Picking avocados.

    Any tips for picking good ones in the shops?

    I have picked rock hard ones in the past, telling myself that they will ripen in due course

    Some do but some never ripen.

    Again ,if you choose one that is just slightly soft I don't think that is a guarantee it will be good (although it will surely be edible and is bound to ripen,I would say)

    Are there any tips to knowing whether an avocado will be particularly good or less so?

    I gave up, too much faffing, I buy the smashed avocado pot in aldi, I can just open it and use it whenever I need it and it's always pretty good.

    Mightn't be the answer you're looking for, but it works best for me.

    I was told once by someone who lives in a country that grows avocado's that when you buy one in shops, remove the small woody bit/disc (where it would hang from the tree) and this speeds up ripening. And if kept in fridge they won't get soft at all.

    Different topic, but dont mention buying mangoes!!!

    You’ve touched on it a bit in your post but the trick with avocados is to place your thumb and index finger over the more narrow end and gently press (don’t maul the things). If there is a slight bit of “give” that’s indicative the avocado is ripe or nearly there.

    Another is to press against the woody stalk at the top of the fruit - if that falls away or is easily moved with little force the avocado is ripe

    And put them in a paper bag with bananas if they still need a bit of help ripening.

    if your avocado is too hard, peel it, cut it into chunks, bit of salt, pepper and lemon juice then pulverise it with a stick blender.

    I find it's easy enough to tell when they're not ripe or too ripe, but it's when you're waiting in-between and forget to check that's the killer! I will rarely now buy avocados that are not yet ripe (even the ones described as supposedly ripe and ready to eat!) - it means you can't use them when you might need them etc. Instead I buy the reduced to clear ones which feel soft and always find that they are perfect no matter how squishy. I never find mouldy or rotten bits inside that I would tend to find in ones that I used to ripen at home and end up leaving too long before using.

    Look for Hass avocados with knobbly skin. There are other varieties that tend to be a bit more watery and not so creamy. I prefer the larger ones rather than the net of small ones. Don't worry if they are rock hard unless you want to use one immediately.

    To ripen a hard avocado just leave it out on the counter. It can take 4-5 days to soften if it is very hard but it will soften. Once it's ripe you can leave it back in the fridge which will slow down any further ripening.

    If you use a part of an avocado, leave the stone in the remaining part and wrap a bit of cling film around it and it should be ok for a few more days. Even if a part of the inside looks brown there is usually some nice fruit left once you cut away the discoloured part.

    Avocadoes are the most infuriating of fruits.
    Are they ripe? Or are they not?


    Christ, even a banana will give you obvious signals.

    If only we had a metaphor :/

    I’ve discovered that leaving them in direct sunlight speeds up the ripening, as a fridge slows it down. Using both means I can have avocados almost every day.
