By winning 4/5 games just like we did last year. I’d take another 4/5 this year too.

You see this is the problem with the pro Crowley camp

You have yourself saying he steered us to a win in France and a 6N, you have another prominent Munster poster discounting munster's recent slump and absolving Crowley of those losses.

You can't have it both ways.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,225 ✭✭✭TomsOnTheRoof

Yeah it's a real head scratcher. Posted our largest ever win in France with him too. Some going for such an ordinary player. If only he was weak defensively or lacked pace or had trouble with discipline. At least then he'd have the backing of the experts on here. Posters with such well informed and educated takes as "Baird is a second row" and "Kleyn has no chance of being called up by South africa".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,870 ✭✭✭sprucemoose

i think pointing out that crowley wasnt the main reason for munster's poor recent form is perfectly fair, seeing as it is true. he hasnt been amazing or anything but he has played pretty well at times and the problems largely arent down to him

To be fair, I don't think I am "absolving Crowley of those losses."

I've little disagreement with characterising his performance against, say ,Castres and Leinster as poor, or even really poor. His performances those days certainly contributed towards the loss. (His place kicking in particular).

But absolutely no one is going to convince me his performance vs Toulon contributed to the loss or was "really poor".

That's what I'm talking about. And I think - somewhat occasionally on here - the performance / result of the team gets conflated with the performance of the individual.

That's a much more nuanced point than "absolving Crowley of thoses losses".

(Also, you're putting me in the "pro Crowley camp" but bear in mind, I've said I'd start Prendergast vs France).

Missed a trick not putting Edogbo on the bench, James Ryan ain't all that. Maybe it's a fitness/lineout thing.

Good to see Cian Prendergast get the nod and finally jettisoning James Lowe who has been looking very ordinary for a while. Not sure our wingers will get much ball with those centres but maybe Sam's crossfields or long passes will bring them into play. As I said before I'd have started Crowley away from home and look at Sam at home.

Best time to play the French, first up, maybe we'll catch them cold but I think it could be a long night.

Six Nations is the best tournament in rugby, love it

This is a silly take. He's shown a lot of high quality play this season. He runs the attack well, though probably not as well as Prendergast. He has a very good kicking game, off the tee and in attack, and is more physical than Prendergast. Most crucially, in comparison to Crowley, is that he can put structure on a game. That's been the largest single differentiator that's cost Crowley the starting spot imo, the attack just doesn't function well because of him.

I dread those long passes from Prendergast. They look so telegraphed I just worry he is gonna start getting caught out in a big moment.

Where did I say he steered us to a win?

But reading some of the comments here you'd think we won the wooden spoon with him playing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,666 ✭✭✭SaoPaulo41

Funny you say that, i was thinking the same thing can it happening maybe twice .

You literally just said "how did we win a 6N with Crowley at the helm"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,543 ✭✭✭clsmooth

What’s your opinion on Crowley’s development so far? Is he a markedly better player now than what he was in 2023?

He’s had some games where he’s excellent (Leinster this year, LAR last season) but too many games where he’s been average especially for Ireland. Thought he might have kicked on earlier this season but the inconsistency seems to remain although he’s playing in an out of form Munster team which doesn’t help.

I mean, I dont think we need to waste time to go through your posting history to come to the conclusion you defend Crowley at pretty much every juncture

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,017 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

    Fair enough.

I mean, you're literally replying to a post where I've acknowledged games where he's played poorly, and have said I'd start Prendergast vs France, but fair enough.

Did you read any of the previous comments about Crowley?

Listening to the 42 podcast, and the reason edogbos not selected is simply because he's not ready yet. There's so much to learn and he's so new to the camp that he just hasn't so his learnings down yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,193 ✭✭✭KaneToad

James Ryan, the man who played 2 Lions tests in 2025, is a far better bet than Edwin Edogbo.

Edwin has a bit to go yet before he makes a green 23.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,077 ✭✭✭50HX

Any chance the Lions of 2025 could stop being held up as some world beaters...it was Australia they played who ffs were ranked 8th in the world at the time iirc.

They would have had their arse handed to them in SA or NZ.

Ryan is the better bet than Edogbo for Thursday based on the fact that Edogbo is still a v raw young player with v little exposure.

If James Ryan never went on the Lions he'd still be starting ahead of him.

There’s a tendency to want change almost for the sake of it which is why most of us on Boards would be hopelessly poor at selection. Ryan is an excellent talent and will come back fighting as he always does , Edogbo competing to get on the team can only be good for Ireland

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,005 ✭✭✭almostover

Same old, same old from Irish rugby. New to camp, needs to learn the patterns etc. Rugby is first and foremost a physical game. Ed Ed is a beast in that regard. You can't learn what he has in any camp.

Not looking for him to play 80 mins. But he is well capable of a 15-20mins appearance from the bench to punch holes in a tiring French defence. Serious jackal threat at the ruck too.

Jegou, Auradou and Nouchi are all younger than Edogbo also and in the French 23 for Thursday. All made their French debuts at 20 years of age.

If Edogbo was French he'd be in their 23 on Thursday.

Ryan and Edogbo could both have been in the matchday 23. I'm not sure what the angle is on including Nick Timoney in a 6/2 split. Would have been an ideal 60mins change, fresh 2nd row pairing. Young power player with an experienced, hardworking lineout caller.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 597 ✭✭✭Tommybojangles

Its ironic you say same old same old when dropping in Edogbo for France away is type of thing that would have happened in the 80s or 90s when we were sh!te.

Players having to earn a place in the team by showing they've nailed the basics and can do their job is much more typical of the historic success we've seen under Schmidt and Farrell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,005 ✭✭✭almostover

We're going to keep having the historic success of QF exits in the RWC so.

Our selection policy is still ultra conservative. Andy's hand has been forced this week through injury. Only James Lowe was dropped in favour of a more in form player.

France are backing 3 young dynamic loose forwards for the game on Thursday. We've 1 guy whose older than all 3 of them and we won't even bench him.

Comparing Ireland to France is utter stupidity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,673 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

Starting Beirne over Ryan in the 2nd row is more likely to blow up in our face, given their relative abilities in the lineout.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 597 ✭✭✭Tommybojangles

    Ultra conservative.

We have 6 (Six!) Starters Thursday remaining from the World Cup Qf. And people are whinging over a fella with less than 15 starts for munster not being in the 23.

Our selection policy is still ultra conservative.

Honestly not sure people even know what this means any more, I certainly don’t.

France are backing 3 young dynamic loose forwards

Guillard is 25, the same age as Cian Prendergast and older than Joe McCarthy. Cros is 31, Jelonch is 29, Ollivon is 32. Jegou is the only one who’s noticeably younger.

They would be playing a 35 year old tight head if they could but they’ve had to replace him with a… 32 year old. Really trusting the youth there.

Not sure what the point is here tbh. Whatever this French team is, a carefree embrace of youth it is not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,804 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

I would have gone with Frawley, Balacounce, West. McCloskey, Stockdale. Naughton, Devine. Bohan, Sheehan, Clarkson, Josh Murphy, Joe McCarthy, Beirne, Jansen and Boyle. So a slight change overall
