    Were you in contract?

don’t mean to be pedantic but just want to see beat way to do this. (Moving to the cheaper day/night meter rate with flogas)
I am currently on BWG flogas deal and in a contract until Sept 2026.

I want to try and avoid the 50 euro etc for breaking the contract.

But my thinking is that I am already a Flogas customer and staying with them.

Not sure whether to sign up as “new” or “existing” or whether I have to change bank accounts, use different name etc.

I just don’t want to mess it up and potentially get penalised.

As someone who is thinking of switching, do you need to do it and allow a certain number of days before your existing contract ends?

Mine is up on 12th Feb, and I assume you cant leave it until 11th Feb to switch?

Also, is it wise to use the likes of Switcher or Bonkers to do the switch, or just handle it yourself?

13th. Check everywhere for deals. Upload usage to Kilowatt.ie, Energypal.ie Then check Bonkers & Switcher, as sometimes they have exclusive cashback offer. Then check the suppliers websites. Then go on Boards and ask again

I was on exactly the same plan as you. I tried ringing them to see would they switch me to the cheaper 24hr plan but she wouldn't do it even though they did it for me before. Anyway I gave up on that avenue and signed up to the new plan via the website. I used a different email address and my Revolut IBAN and everything went through perfectly without penalty, I've received my final BWG bill.

I’m thinking you’re definitely liable for the €50 break fee as you’re still in contract for a specific plan. If you’re lucky they might not hit you for it given you’re not going to a competitor. Maybe you’d save the €50 anyway between here and Sept 2026 ? Is the new plan “fixed” like the BWG plan ?

I switched fixed plan to fixed plan with flogas last year in contact and they didn't charge the breakage fee. They won't do it over the phone but once the application is gone in online they seem to process it.

Methinks we may have discovered a loophole... The penalty for leaving a contract early usually does not apply if you leave the property (e.g. if renting or selling up). In this case, it might appear to the provider that a new customer took on the property, implying the previous one left as opposed to switched to another provider (in which case Flogas would have been notified by the new provider).

true. Wonder what is best way. New customer. Or existing. Or could I get stung with the 50 either way.

I’m guessing existing customer looking to just move plans might be your best bet to dodge the break fee. How much cheaper is it than BWG plan ? (You might make back the €50 anyway over a few bills)

I don't see why a supplier would want to punish you for signing a new contract with them. For example I'm with 3 mobile and they sent me an upgrade offer 3 months before my contract was up. They are usually just happy to keep you regardless of what contract you sign

not really, none of them - elec, broadband, tv - want to give you the same offer to stay as their new customer offers.

God there's a lot of waffle going on about changing plans within Flogas, I've clearly outlined the steps I took which ended with a successful move.

I find with most of them once you actually start the switching process they'll come running back to you with a decent offer to sign back up

I had engeria offer to pay the early contract cancellation fee if I left my current supplier and signed with them but I reckon flogas are the best around for me at the moment.

Its not a loophole, the penalty still applies if you sell your home. Some may waive it but to most they wouldn't see you've left home, just a new contract

Flogas dont have to let you switch, they can charge you, they just don't. We saw people blocked from switching in 2024 on the BWG deal. Seems to work now tho

Are you sure? I rang a few of the providers a few years back to suss this sort of scenario and was told that the contract break penalty fee would not apply.

As an example, say a tenant of more than 1 year switches provider, but a month or two later receives notice that their landlord intends to sell up. The tenant could not have foreseen this scenario and I can't see any provider chasing them for the contract break fee. In any case, I'm fairly certain they simply don't.

    Yes.

The second scenario arises often enough on reddit. Its not the suppliers issue, you signed a 12 month contract and there's no clause that allows you to break that for free. Its no different than your internet (which Virgin are known to strictly enforce as an example).

Some suppliers will waive it considering the circumstances but you've no right to it. Hence, there is no loophole. Whats happening here is CoBo55 is resigning with the same supplier and they waive the contract break fee knowingly or unknowingly.

Seems to be a loophole of some sort if a supplier waives the contract break fee unknowingly!

CoBo55 signed up again with FloGas. He didn't say he was moving house. It only currently works with FloGas to switch from one plan to another online with FloGas.

If you want to call it a loophole, sure. I disagree.

I don't think it's a loophole either, more an accidental or deliberate waving of the fee.

Speaking of breakage fees, I left energia after they darted me with a 12% rise 6 weeks into my contract, the final bill included the anticipated €50 fee I rang them and they waived it. Always worth a call to your provider.

Uploaded my data from ESB Networks into EnergyPal, and its saying FloGas is cheapest option.

Iirc Bonkers didnt have FloGas anywhere near the top.

Will check out Switcher and Bonkers again. Is there any reason to actually look at each providers individual websites? Would they show you anything Bonkers or Switcher won't?

But I am worried about this line which makes it sound like it'll take me off my preferred Day/Night plan.

Will switching to any other provider take me off the D/N rate meter?

May or may not be related but Bonkers and Switcher don't use my personal night-rate percentage when showing me search results which include peak times. I input my night-rate percentage as 20%, but they both default to around 36/37% (national average) when showing me day/peak/night results.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,064 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

My night rate is approx 58%, so I want to keep D/N tariff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,890 ✭✭✭Gooser14

You can upload your esbnetworks data file to bonkers just like energypal. I believe bonkers require at least 12 months of data.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,002 ✭✭✭bren2001

switching to this activates your smart meter. This means FloGas will have access to your 30 minute data as opposed to receiving an update once a month. You can never switch back.

The plan you're looking to switch to is Smart Day/Night. There is usually a "peak" rate between 5-7 but not on this plan.

You should go with the cheapest overall deal, smart or no. We'll all be smart anyway
