Do you think it could happen at some point? I think he'd be good on Radio 1 or RTÉ Gold.

Why would he now? He’s been at Today FM longer than he was in RTE at this stage. He’s still doing the breakfast show and has a stake in Mario Rosenstock’s shows. I couldn’t see the attraction of RTE Gold for him at this stage. If he got kicked out of Today FM in the morning I could see him just hanging up the mic and enjoying life. After years of early starts you couldn’t blame him. He also seems like a guy who has other private ventures hub the background so again I don’t think he’d be idle. RTE Gold seems like somewhere to farm out old RTE presenters still on contract and get some value out of them.

I see no reason for him to change at this stage. He has a good number where he is and retirement probably beckons. He left RTE on bad terms and I doubt he'd want to go near them again.

When the move to TodayFMwas announced, he was refused entry to the Montrose campus and complained that over 20,000 albums of his were not returned to him by RTÉ.

Yikes, no one is going back to RTE after that. 20,000 albums, jeez. Ten punts a pop. That is 200k. I am sure some of them were promo copies and what no. But 20,000 albums. WOW.

20K albums… are you sure about that?! I know he’s definitely said some stuff belonging to him was never returned but 20k seems unlikely!

It’s funny how it was such a huge deal back then for RTE “stars” to dare jump ship and how RTE treated those who dared to do it. Marty Whelan a few years previously moved to the ill fated Century Radio and when that ended disastrously, RTE really made him squirm cap in hand to get back in. He was a long time doing Daz adverts.

Nowadays it seems perfectly cool to jump to a rival and you can happily work out your notice. They’ll even have you on the flagship Late Late Show to talk all about your big move (Claire Byrne). So I’d say Iano would of course be welcomed back, times have changed. But I really doubt he’d want to go back.

Edit: I see his Wikipedia entry mentions 20k albums. Still feels a bit unlikely!

If he honestly believed RTE had wrongfully kept his property, why didn't he take legal action to get them back? I avoid Ian Dempseys show, it's muck, so for me, he probably would be okay on RTE Gold where no one would listen to it.

I can see Dermot Whelan being offered a full-time spot on RTE radio 1. He's much better off as a presenter without that self-absorbed side kick Dave Moore.

The dispute was probably the records were given to Ian Dempsey at work. RTE says they are property of the show and Ian is going to say they were given to him personally. If you are going up against RTE legally you better be sure you are going to win because RTE have bottomless pockets (that you taxpayer, Zero accountability). Maybe Ian got legal advice that the outcome might be uncertain. That would be a hard pill to swallow.

TBH in the past RTE have just folded when hit with a legal letter. They generally just pay out straight away on the ground that it is cheaper then a legal battel

You jump ship on RTE, there are going to be consequences and repercussions. Remember Gay Byrne was head hunted for Century and Even though he was retired he was afraid to take it. I dont know how everyone remembers him but he had loads of soft money from RTE and £5k for opening supermarkets, a morning radio show and the Late Late show. Uncle Gaybo got money easily and was conned out of it twice as fast. He was afraid of RTE but he wasnt always the fastest cat in the room.

Sure RTE had Uncle Gay back a few years later for the few odd jobs little series. RTE did a lot of nasty meddling with Century and over charging them for technical services and what not. Eventually Century went bankrupt and RTE swooped in to pick up the talent.

If Ian Dempsey was going ….. he could have shipped out the pearls 50 at a time and RTE would never have known. RTE must have some Analog back catalogue.

I think it would make sense where Ian has retired from Today FM and has his pension and just wants to keep the radio thing going on a part-time basis for his own enjoyment. RTE Gold would be the obvious candidate there I would imagine.

Dermot Whelan and Ian Dempsey shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence together, Ian is on totally different wavelength of DJ to Dermot.

Yes Dave is self-absorbed and I don't particulary like him but Dermot is even more self-absorbed and absolute tripe on the radio, always was from 98fm up to now, I wouldn't even put him on hospital radio.

Why do we appreciate listening to certain personalities on the radio? I suppose that's all down to personal taste. I actually prefer listening to radio Caroline over any of the others because the dj's personalities are irrelevant, it's about the music they play.

Btw, if you read back over again you'll see you're the one who's first mentioned Dermot Whelan and Ian Dempsey in the same sentence together, not me.

You're the only one that brought "Dermot and Dave" into this thread.

If you're referring to me, I had mentioned Marty Whelan (not Dermot!), who in the very early 90's controversially jumped from RTE to the ill-fated Century Radio. Purely as an example of how big a deal it was then and how much "power" the RTE chiefs had over their "stars" then.

Ian is a lovely guy but his show is tired at this stage.

I used to enjoy it but now there are just too many promotions on it and the music is bland.

    He's just phoning it in.

He is very close with the 2 puppeteers.

once he left RTE, my hope would have been that he would have eventually replaced ronan collins on radio 1, but what we got was Ian's former today fm aa roadwatch reporter.

Ian was on stage at the 3Arena just last Friday night referencing "that in a former life" his Sgt Peppers dress up with Larry, Gerry etc for the 1994 Hot Press front cover for celebrating 2FMs 15th birthday, but not once did he mention that the picture was for RTE or 2FM. Mind you last Friday's event was sponsored by Bauer / Go Loud.

Checked with a buddy DJ. He said that a Radio show would own the records. It was naive of Ian Dempsey to think that RTE would allow him to walk away with records given by visiting celebrities and promotional material from music labels. Imagine what RTEs Analog catalogue looks like?

I imagine it is all in a landfill somewhere.

A lot of regionals dumped there analog catalogues and went digital. Imagine RTE probably did the same.

I would have thought that Gay Byrne was still broadcasting on RTE when Century were in business. Gay Byrne used to constantly complain about his salary when presenting. Didn't go down well with a lot of people who were struggling financially at the time.

    Communication was the greatest fatality

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,601 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Yes, Gay Byrne didn't retire from the LLS until 1999, 8+ years after Century hit the wall. He made no secret of the fact that Century did try to head hunt him and he was tempted but ultimately stayed put.

RTE do still have some sort of archive. You often hear Will Leahy responding to requests on his RTE Gold show to say that it's not in their system but he'll get one of the Dublin-based lads to dig through the archives for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,457 ✭✭✭GSF

yes the definitely still have a record library but mostly are uploading anything not in the system rather than playing the vinyl

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,324 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

RTE have been recording over their own stuff going back years. They brought out a DVD a few years ago called "The best bits from back Den", supposedly the best bits from The Den. In reality it should have been called "All we could find of The Den in the archive".

Y'know how almost everyone on the rise in that area had to cross path with Dave Fanning Show. I imagine Dave Fanning show had some unique pressings. I also imagine when there is a mass dump, that some cute hoor called a guy in the know to help him go through the stuff before it was dumped. Regionals wouldnt have the budget to archive a warehouse like RTE.

Gay Byrne was never badly paid, He was however conned left right and centre by every every Shylock including Darragh Murphys (and also "fizzy orange" from Love/Hate) Grandfather. He should have been grateful for a job because he would never have made it CO grade 3 in the P&T. I never got why housewives fawned over him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,218 ✭✭✭SupaCat95

That is a slow old monotonous job and then back it up and maintain ………There must be years work there. Most of that will NEVER be accessed or referenced. For all the good in storage like artists live sessions, 99% must be pure drivel or bands that went nowhere.

Yeah but magnetic tape is both expensive and degrades and they lost a few all Ireland finals. Now you can buy 200TB for a few grand for storage.
