True but he does have 2 trips to the Super bowl as a passing game coordinator/OC in that time - not that any of that means he will be successful but he has been around organizations which have been competitive. In any case , beggars can't be choosers so I will give him the benefit of the doubt and hope that the Front office builds him a squad which can at least compete in the AFC west which I think is still the toughest division in the AFC with the Chargers, Chiefs and Broncos.

Well lads, I know we havent got a dog in this fight per se but are ye going to watch and who will you be cheering for??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 788 ✭✭✭Kev8360

yeah I am watching tonight. I thought New England would win in a tight match. Was leaning towards New England as Spillane and Chaisson are playing with them this year after leaving the raiders. It’s a defensive masterclass by both teams.

Last in the league, feels like we barely deserve to follow this xD. Defensive masterclasses as mentioned.

You'd wonder. A couple of good picks, decent coaching ticket...further settling into the new home and the Raiders could be where the Bronchos are in a few years.

Yep, the saying "defenses win Championships" was definitely boosted by last night's game. and now he confirmed it, the Klint Kubiak season starts now.

And the coaching staff was gutted yesterday as well. Going to be a total rebuild in the offseason. I would have preferred a more surgical approach it maybe it does need a full reset in the coaches to kick this off.

Any new head coach is always going to bring in his own team and we've also lost a few coaches to other teams in the past month. The big ones for me are defensive coordinator and OL coach!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 903 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

Given that we have admitted a total reset is needed, perhaps gutting the staff is no bad thing. I'm interested to see who the OL Coach will be and also will Kubiak allow the OC to call his own plays?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 350 ✭✭ipitydafool

I would be shocked if Kubiak doesn't call the plays next year given he coming over from Seahawks where McDonald was first HC to win a SB calling defensive plays but also that there isn't any of the younger offensive minded Head coaches not calling the offense or even the established ones like Reid, Payton, McVay and Shanahan, they all call the plays.

I assume whatever OL coach he brings in will be well versed in outside zone scheme which why I found some articles linking Jeff Stoutland to the Raiders quite funny, reports are he left the Eagles because he refused to coach this scheme and move away from his bread and butter of Gap/Power and Inside Zone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 788 ✭✭✭Kev8360

yeah I would agree with that he will call his own plays - although I don't know if he will stay with the outside zone scheme - it worked with the RB duo they had in Seattle - Ashton Jeanty is more of a between the tackles runner when he wasn't getting tackled on the handoff so not surprising there might be rumours of leaning that way for a run scheme

Coaching Staff taking shape. OC: Andrew Janocko, DC: Rob Leonard, ST: Joe DiCamillas. Kubiak, Janocko and Leonard all under 40. Quite the change from our previous hires.

What happens if you have another bad year. Do you fire Kubiak?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 903 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

I suppose we can always rehire Pete Carroll, I dont think he's being hired by anyone else.

That's not an answer to the question I asked. Does Kubiak get one year to turn things around?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 903 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

Well then, in answer to your question, I believe he will get more than one year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 42,997 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I agree with you, I think he will.

When you look at it though from afar, a Superbowl winning coach with 11 winning seasons in his last twelve years before the Raiders takes over a **** show and gets one year and a first timer getting more than one with a similar record would sound ridiculous.

But let's talk about your superstar. It appears Maxx Crosby is going. They are not talking about him leaving anymore they are onto where he is going to end up.

Not sure if Raiders fans will get much, if any, say on whether Kubiak gets more than one year!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 903 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

Yes, quite unsurprisingly, I figured you had the treatment of Pete Carroll in your head when you pushed about Kubiak's hire. Kubiak hasnt even had time to figure out where the toilet is and you already want to compare how Carroll was treated with how you possibly envisage Kubiak will be treated. Anyways Carroll is gone, us Raiders fans have made peace with that fact. And as my esteemed colleague InsideEdge has commented, we have no say in the matter!!

    What about Crosby leaving?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 196 ✭✭InsideEdge

What about it? Again, we have no say in what happens to Crosby. Why are you asking such ridiculous questions?

Crosby hasnt left and there is only speculation at the moment. There's been no confirmation from either side.

You've no say in anything, why even be a fan of the club if you have that attitude.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 196 ✭✭InsideEdge

That's just weird. And you're not even a fan of the club!

Davis/Brady appeared to believe that the Raiders had a potential winning roster (i.e., winning season, wildcard contender) coming into the 2025 season. Completely wrong belief in retrospect - but an SB winning coach made sense when you approach the season with that belief.

Now they seem to accept that they are in rebuilding mode over ~3 seasons. Carroll as HC no longer makes sense for a rebuild imo.

Kubiak will almost certainly get at least 2 years no matter how bad things are in Year 1. Something like 4-13 followed by 7-10 would probably get him into a hotseat 3rd year. That doesn't imply that anyone thinks Kubiak is better than Carroll, it merely reflects the difference between appointing an experienced win-now coach and a rebuild coach.

It would make sense for them to trade Crosby if they accept that the next two seasons won't be winning seasons (albeit turnarounds can happen quick). If they have a plan to be in a Superbowl window from say 2028-2031 then Crosby is unlikely to be part of it due to his age, so better to get the picks now.

I'm not a Raiders fan, so don't know how much strategic planning happens in LV.

So my take on Crosby leaving is that this was inevitable- I was honestly surprised that he signed the new contract last year.

we are a franchise in denial if we thought last year we would be competitive in the AFC west never mind making the playoffs. That is on Mark Davis and his advisors.

I am done with discussing Pete Carroll - I have said my piece on him , he was fired and I am moving on with interest(but not confidence) to see what lessons we have learned from last year and are we just going to repeat them or actually make a fresh start with better decisions in the front office.

I believe Klint Kubiak will get 2 years with a new QB and hopefully a couple of 1st rounders from whatever trade we pull off for Maxx - similar to what we got for Khalil Mack ( or at minimum a 1st and a 2nd).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 788 ✭✭✭Kev8360

while I am sad to see Maxx leave for the ravens, 2 1st rounders is a good trade and gives us plenty of capital to invest in the team. Wish him The best of luck and hope we don’t mess up the rebuild opportunity this gives us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 903 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

Agreed Kev. We did okay out of the deal. 2 First Rounders will be a great opportunity to improve the squad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 903 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

So we certainly have not been shy about splashing the cash so far in Free Agency. Getting Lindebraum was a great boost to bolstering the Offensive Line but more depth is needed there. The additions at Defense will help and I like that they retained Eric Stokes at CB.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 788 ✭✭✭Kev8360

and now Ravens pull out of Maxx Crosby deal … strange one that - I still think he will move on but I don’t see us getting the same deal again - shame.

To be fair, the deal was predicated on Crosby passing a medical but the Ravens knew he had treatment in December for his injury (The same as Hendrickson from the Bengals, wonder will they approach him and risk him failing a medical too). Apparently our Cap Space is still okay for the Free Agency signings so far, but it will impact how the Raiders approach the next phase of Free Agency. 30 million against the Cap is not a light hit.
