Bus Driver sacked for confronting thief

Slightly off topic but as a young lad, I went on a bus from Ennis to Galway with the old lady and siblings and on the way, the bus pulled over outside a pub, possibly Crusheen or Gort, and both Driver and Conductor went in and left all passengers on it. They came out 20/30 minutes later and the conductor had a bag of tayto for all of us. Would have been 72/73 or so. Hilarious when you think about it now.

It reminds me of heading to school games or underage games years ago and the only bus driver in town would bring us to all the games and go for his 4 or 5 pints while the game was on, innocent times in fairness

Back in the late 60's/early 70's as well. The Galway-Clifden bus which only ran twice a week that time used to stop for half an hour at Maam Cross while everyone, including the driver, popped into Peacock's for a couple of quick pints.

Removing the emotion (understandable emotion) it’s a safety critical job. A bus in the wrong hands could do untold damage to the public. Hard one to call as there’s a human side to it but a bus can’t be left like that.

Lots of buses are sitting there empty, doors unlocked and push button starters ready to be taken at any time. So why the crying about this particular bus being some huge hijack risk just because the driver got off for a few minutes?

Bue Eireann buses on the longer routes very frequently stop for 10/15 mins at a filling station and the driver will go to the toilet or something, why aren't those buses full of passengers being lifted by the roving bands of junkies?

Crying about the safety of the remaining passengers is just cowardly bullshit.

From the article, Metroline alleged that the driver "failed to protect passengers by leaving the bus unattended with the engine running." If we disregard the first point for a second, surely you can see the danger in leaving the engine RUNNING in a presumably relatively busy area in London.

The driver did what any decent person would do and shouldn't have been sacked.

I heard the interview with the driver, he said no one could have accessed the bus while he was chasing the thief as he had the two items needed to open the doors so there was no risk to the passengers.

Thats just your ignorance. Again, a huge amount of buses are just sitting there with a button to open the doors and a button to start the engine, so the only difference between them and this bus was whether the button had been pressed or not. So why exactly does the engine running make a difference?

People should stop pretending that this is anything to do with passenger safety, those passengers were in no danger whatsoever. Its silly to claim otherwise.
