I remember driving home one night and the car felt weird got home to a glowing red disc.(I really should have taking a pic) But any how I ordered a new calliper the next day. Disc was fine even though it was glowing red for a short while.

Yeah I've often had a stuck calliper years ago myself with the crap I drove haha. We all been there we just dont ignore it.

I Reckon he'd have stopped the car better by opening the door and throwing a foot on the ground while driving along.

I think, it's the iphonification of technology. Machines cease to be comprehensible items and then become capricious magic. People don't understand that they can do things which can affect it.

Did once have a brake lock on on the motorway and it was a startling thing. Also drove for several months like that where every forceful use of the brake caused the caliper to lock. And everytime had to pull in and stop and beat the caliper free with something heavy.

But it was always obvious something was wrong when it locked on - even half-locked the car vibrated notably and the heat from the discs was striking. And the smell of hot brake.

I remember driving to the NCT with a seized brake caliper and spraying water from my bottle all over it trying to cool it down before the test. Still passed😂

Flying to Detroit next week for the Detroit Auto Show….. to see a tank.

God knows why they are debuting a tank at an auto show, it is unlikely to show up at my local showroom for purchase, but I guess I’ll see what the new Cadillacs are like while I’m there.

the new Fiat Panda looks like a good package and well priced car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 551 ✭✭✭Anois_

The Grande? I just had a look and it says cruise the city. It was better when they made city cars small.

It is very well priced though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,480 ✭✭✭✭road_high

yes the Grande Panda- seems to be a naming convention with Fiat when they bring a new model and keep the old one on run out. It’s a good value car

Battery needed for 162 Diesel Tiguan in North Dublin. Factory battery lasted 10 years varta

Voltage logger shown in picture shows dropping to 9.2 volts during cranking.

Not looking to spend a fortune, car has stop start which I disabled about 9 years ago. Lots of very short runs with one long run once a week.

    So many options out there.

what's the deal with all the cars seemingly left abandoned at the ballymun NCT centre? spotted a couple with flat tyres, so a strong hint they're half abandoned there. the ones parked along here, i.e. on the right just as you enter the centre.

Probably dumped by the travellers who live there

the fact that they seem to be inside the NCT compound had me wondering about that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,502 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Why would they dump on their own patch? They won't be taken away, but move into a government-owned area and they will be lifted for free.

actually, bonus prize for anyone who can find their own car at the NCT centre in any of the street view captures.

it only has been in three or four times.

Speaking of finding cars, it's getting increasingly hard to find something nice in the used market that doesn't have a lot of mileage upfront or silly prices - yea, I know… in other news, water is wet! :D

As is a regular pastime, I frequent the usual sites looking to see what I might change my A7 for this/next year but options are thin. Sure, there's plenty of newer A7s but I like to at least get a newer interior when I change (but conscious of the increasing levels of "enshytification" in even previously premium brands).

Regular readers will know I've always promised myself an A8 partly because it's probably the only way to keep most of the toys my A7 and previous A6s had, but even those are getting harder to find (thank you Brexit!).

An added complication of my advancing years though is that my back isn't in it anymore to be getting in and out of low-slung cars and in a world of SUVs it's increasingly a pain to be in a sporty saloon as well (eg: when beside one at a junction turning the other way, or just in general traffic nowadays).

I've spent some time with a 2016 1.7 Tuscon while my A7 was getting looked at and have to admit - it's not a bad place to be - auto, cream leather, good visibility, and surprisingly responsive for the size/engine….. have browsed the bigger Sante Fe, but could I give up the Quattro, 3.0 TDI and Audi layout?? (eg: couldn't adjust to the Tuscon's implementation of cruise control).

There's loads of other 2.0 TDI options (no I won't be going electric - nowhere to charge it for one thing!) but again, I do value the power and comfort of the bigger 3.0. It's just never stressed whatever the situation.

But that leaves limited options - especially if I want something that addresses all the above.. basically a 2016 onwards Q7, but as I said at the start they ain't cheap and have lots of mileage in that 2016-19 bracket.

