main reason you be on that plan is that you need full orthopaedic cover. If that’s not likely in the short term I can recommend alternatives but I just want to confirm this point?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 364 ✭✭brodsy

    No ortho needed Ruddy

a few options to have a look at:

    my plan 500 day 2 day (https://www.totalhealthcover.ie/health-insurance-quote?preselectedPlan=180H3D1) - €1,035

My plan 150 day to day https://www.totalhealthcover.ie/health-insurance-quote?preselectedPlan=176H3D1 €1.314

If you want to improve your cover dramatically I’d be looking at moving to healthguide 2 https://www.totalhealthcover.ie/health-insurance-quote?preselectedPlan=170H3D1 €1,604 (current plan costing €1,512 if paying d/d)

if preference for staying with Laya let me know but Irish life best value currently for plans at this price point

    Thanks ruddy,

That's a great starting point for sure. I didn't realize the loading would be so much but it is what it is now at this stage, on your recommendation Ive narrowed it down to the laya signify care, or the Irish life health my plan 350. Both seem to offer morealess the same cover.

Can I ask a question on both companies??

so I know in Galway laya have a drop in clinic for minor issues be it a bit of stitching, xrays and scans etc that I've heard great praise for, does Irish life have the equivalent or can you use the Galway clinic A&E the same way??

Good advise offered above on the minefield of health insurance plans so presume you're in the industry with some insight, thanks.

No plan specific question but why is the tax credit for medical insurance still capped at €1k per adult (€200 tax credit) when most plans far exceed that. Also why have the tax credit at 20% and separate health expenses for that matter also at 20% when a high proportion of workers are paying the higher rate. Surprised the health insurers and paying customers aren't making this more of an issue.

Irish life allow you to use the Laya clinics. You just pay and clam the benefit (70% of costs up to max €200 per visit). Irish life have their own clinics in Dublin and cork but you can use any of the Laya clinics or any hse minor injury units ..

    Hi Ruddy

Looking for some advice, 41 year old male based in west of Ireland, no prior conditions, healthy no real medical expenses bar annual visit to gp and dentist. Have no prior health insurance so know loading will apply, wondering to see what plan you would recommend if you get a chance Cheers

Hi Ruddy, just found this thread- eye opening stuff. Thank you in advance. My wife and I are with Laya. She on Simply Connect € 2712. I on Connect Choice € 1824 per year. Haven’t moved in years! Covered for 40 years. Living in Mayo. Probably Galway hospitals would suffice. Early70’s and mid 60’s. No health issues so far. Willing to move. Brother in law and wife recommend PMI60 10 at a much better price. Your advise appreciated, please.

If you had the time Ruddy, I'd be interested to see what you could recommend for Laya, in not adverse to moving companies but it's more about bang for my buck while being realistic as to what's realistically available in my area too.

connect choice was a great plan but since January it’s increased in price and excess increased alot. Also 40% shortfall on ortho..was previously 20%. For this reason not such a big fan any more. Hence why I’d be saying to consider a change to simply health choice, slightly cheaper and still has 80% ortho but a reduction in GP cover to 50%.

Does you wife need full Ortho cover? If she does I’d be saying to increase spend slightly to prosper advance which is miles better cover. If she doesn’t need full Ortho I’d be saying move to inspire plus which is the same plan as the current plan with 80% coverage for Ortho

regarding PMI 60 10 I don’t like the high outpatient excess on it. This means you get nothing for the first €100 off outpatient claims. Eg €25 for physio benefit you would need 4 physio visits before getting anything!

If staying with Laya id be looking at signify or inspire.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

I would be saying just get some level of cover, loading will be 14% so not ridiculous. I would say even start at first cover level with irish life or if you potentially want to access private hospitals over coming years have a look at my plan range. Most important thing is just to get some level of cover going and I would say as you are healthy and low expenses look to get something cheaper to serve your waiting periods and loadings and look to increase cover in time as outpatient claims increase

I was just wondering about 31 year old, previously insured (first time) with Signify. She has let the cover lapse since last July and going to take out new policy now. No preexisting conditions. Day to day not important. Dublin Based. Private hospital cover wanted and possibly ophthalmic ( with excess). Would Enhanced care 150 be a good alternative with VHI given increased prices with Laya? She would prefer Laya or VHI.
I appreciate you taking the effort to help all of us!

    Hi Ruddy

Looking to move up from PMI 07 10 to something around the €2k/€2.25k mark.

