And Brazilian pirates are hijacking satellites. Someone with a scanner and a suitable antenna can hear them in Ireland. But I am talking about fibre circuits.

They are not "hijacking" satellites. They are simply using open transponders on military satellites that were intended for military communications. It has been going on for some decades.

We have to use non technical language here. Thousands of references online to hijacking, typical one below.

"These days the satellites are often hijacked by Brazilian radio pirates, who use the satellites for long range communications."

With the media, the broadcasters tend to operate on the mushroom principle (feed them crap and keep them in the dark) because the journalists tend to be somewhat challenged when it comes to knowledge of Technology. They feed them press releases and that allows them to write articles about the evils of dodgyboxes. Successful prosecutions are easier for the broadcasters to promote. It is a propaganda war for the broadcasters.

To those who actually understand what is happening, the satellites are not being "hijacked". That would involve compromising the control and telemetry channels (the control signals for the satellite) for the satellite and taking over control of the satellite. That's what hijacking a satellte means. In simple terms, the open transponder will accept any transmission in its bandwidth and will then relay it or retransmit it. The use of the word "hijacking" makes it look so much more exciting, doesn't it? The satellites are not being "hijacked" as this is actually a design feature.

Dodgy box is a shorthand understood by the non technical. Makes it sound move exciting than Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services or unauthorized streaming devices. The OP of the thread knew that when they chose the title.

It sounds like you're saying the public are thick so they deserve to be gaslit by the Indo and clowns like Weckler. The headlines are more "exciting" though.

    Gaslit is an exciting word.

    Ok that made me laugh.

My point stands though. Just because some might not know all the technical terms involved doesn't justify the scaremongering hyperbole with photos of handcuffs, hijackings etc. from the Indo and others.

Do you think that your clay footed idols in the media come up with such phrases? Any fool can make something more complex. It takes knowledge and understanding to explain things simply. And as with most businesses, piracy develops its own lexicon and phrases. It is basic marketing.

The broadcasters tend to focus on spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) about dodgybox use. If this FUD propagated by recycled press releases in the media deters people from using dodgyboxes and subscribing to their service, then it is a win for the broadcasters. The problem is that some of the broadcasters seem to be pricing themselves out of the market and people are naturally going for the cheaper option. Previously, the scale of piracy on any system was limited by the number of pirate devices that could be used on that system. That often meant a compromised official box had to be used and that kept the level of piracy down to an "acceptable" level.

What happened with the second generation of dodgybox was that the broadcasters lost control over their programming because the programming could be accessed with devices that were not provided by the broadcaster. The basic model of piracy had changed. That change went unnoticed by the media because they didn't understand the technology of piracy. It is a shame because the dynamics are quite easy to understand.

In simple terms, if an official broadcaster box has to be used to access a service, that limits the potential for piracy. It can never exceed 100%. What has happened with the second generation of dodgyboxes is that broadcasters are faced with competing networks of broadcasters (the dodgybox network operators) using the same programming and these "broadcasters" don't need official hardware for their services. They can use ordinary hardware because it is the software (app) that allows access.

That has worried the rights holders who provide the programming to the broadcasters. Some of the price rises may be due to the broadcasters doing what is known as "sweating the assets". A large percentage of subscribers will continue to subscribe and will not use dodgyboxes. To compensate for the increased costs of programming and the loss of subscribers to dodgybox operations, the broadcasters will increase the subscription fees because they know that many subscribers will continue to pay because it is easier and more convenient than going down the dodgybox route. They will continue to pay until their financial pain threshhold is reached and they stop or downgrade their subscription.

Your phrase "the non technical" includes most of the journalists in the media as very few of them have any deep knowledge of Technology. They are at serious risk of being replaced by relatively simple AI fed by press releases. Did you ever come up with the actual statistics to support those claims of all those millions of visits made by dodgybox owners to websites?

some of the so called experts here don't know all the technical terms or somehow believe that companies like Sky are evil incarnate while blindy trusting the cliams of VPN companies and their zero logs guarentees. Do you know how must companies pass an audit? By showing the auditor what they want the auditors what they want to see.

Never mind recommend cheap Chinese boxes which be loaded with malware which can give criminals access to your personal info.

So called experts don't like being told they are wrong because they know everything.

It will be a double bill with the feature about Mexican drug cartels hacking (doesn't that sound exciting?) cellular networks. Of course the bad guys will be the heros.

Did anyone experience some server down time yesterday lunchtime?

Mine was down for a couple of hours, until it was sorted. No biggie.

Add a pic of a deranged burglar leaping out of a dodgy box and you'll have Weckler's job in no time. Dont forget the black and white stripes, eye mask and swag bag.

On some boxes you can always flash different roms.

And anyway I have a few of them and there's no real problem on any of them.

But I'm not so called expert 😁. And there's nothing to steal from me, bar from my kids or dogs..best of luck to anyone who will try 😁

You're three years spouting the same stuff pretending to be in the know. You were telling people two years ago to watch this space in a year, or along those lines. We're still waiting…

The horse has bolted on iptv and there's no going back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,931 ✭✭✭irishgeo

I never claimed to be in the know, not do I work for sky.

I just trying to inform the people spouting rubbish here about technology they think they know best on.

IPTV is the future of TV delivery yes. Illegal IPTV who knows.

Everyone was claiming card sharing would not come to an end.

You get up on your hind legs any time obvious scaremongering is called out. Probably because you do a fair bit of it yourself. Its all conjecture. You dont back anything up. Vague half whispers about things that might happen here at some undefined time in future.

Give an example of a VPN provider that coughed up logs for a case in Ireland.

Wheres the proof that reputable tv box providers ship malware? Not 20 euro boxes from aliexpress

Amazon could really disrupt illegal streaming by blocking offending apps. They started doing this before xmas but not in any meaningful way. Hard to know if it's internally a complex process or the whole exercise was just a token gesture to appease their content partners.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,757 ✭✭✭dubrov

So according to you, the big VPN companies maintain extensive logs despite the associated costs and potential to destroy their business. Then they pay independent auditors and falsify the information provided to them. And this happens because?
