just jumping off the Fulham result being bad (not trying to claim you said anything).

I think the Fulham game at the start of the season is like a few games/results we had. Forest away, Spurs away being two other 'good' examples. In isolution, without context, they aren't terrible results. for me it wasn't simply that we drew with Fulham, or Spurs - it was the manner in which we did it. It was how we played, how were were opened up etc. We'd seen a good performance (and loss) vs Arsenal, and then that hope was quickly eroded by a return to normal vs Fulham. Sesko being on the bench also annoyed me…

Even Everton. the issue wasn't just the result. which was terrible given the context of the game - but the tactical approach and performance was terribe. Even if we had gotten two goals late, with the same approach, it would have been a terrible performance and approach.

While on the other hand you have games like Villa - where I actually think we played well, but lost because of two incidents of (very) poor defending.

I don’t think I said it was a very bad result but I opened the door to be proven wrong. I went back and checked and didn’t see it, but apparently I did numerous times. I asked to be shown but I was ignored. Anyway…

Going into that Fulham game, we had done the double over them the season before. After the Arsenal game where we looked good, there was definitely an expectation that we would do well. Bruno missed a pen, Cunha and Mount were linking up but it wasn’t fully clicking.

I get the Sesko on the bench being annoying, but from the start we looked like we would score from the players on the field. He came on early second half and didn’t really do much, but we had no control of the game at that point anyway.

    Don't disagree.
I was just adding my 2c that I thought it was a meh result (in isolation) but a disappointing result in terms of our performance. We started well, faded, were hanging on at the end. Much like most of the previous season. It was the immediate regression to familiar patterns that has me point that game out. Same with Forest and Spurs after Liverpool/Brighton (and Sunderland?). A moment of some optimism, a crashing return to 'normal'.

Wild comments from a fella whose team has a net spend of 360 million pounds since just last January.

Impressive stat this, and as I say he's been more solid than spectacular.

Onana's last 18 games I believe we lost 9. Not all down to him of course but a big factor.

One thing that City are excellent at is getting good fees for the young players they move on each year.

Hopefully with the ‘brains trust ‘ we have in place should try to improve the clubs record in that regard…..every penny counts.

Lammens has been solid no question but I wish he wouldn't parry shots right back into the 6 yard box. He does it 2-3 times a game and whilst he's young and a reliable keeper hopefully he gets out of that habit!

Lammens has been great bo doubt about it but the lack of clean sheets is worrying. Not just on him alone to be fair

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,404 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

Haven't noticed it being 2-3 times a game, although he did do it against Fulham from a free.

That was Onana's bread and butter though and the main thing I noticed on his highlight reels before he signed.

Lammens hasn't been keeping clean sheets but has conceded a lot of screamers. Of all the goals he has conceded I can only remember maybe twice thinking it was solely his fault or he should have gotten to it.

It's not a habit,no keeper does it on purpose, speed and movement of ball coupled with their vision and whats going on in their eyeline all effect how they connect with the shot,

so 9 times out of 10 it usually ends up being powerful shot into a box full of players that the keeper sees late that gets parried into danger!

Yeah this has been a big thing with them helping to keep the net spend down. Chelsea another club that gets good fees for players no longer wanted at the club. Liverpool another.

Going to the Spurs game but don’t have flights sorted yet. Prices are crazy to fly to Manchester, anyone experience flying to alternative airports like Liverpool or Leeds? Or are there other ones that would have a good fast train service to Manchester? Would pay for a taxi either as we can split it between two of us

I also don't remember him giving the ball away cheaply to the opposing forward much. Or booting it straight out for a throw-in.

Remember the old routine routine when we'd play 1-2s between Onana and Maguire, but ultimately couldn't get out of our own half.

I'd really love to hear from Amorim. How on earth the club decided in the summer that no new keeper or midfielder was required is mindboggling.

Yeah I flew in to Leeds once and Liverpool several times. Bus from Liverpool was the best option back then

It gives a defence a huge boost in confidence if there's a solid keeper behind them. You're far more likely to commit to a tackle or a block knowing that if it doesn't work out there's always a good keeper there that could save it.

Another reason why it's been defensively better since Lammens came in; he uses the ball batter. His passing is so much better, defenders are comfortable with the give and go to him, and he does take up more central positions for the pass than Onana did meaning he's in position if something does go wrong, he's set. Even his his rushed clearances, they usually go out of play near the half way line giving our defence to set up rather than a quick throw catch us out.

That's not even taking into account the difference between Lammens and Onana in terms of catching the ball, punching the ball, and actual shot-stopping ability and closing down the angles for a shot.

And Lammens isn't the best keeper in the league, there's a few ahead of him on overall talent. He's just very competent at the basics, and it's certainly been a massive boost to the team to have that in place.

And once again for the record, what on earth were the club at signing Onana? They must have signed him purely on the basis that he played in a Champions League final, surely any sort of scouting would have seen he was stone useless.

Ten Hag worked with Onana at Ajax, so he can have no excuses. Just a bad judge of player.

Flew into Liverpool and we were under time pressure to get to the match so a taxi/Uber was our only option. Before ordering an Uber we asked a few taxis for a price and they were quoting £80-90. There was an Uber nearby and it was just over £50.

You would want a lot of spare time if taking public transport from Liverpool airport as I think all the buses and trains have to go from there into Liverpool center first, and then onwards to wherever.

Obviously, he's only counting the on the books spending…

Flying in to Birmingham is also an option, there’s a train straight to Manchester City centre from the airport.

What’s the latest on Matthijs de Ligt ? He must have missed a dozen games now at this stage.

If I was going for the day then I'd be on the first flight to Leeds at 6:25, gives you loads of time to get to Manchester and have some breakfast and get to OT for the 12:30 match and fly home that evening through Leeds. Makes for a long day but you have limited options unless you want to fly in the night before or fly home on the Sunday. The bus from the airport to Leeds CC is about 20 minutes and the train from Leeds CC to Manchester was about 2 hours IIRC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 100 ✭✭howdydoo83

The Leeds airport to cc bus takes an hour. Liverpool airport to South parkway bus/taxi and about a 45min train to Manchester is my preferred route. Birmingham has a train station at the airport but tis expensive and takes 2hrs

He was asked about the injured players before Fulham and all he said about de Ligt was, “He's not trained with us yet, so we’re just working through the process really of getting him back as soon as we can,”. Before the Arsenal game said he had a set back and that he would hopefully be back in the next few weeks.

Lol... Garnacho is wildly unlikeable. Caused so much trouble along with his arse of a brother. Fairly uninspiring since he went to Chelsea. Then having little jabs like this before Chelsea limp out of the Carabao with him only getting the last 20 minutes.