Any alternatives I haven't considered that wouldn't drive me demented and make me wish I had just stuck with the A7? Must be auto, well equipped, good on the back but easy-ish on the wallet. Suggestions appreciated!

Cant see a good enough reason not to just keep what you have.

Especially if you're happy with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 29,799 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

    That's the thing though..

    Power, toys,layout... Check

Visibility in an suv world and long term "compliance" with my back.. Not as much

Plus even though it's superior to my previous 2010 A6 LeMans in almost every way (more efficient, more modern interior, a few more toys), I've never fallen in love with it the way I did with the A6. Don't know why - the A7 is the prettier, sportier version after all!

I've even been looking at similar era (2016+) 7 series which I have to admit, do look nice, and I generally do not like BMWs at all!

I keep coming back to the Q7 as the obvious solution (unless I want to drop to 2L which opens up a lot more choices even within the VAG stable) but I had a 09 one for a few days at one point and while it was like driving a tank, a fuel tanker following me is what I really needed! I'm sure the newer ones are more efficient though?

Maybe they'll undo Brexit before it becomes a need rather than thought to change and we'll get all the high spec cheap premium cars again!

I was thinking some sort of Lexus SUV but the interior layouts are quite confusing to say the least

Mate bought a 2015 730 D and paid for a mechanic to give it a full pre purchase check over. Got it for €15k ish and after a few months he has had to spend a small fortune on bits like the suspension. Cracking car to drive but like most luxury yokes a potential money pit.

Time is contagious, everybody's getting old.

Have you looked at a diesel Cayenne; same 3.0 TDV6 but in a lower tune. It’s less desirable as secondhand compared to Q7 as it doesn’t have 7 seats. Assume that doesn’t matter to you. I bought a 2015 back in 2020 with 47 kms on it. A similarly aged Q7 was at least 10k more and that was a non-franchised dealer as opposed to manufacturer second hand warranty. Have driven it now for 5 years, serviced it with a local Indy and it’s been very cheap so far.

just to add, Uk prices 15-22k currently. Some NI so no VAT issues, just VRT. GB ones might be VAT qualifying.

I know someone on here has the knowledge how to sort this 😀

Radio on 2023 Renault Trafic goes off every time I open the door.

Also the clock resets to 0:00 every time as well.

I disconnected the sensor on the door but the central locking is not working then.

Surely some wire on back of stereo could be pulled to sort it???🤔

Or even if I could get my hands on a wiring diagram for the stereo.

    Its same radio as this.

I was going to say a w12 A8 would tick all your boxes, I remember you lamenting the demise of the diesel v8 ones, but I think you also do megamiles so the w12 would not work?

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 4,744 Mod ✭✭✭✭TherapyBoy

Could be a bad earth or maybe some live circuit earthing when you open the door somewhere it shouldn’t be earthing. Clock & the radio are possibly fed from the same place so fixing one problem would probably fix them all.

If you’re handy, get a 12v test lamp, attach it to a good earth, remove the radio & earth the radio through the test lamp. Then try opening the door & see if the radio stays working. If it does you should be able to get around the problem by running a new negative from the radio wiring loom & earthing it somewhere else.

If you’re not handy, bring it to an auto-electrician or a car radio shop & ask them to take a look.

Its not a fault. It's like that from day one and someone else with the same van has the exact same issue.

Its either a safety thing or just to conserve the battery as these yokes are muck with the stop start system.

    Its very hard on batteries.

Internet says that's likely related to sudden voltage drop (battery on its way out) upon opening door and/or a bug in infotainment software. I am however surprised that despite "it's like that from day one" you did not bring it to dealer to have it sorted under warranty.

The quickest (but far from ideal) workaround would be blocking door sensor in "door closed" position to avoid the issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,167 ✭✭✭✭blade1

Dealer told about it several times and that's the way they are. not a fault apparently.

Only way to "block" sensor is disconnect it but that means door doesn't lock.

Happens with passenger door as well.

If I could figure out the wiring at the back of radio i'd try it that way to see would that stop it from happening.

Well, clock resetting to 0:00 is IMO obvious fault, whatever dealer says. I would insist to have that sorted.
