Gurriers in Naas. Good night out. Spiegeltent is lovely, really nice space for a gig. Certainly not sold out, loads of space which is disappointing but the lads were excellent. Some new stuff which I'm not sure about but all the classics were great,Top of the Bill, Approachable, Nausea, Sign of the Times etc. As i say, good night out.

Jam-packed Workman’s tonight for an international double bill of doom.

Couldn’t figure out who the support was from their flyer but it turned out to be an excellent Coltaine from Germany. Lead singer was in total control throughout. Well done.

Would have gone home happy if the gig had ended with them but Faetooth, on their first visit to Ireland, were well worth staying for. No frills or graces from the female three-piece, just solid song after song.

Westside Cowboy brilliant in the Grand Social tonight. frantic indie guitar, lovely slower folky stuff, just a lovely set. Place was jammed. 2 guitars,3 vocalists, nice harmonies, yeah, deadly. Talked to all of them after, so sound. They'll be somewhere bigger next time.

Three guitars? I don't ever recall a 4 piece band where three of them take lead singer on different songs? GS was wedged, so yes definitely a bigger venue next time. Support "Theater" were ok.

Well, 2 and a bass, you know what I mean. Thought Theatre were great too. Powerful sound when they're really on it. She's a superstar.

I've tried a couple of times to see Bold Love and failed so I was delighted to catch their last ever gig in Bello Bar last night. Really tight band, great songs. Crowd were brilliant, guessing a lot of friends and family but everyone seemed to know every word. Real shame they're splitting up, feel like they could push on but I'm happy l caught them.

Outstanding gig from The Stereo MCs last night at The Button Factory.
The second of two shows they were in super form from the off.

Wasn’t expecting too much as they’ve been ‘ around the block’ for some time but the energy and sound they brought to their show was electric.
Played for over two hours , all their hits and more, it really was an enjoyable experience.

Gurriers on Friday night were very good. I forgot my loops and ended up close to one of the speakers, ears were ringing for hours after. I would have loved music like this in Naas when I was a youngster, I hope they appreciated it and in fairness they look like they did. Plenty of moshing going on. Great young band.

Great triple bill in The Grand Social. Kicked off with Layen_ who were so good. Some fantastic tunes in the doom genre from the Limerick band.

Then BBFT gave another excellent performance of their eclectic mix of several genres, still can’t pigeonhole them.

Bees & Sawdust, a post-hardcore-dance-punk group (their words) headlined. Where have these guys been hiding?

From Galway originally, they’re now based in Dublin but never seen them billed anywhere before tonight. Anyway, they’re now on the list, just superb. Catch them if you can, you won’t be disappointed.

Didn't realise anyone other than David Byrne sang lead for Talking Heads?

Tina and Chris sang on Genius of Love on Stop Making Sense.

As I said, at a stretch!

Actually all four when Brendan O'Hare was in the band, as he sang lead on Sidewinder from Bandwagonesque. All their drummers have contributed BVs too…

First gig of 2026 tonight which was Heaven Can Wait: A Tribute to Meatloaf in Cork Opera House.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and so did my father, who demanded when they announced a return gig in 2027 that I get tickets for us. Never got to see the real Meatloaf but this was a superb tribute act that did his songs justice.

A night of mixed emotions on Saturday night at a packed out Bello Bar. Bold Love performing their final gig with support from J Smith (Kojaque's brother). It was a great night with some fantastic music as always from a very very talented bunch of lovely young people. Some tears were shed and vast quantities of Guinness consumed. It's a shame but best of luck to them on their future endeavors.

On a side note, some of us ended up in Whelans after, where we had a less than pleasant experience with a well known tv racing pundit and ex jockey. A bit shocked of how much of a p****k he was. A huge fan of his btw up to Saturday and a big fan of racing for as long as I can remember. It's nice to be nice.

That's me right in front of you, blocking your view of the drummer 🤣

Ahh no way 😃. Deadly. I was standing on the chairs behind you. My Mrs and friends were just to your right 😃. Anton (drummer) was on fire. Glad you enjoyed it.

Prima Facie - 31st January, Gaiety Theatre

No superlatives do justice to Jodie Comer's performance which rightly won awards. To be able to recite words without missing a beat, without even a correction in speaking, for 1 hour 40 mins to me is absolutely incredible. When you add into the mix that she's playing one person but 2 very different versions of that character and is representing other people, has some co-ordination to get through etc it's really incredible. To amp it up further it must be emotionally draining to go through this performance which veers from really positive and uplifting to traumatising. Her performance wouldn't hit as much if the material she was working with wasn't great too and Suzie Miller's script is on point too - I'm very lucky to have caught this performance, I think it's going to be a film - but if you can see this you won't regret it.

Magdalena Bay - 5th February, Vicar St

Tickets to this were like hens teeth and between checking TM and Toutless every day I was very lucky to get tickets and I doubt anyone in attendance felt empty handed. I must confess I only came across them last year, I think I had a playlist on and Image or Death and Romance came on after, and then this happened a couple more times so I checked out Imaginal Disk and what an album that is. I'm not as familiar with their work before then, they have a few mix tapes and 1 album before - on Thurs they played most if not all Imaginal Disk and a good mix of some material that came before then as well as some of the new tracks they've released, including the sublime Second Sleep. Their songs really come to life on stage and sound more powerful backed by brilliant drummer, Matt on bass and a synth player too while Mica barely stops for a breather. They must've rattled through over 20 songs in the hour 40 mins they played and were in great form - an absolutely joyous experience.

A lot of fifty-somethings and perhaps sixty-somethings had a good time last night at ExTC 😀

    20260206_212935.JPG

The drummer is 70 so there is hope for us yet 😉

Yes, he's the only original member, but XTC have so many great songs which deserve to be heard. Andy Partridge infamously gave up live performances decades ago due to stagefright, then his ears got blasted to fûck in a studio accident, so the original line-up is never going to be a goer
