a lot of ingredients in McNamara’s are from there own crops might leave it cheaper all the land is around them

That looks like CODD to me…..bought it in here a few years ago in bunch of lambs…..didn’t remark it in mart as they were sold in a pen……and weren’t lame on way out home.

As people have said you need to separate that sheep and keep a tight eye on rest of flock for a few weeks.

I eventually got it out of my lambs by following the measures people have mentioned already above.

Was a pain in the tits though because had to keep them away from rest of flock for over a month to ensure they were all clear of it.

I know it's probably been asked before but anyone have a handy feeding recommendation chart for in-lamb Ewe's say from 6 weeks out right up to lambing.

Just to see how many kg's per head per day they should be getting based on twins, triplets etc.

    Thanks

got 1.5 ton of thr above sheep 20 nut and noticed on the docket it’s dropped €15 / ton €335 now per ton

That's €75 a ton cheaper than I'm paying for the small bags.

I wouldn't be long buying a Tipsy bin with that sort of sayings - maby next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,196 ✭✭✭Dickie10

yes that’s 10 miles east of navan between slane and Ashbourne, this is about 25 miles west of there between trim and Athboy.

Fellas who do the buying in late light lambs and feeding them over the Winter will be coming under pressure what with the big drop in factory trade this week and the horrific weather we are having, which doesn’t look like improving any time soon.

Heard a meteorologist on Radio the other day saying our annual rainfall has increased by 7% year on year since 2022!😳🙆‍♂️

so lads feed nuts or ration when ab lib feeding lambs in meal creep feeder at this time of year ? Feeding ration currently, but the waste age is massive.

I feed nuts to all stock, I find they pick through the ration and leave slot of dust behind.

The difference in price is fairly minimal most of the time

Done all sheep here with footvax for the first time ever this year. Was always a bit sceptical but by god it seems to be working wonders. I gave initial shot 5 weeks ago and a booster yesterday. There wasn’t one lame bringing them in. I don’t know did they even need a booster as any info I find seems to suggest conflicting advice. Some say it’s food for life but I’ll happily do it yearly if results stay as good as now

sure beats trying to get them into the fecking foot bath anyway . Put them all through the foot bath yesterday after scanning.

nice set up. How did scanning go? I scanned last week, roughly 1.8. It’d back on other years but I’m delighted really, about 10% are carrying triplets. Used to have a lot more

Nice set up there. What size footbath is that and how many ewes does it hold?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,798 ✭✭✭✭wrangler

Cormac footbath, so much easier to get sheep into than having a footbath in the race especially when lambs are going in the first time with the ewes.

I'd agree 100% on the footvax, it really strenghtens the feet, we gve two at the start and an annual one after. the vaccine is hard on sheep, we avoid using it around mating.

Do lambs get any benefit to the ewes being done with footvax do you think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,691 ✭✭✭Tileman

thanks scanned at 1.8. So happy enough with that. Only 2 empty out if 84. So happy enough with that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,691 ✭✭✭Tileman

Thanks 8ft foot bath I think. It’s only about 10 -11 at a time. It’s definitely easier than the foot bath in the race that I have in the other block. That is painful to get them through. They fine it easier to go into the cormac as the can see all around them.
use zinc sulphate in the cormac one and the cobalt sulphate in the jfc plastic one.
Seems to keep the feet in good condition. Definitely see the improvement.

How is the ewe now @Sami23

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,922 ✭✭✭Sami23

She's much improved at last thankfully. I gave her the last of the antibiotics and sprayed her last Tuesday and then caught her again there Saturday and sprayed it. Swelling was gone well down and she's not limping too bad yesterday and today so hopefully on the mend. I've kept her near the house to keep a close eye on her and will examine her again if lameness returns.

Have her with the triplets now also so she gets extra meal to try build her back up before lambing.

Would you not buy it in half ton bags, most merchants are charging between 30/40 euros a ton extra for small bags due to extra work. Half ton bags are a simple way either collected or delivered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,922 ✭✭✭Sami23

I suppose the only thing with the half ton bags would be mice n rats as I do put the small bags into a covered container thats rodent proof.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,466 ✭✭✭Sheep breeder

Not a problem a bit of poison wouldn’t sort or a good cat, have been using them for a long time and don’t find a problem. Don’t have a problem getting them refilled and also buying cheaper per ton.

decided to cut back from lambing 125-130 in mid February to lambing 80-90 next year. Just found the last few years tough on feeding, weather and lamb mortality in January and early February on run up to lambing. February truely our worst month weather. Plan is to do 85 ish in February and 40 -60 including ewe lambs in April when I have two weeks off for Easter. Only thing Is if I drop any lower than 80 it’s not worth having a person during day for the week after I go back to work after mid term in February.no real change in lamb price from mid May to mid August the last few years so what’s point if having too many ewes lambing in hellish conditions in February? Decided afainst building slatted unit for ewes also. Cost was just too much to justify I’d go road of putting ewes on grass away for per /hd / week option ahead of that , much cheaper and not too hard got around here

    Advice Please.

Ewes due to start lambing today and of course it's lashing rain.

Should I house them wet or leave them out and bring them into individual as they lamb and then house the rest first dry day I get ?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭Joesa

If you could house a few showing signs close to lambing would that be an option

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,798 ✭✭✭✭wrangler

Just to be aware that a sudden change at their stage of pregnancy can trigger twin lamb disease.

I don't envy you having to outdoor lamb in this weather,

Yes weather is very poor at the moment and really don't like house them soaking wet as could cause pneumonia also.
