Having not reduced it at Christmas, Dunnes have Johns Lane 12 for 50 - picked up 2 today, along with Writers Tears tequila cask finish marked as “delisted last one” for 50 (possibly store specific for that one,not sure)

Thank you, thank you, I'm here all week. But seriously folks…

You can get a 4x500mL pack of Budvar (not German… but proper Pilsner) for €9.20 in Dunnes. Hard to beat that - this side of the border, anyway.

Molloys do a 4x500mL pack of Warsteiner for €9.99, it's only 4.8%, the Budvar is 5% and imho also tastes nicer.

I live in hope for widespread and more affordable availability of Spaten…

Probably more likely to be supermarkets near the border in Czechia.

Fond memories of picking up cans of Pilsner Urquell in little shops in Prague for feck all!

Also when I spent a summer working in Munich, 1989. First time I went into a German offy, it was all in bottles and you had to pay a deposit for the bottles and the crate. I picked up something that looked likely and die Verkäuferin said :

    "DAS IST ALKOHOLFREI"

    Me: Whuh?

    "DAS IST ALKOHOLFREI"

Ah. Well she had me figured out, anyway.

Put it back and got a crate of Spatens. Lovely stuff.

In 1995 spent a couple of weeks visiting a friend who was working on the (many) building sites in Leipzig. The former and still little-changed East was quite a contrast to the West. The local beer was Ur-Krostitzer, delish and cheap as chips. I'm pretty sure I won't see that in an Irish off-licence in my lifetime 😀

A college friend of my partner lives in the outer outskirts of Leipzig (ten minutes bus from the last stop on a S Bahn line) so I've been there a bit. Can't remember the name of the beer by the crate we buy in Penny, but its decent and ridiculously cheap on returning a full crate.

Got this when I was picking up the bargain Black Bush in Carry Out.

Very nice taste for a (Polish) Macro. It's from the Carlsberg brewery there now but apparently Diageo haven't managed to take over that market yet which could explain the quality.

    MUP for 4*500ml until March.

If German Pils is your thing, you can get a 4 packs of Veltins and Bitburger in supervalu for €9 (molloys actually have the bitburger for €8 -https://molloys.ie/products/bitburger-500ml-can-4-pack). Lots of people selling the 660ml bottle of Warsteinter for €3 or less.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,310 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Tesco have the Veltins at €7.57 (MUP) at the moment.

I'd agree, Veltins one of the poorest of the big German brands we get here.

Seems o briens in-store offers are the best for what I'm looking for. spaten, erdinger, frankiszkaner, paulaner etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,310 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Of you want those then Aldi and Lidl are very competitive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,310 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Agreed. I wouldn't pay the usual price for it but it's well worth the MUP cost. Hopefully whoever designed the can got a bonus.

Not sure if it's an error, but 500ml bottles of Galway Bay Brewery Full Sail are scanning for 2.25 in Marks and Spencer Liffey Valley. I think it's a euro cheaper than the price on the shelf.

They actually stock a nice range of beer there now.

Some of the M&S own brand stuff has re-turn logos but isn't registered. Rather annoying. Stuff I reported to re-turn before got fixed, not sure if the most recent stuff has.

@L1011 maybe wrong thread for the M&S unregistered items?

In Aldi tomorrow (5th Mar) they have O'Brother Brewing x Velo coffee amber ale.

    500ml can for €2.49. I can't read the abv, looks like 5.0 or 5.6

Velo is a coffee roaster in Cork

Aldi have Spaten Munchen 500ml bottles for €2.49

Dunnes have Grafters Brown ale down to €2.00. Small reduction but it might suggest it's not selling great, because they normally don't reduce their Grafters range, they're already very competitively priced. If you've not tried it maybe pick up a few bottles just in case they discontinue it.

Some good bargains on Whiplash. 6packs of IPA for 20 euro. Normally 34 euro or so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭Lester_Burnham

Eagle Rare 10 year old is 39.99 in O'Brien's. Phenomenal whiskey for that price.

Location would be useful! Is that on their site on in a shop?

    https://www.whiplashbeer.com/collections/slabs

Have 20% off some bundles but don't see 6 cans for 20.