What do you think of PMI 51 10 (I'm Dublin based)? Also looked at PMI 24 10.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

That's a well priced plan. One item to flag is that it has a 40% shortfall for Specified orthopaedic and Ophthalmic Procedures. So if thats important might not be the best plan for her.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

The main thing i don't like about 51 10 is the fact you pay €50 per night excess in a Private room in a Private hospital. This could add up with a long stay. VHI are generally not good at this price point if you are looking for a private room plan with a fixed excess (Laya & ILH have better options). PMI 24 10 is the Private room plan with VHI that I regularly recommend as this doesnt have the nightly excess for a private room.

Hi Ruddy, thanks for everything here, a brilliant resource.

Family of 6 all currently on Irish Life Horizon 3, looking now to trim the costs but keep similar cover.

Looking at Health Action 5 for the 2 adults (in our fifties), and then maybe Health Action 3 for the young adult and the 3 younger kids.

These look good to me, but don’t think they are covered on the Irish Life current discounts.

Anything else we could be looking at?prioritising hospital choices (just in case) and consultants fees.

    Hi Ruddy.

I'm currently on Company Plan Extra Level 2 with vhi. Renewal up on 1st March.

I'm single, in late 50s. No special treatments. Orthopedic or otherwise.

Plan premium going to 2825 euro this year..

    Any suggestions..

No discounts on Health Actions but well priced very good plans. One flag on the health actions is there poor minor injury cover if you are not close to one of to one of the minor injury clinics id flag this. But health action has great screening/wellbeing cash backs that might be attractive. You could look at Health Action 4 if you just want to keep your private room coverage. If you where open to going to Semi Private room health guide 2 is attractively priced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

Health Guide 3 would deliver very big savings and similar cover for €1,971. But if you want to stay with VHI I would be looking at PMI 48 10 or PMI 24 10 (€2,264). My preference would be PMI 24 10 if staying with VHI. See below comparison.

Hi Ruddy, hope it is ok to ask again. I find it impossible to find the information using the HIA comparison tool. We are 2 adults, 2 young adults -and Dublin-based,on PMI 1011 (renewal this weekend coming). Trying to enquire if you know of a better value policy that offers similar semi-private accommodation in a private hospital, with good day to day expenses. I would appreciate your insight. Thank you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

10 11 is good value, nothing cheaper with that kind of cover with VHI. Flags with that plan are more generally the Waterford and Kilkenny exclusion and no flat excess cover in 360 minor injury clinic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,026 ✭✭✭happyoutscan

Hi Ruddy, your advice seems great!

May I ask, ours not due for renewal so probably too early to ask for your advice?

Family of 4 (I'm with VHI 30 years or so) on Enhanced Care 250 (cover in semiprivate room with excess) at €2870.

I had them strip it to the bones to get that price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

yes with VHI you can’t make any changes until renewal but that’s an ok value plan currently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,210 ✭✭✭Escapees

I can't help but wonder how sustainable this thread is... The fundamental issue is that the HIA comparison tool is, and has always been, hardly fit for purpose. I've been in touch with them over the years to highlight many issues with it, but they the improvements have been very slow coming. Funnily, they've actually emailed me an excel spreadsheet previously with all the raw plan info listed, which was brilliant and much easier to work with than their tool at the time!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 927 ✭✭✭littlefeet

We change our plan with the VHI which means we sort of avoided the price increases and still remained on a mid range plan. I looked in to this very carefully. The thing I have noticed is the Bon secures hospitals seem to be in a game of chicken with the VHI and maybe other insurances as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

yes VHI can exclude certain hospitals, lots of there newer plans have exclusions. Most common Waterford and Sligo but also cork.

Laya also exclude certain southern hospitals. Generally most Irish life or level plans don’t have these.

Looking for a Health Plan fora 76 year old male, VHI probably preferred but open to any other suggestions, online payment would be a bonus, I have been searching most of the Health Firms websites but to be honest I am totally confused, so if anyone has experience of this age group I would gladly take advice.

    TIA

Is there a plan in place currently? If not maybe very expensive to put in place with combination of loading plus you need to consider 5 year waiting period for pre existing conditions.

Hi Ruddy. Great contributor to all here. Currently on Enhanced Care 350 and considering a change for 2 middle aged adults with no major health issues but a possibility for cataract surgery soon.

I was considering LHC plan b 300 but there are 2 different excesses for Opthalmic procedures which is confusing. The rest looks pretty good. Alternatively Access Health with Laya was another I was considering. Access to semi-private in a private hospital and consultant cover is desirable.

Could i ask your thoughts please? Thank you.
