I've signed up for this, be interesting to compare 'mtb' Vs 'roadie' organisers type route/tech level I've never cycled around there so it'll be good for a nosey around.

I was chatting to one of the organisers and I got the impression there are two superimposed routes with certain points you can take one of two paths, one for MTB and one for Gravel. I am not going to lie but bar the heavy rain making the MTB bits to much of a slosh, I'll be picking the more technical bits on my CX bike each time. Did they send you a GPS route? I only entered yesterday.

I signed up today and you know more than I do. 🤣

    Sounds good though.

Maps have arrived, hoping I can do the longer route on the mtb, looks good.

I'd say so, it brings in an extra laneway and across a farmers field, a quick look I don't think the climbs will be any slower on a MTB, probably only slower on the fireroad descents but in the end, I doubt there is going to be a huge difference time wise. I am going to bring both bikes on the day and make up my mind based on what they say at the sign on.

Well that was more xc than gravel in quite a few places, tough course. Day really brightened up through the event and the food in the pub afterwards was lovely.

Managed to snap a drive side spoke about 20km (Power 😎), on a nothing climb.

    Quality spin by Slaney CC.

I regretted not using the MTB but decent numbers and rare you were alone for more than a few minutes. I went into the first climb in the top 3 and finished the climb 2nd last.

Soup in the pub after was a life saver.

Prices seem a bit strong? Gravel Grind West 100km is 55 quid, with a day licence (stupidly priced) at 20 quid, you're at 75, as opposed to 110 for this event. That's close to 50% more.

Actually yeah I just went back and checked how much I paid. Bit of a jump for sure. W200 levels after one event….

Hi - yes just checked my receipt for the GRS Wicklow 100km from October and that was 65euro, vs 90euro for this Slieve Blooms 100km. The Wicklow event I did really enjoy and was planning on entering this, probably still will but that is some jump in price…

Big jump in price but I'm booked in anyway, interesting to see if anything is different/improved this time around. I'm sure the organisers are up against it anyway with every single little thing in Ireland costing absolute fortune.

Would like a nicer finisher medal, appreciate the eco aspect of the wooden medal and all that but I'd still like something a bit more substantial to add to the collection. Marathons with lower fees and bigger hurdles in organisation manage to offer higher quality.

I see event licence cost as €10 which I think is fair. I agree €20 would be insane and I'd stop doing the odd event

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,839 ✭✭✭cletus

Yeah, sorry, 10.55 day licence, 6.50 booking fee, €107 total, or there abouts. Still pricey, in fairness

Anyone know why Ballyhoura is gone from the original calendar dates?

I had no idea who biking.ie were so I looked them up, they are very experienced in the MTB with loads of event experience so I'd imagine it'll be very well ran.

The trouble with a commercial venture is you have to pay for nearly everything and certainly not have near the volunteer inputs for charity/community events.

The man-hours needed to put on a top quality gravel event, or any bike event over a large area is enormous.

Off the top of my head just some of the areas that hoover time and good will!

    *Route planning

    *Risk assessment

    *Route marking

    *Organising a suitable base/facility

    *Food

*Organising marshalls for parking, traffic, route marshalling

*Tidy up of base and car parks

*Tidy up of route, sign removal

    *Social media promotion/complaints

    *Organising insurance/permission/indemnities

I've seen how the local crews have turned themselves inside out to make event as good as possible but it hoovers up some time from everyone.

Personally I haven't ridden any events in years as I can personally plan routes that are going to be better than any event; that's not arrogance it's just the dumbing down of routes for events that you don't have to for solo/small group cycles.

Imagine the FBD rep looking at the above on a route

I'm sure it'll be a great event. I was going to sign up to do it myself, but as I said in my previous post, it's almost 50% more expensive than the Gravel Grind West, an event I've done in the past that had and was all the things you mentioned above, well organised, hot food at the end, great course.

I'm not trying to put people off, I was just surprised

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,729 ✭✭✭Large bottle small glass

Ah yeah I know that just trying to put a bit of context around the headache of organising these things.

The gravel grind event is effectively Marrey cycles doing an event in his home town, where he's still active in cycling. I'd imagine there's a big local buy in.

That might help with keeping prices down and help on insurance/indemnity side of things.

I'm the same as you I wouldn't pay over 100km for a cycle around the back roads and woods.

I'm in a WhatsApp chat that Marrey is in, he was doing an unofficial but pretty hardcore gravel ride last summer. I might give it a go if he puts it up again this year

What's the surface like for the Slieve Bloom event? What sort of tyres would be recommended?

Is that the same Marrey (Padraig I think) that organised the off-road audax around Lough Corrib starting in Mayo? Did the 100k a few years back and possibly on of the best days I've had on a bike even though I think I was last person back and missed the medal time by a couple of hours.

I'd imagine this is the opposite for biking.ie compared to the Wicklow one where Niall is local. I'd imagine venue/ base is a lot different money wise compared to Wicklow. On the other hand, I think their doubling up with the blitz on the Sunday?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭casion3

It's all relative lads, if events are good I dont mind paying the fee.

How much are people paying for concert tickets?

In the motorsport world the entry fee for a 1 day rally is over 800 bucks.

For biking.ie and the like they are trying to put on a decent event while making a living.

The entry fee wouldnt be the gating item to stopping me doing something I love.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,839 ✭✭✭cletus

I was mostly surprised at the price discrepancy, rather than telling people how to spend their money, but equally it's a bit disingenuous to suggest that the cost of a thing isn't at least a contributing factor to the decision to purchase.

Anyway, I think the cost has been done to death, so I'll stop posting now and let people discuss the event

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 148 ✭✭themighty

Hey lads, I got coaxed into signing up for this. I'm going to be borrowing/renting a bike for the day.

How rough is the 100k circuit? Would I get away with road shoes and pedals? I can get a lend of MTB shoes & pedals for the day, if needs be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,381 ✭✭✭saccades

If you need to dab, you'll regret road shoes. I suspect it'll be on the tougher end of the scale, so much harder to climb at speed and not sure if they are caught in the same regs around hunting and land access as Wicklow, which made cut off times hard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 148 ✭✭themighty

Thanks saccades, l'll borrow the shoes so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,381 ✭✭✭saccades

    Np, good luck!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,796 ✭✭✭at1withmyself

Yep he also had a 200km version as well. Always wanted to do that. Wonder is it still running

pricey- and offputting tbh. is this the new spirit of gravel?

prefer to do my local hills in southeast galway

Just by way of comparison I signed up for the Tuscany trail; there's 450/550km options over 6 days but you can ride quicker if you like.

    It was €99.

No idea how they are making money at that, I assume there's other sources of income/support be in tourism associations or sponsorship.

It sold out in early January
