEM

A shameless Castlevania clone. From the uncanny gameplay tropes right down to the main antagonist (Count Dracula). The only differences being its setting (Victorian London) and the protagonist (a psychologist obsessed with ouija boards).

Since I love Castlevania I was drawn into the gameplay instantly, but I couldn't help comparing it. It was almost too familiar.

Yeah it's pretty shameless but a decent if not brilliant game. I remember it getting rave reviews at release but it think it was just due to the lack of Castlevania on the system.
