Really enjoying the beginning's of the extra strength in the sun Cluedo and the brightness extending well past 17.00 now and the mornings just getting that bit brighter too. Love that sense of leaning towards the Spring and Summer and slowly emerging out of the dark of winter. Getting a few more walks in too.

Snow on the highest peaks on the Slieve Mish mountain range today even with it getting up to 9.6C and feeling relatively mild in the afternoon but I had a warm cardigan on today so probably felt that bit warmer, looks like around the same temperature tomorrow so will need lighter clothes, hate being over warm but look forward to the warmer weather, very sensitive to heat variations 😁, will need to go stealthily around the office back at base tomorrow turning down the heat bit by bit, fierce competition with the women, might even open the windows too…but that might be pushing it a bit too far 😅

Cloudy with intermittent rain so far in north Longford. 6c, I'm expecting some showers going on the met.ie app. It won't be anything as good as yesterday.

Lovely day yesterday. Managed to do some pruning in the garden. Cloud this morning. 5C. I'd imagine we will have showers. Leitrim.

Awful seeing that flooding in the east of the country. The damage it causes is dreadful.

Crazy wind this morning in Dublin, please go away

Hoping the rain later today and tonight doesn't need to renewed flooding, people have suffered enough.

cold and dry SE wind too, temperatures around normal but you wouldn’t think so in the wind. you can feel that we are slowly but surely coming under a continental influence.

Looking at temperatures this morning I see -14 in Helsinki, -10 approaching Stockholm as cold air sinks south and -22 in St Petersburg. Remember these places have struggled to get above freezing in recent winters with big Iberia/Euro anticyclones keeping them in Atlantic westerlies. An ‘interesting’ old fashioned February coming up hopefully.

Last winter was very cold, by recent standards, in Scandinavia, and the winter before too if i remember.

It's a real pity Ireland hasn't been able to tap into this cold for three years running…

Awfully windy this morning but some stunning light and waves at High Rock between Malahide and Portmarnock before the cloud came.

I don’t mind a bit of snow but I’m not sure my wallet would appreciate an extended period of cold!!

For any record keepers such as yourself sryan, where does January 2026 rank in terms of our wettest months on record? It must be up there, surely?

Northern Scandinavia was cold last winter but cold south of 60N has been rare in recent years.

Blustery and on/off rain in my part of D14. River levels aren't looking good around the Dodder, still quite volatile, and since the river is quick rise/quick fall, it doesn't help. Some of my neighbours have started preparing incase it goes south again, WeatherEire's post on twitter shows another dumping of 30-35MM for the Rathfarnham area of SCD tonight for those local to me.

Below are photos taken today depicting preperations, Tuesday's fiasco, the current dodder river level, and the total accumulated precipitaiton map posted by WeatherEire earlier on Twitter/X

What a January it's been so far!

This is the wettest January I have ever experience since I was born in the 1970s. I've never seen such scale of winter misery in all my life.

To get outside I have to walk the long way around the house because the side exit to my driveway is still waterlogged and full of mud. Garden is an absolute swamp and grass is showing signs of growing already and it could be weeks before I'll be able to get near cutting the grass it's in such a state.

But compared to other people I have dodged a bullet, there are homes in need of major expensive repair by flooding and countless cars that got half submerged in floods. I'm sure in some cases people have to move out of their homes for a while.

There'll also be an excuse for Insurance Companies to bump up the cost of our policies.

lashing rain and gales here in Meath, another atrocious evening and plenty more rain to come overnight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,557 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

It's really depressing. At least the days are getting brighter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,869 ✭✭✭pureza

About to have supper here in Arklow and the windows look like the house is going through a car wash again

    Vey wet

Doesn’t bode well for the Slaney or Avoca rivers given what must be coming down now and is forecast in the coming week on the Wicklow mountains

Absolutely appalling weather again this evening. Drenched again on way home from work and yet another hot shower and heating on full blast. When will it stop?! This really is concerning for the east and south with more rain to come. Lots more flooding inevitable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,404 ✭✭✭Sammy2012

Has the rain been coming from a different direction than usual? The back of our house which faces East seems to be in firing line these last few weeks where as its usually the front of the house that takes a battering. This is facing westerly.

It's the first evening I've really noticed that. Was driving home at 5.15pm and it was still fairly bright in spite of the rain.

Proper rain only really got going in last hour or so in Greystones. 3mm so far.

Up to 187mm for the month so far - expect that to exceed 200mm by Saturday.

Absolutely lashing in SCD, if it's this bad here I bet the Wicklow Mts are much worse lol. I went out to investigate the level of the Dodder and it's around the same height it was at 10PM on Monday night (before the flooding)… big community sandbag drive has been occuring here in my estate so we can combat the next river coming our way (lol).

Photo of the Dodder this evening + the current level (it's a tick below 10PM on Monday)
Value difference of 0.076 and another 4~ hours of heavy rain left.

It's been hard to notice much of a difference here really, still have the lights by 3pm most days I'm working at home with how dark it gets with the rain. Awful evening again as mentioned, very little exercise this month
