Very similar MSLP anomaly across Europe for 16th-25th January 2026 versus the second half of January 2014. It has felt distinctly winter 2013-14 esque to me of late though I remember that featuring a lot more sunshine inbetween fronts whereas 2026 has been just very very poor all around.

Temperature wise especially lately has also felt like winter 2013/14. I could be wrong but I think winter 2013/14 came up as one of the possible analoges for this winter.

2026 seems to have jumped to 118.8mm with the extra showers since I posted that so it will definitely be the wettest January since 1948 in Dublin now, especially with more rain Thursday into Friday. 2026 off to a stellar start.

Yep 2013-14 featured heavily in analogs though I don't rate them. December 2013 was quite mild but January and February 2014 were unremarkable in the temperature department. Rain on the other hand… I think February 2014 is one of the most cyclonic months on record with AVERAGE monthly pressure as low as 985mb in the north. December 2015 for comparison which was historically wet too and mild had average pressure more typical of around 1005mb. Shows how direct the deep lows were in 2013-14 on a southerly track whereas in Dec 2015 they were further northwestward allowing air directly from the Canaries.

I don't know exact numbers for January 2026 but according to Reading Brugge site which has MSLP anomalies for synoptic stations and widespread Irish stations reporting MSLP anomalies < -10mb.

If anyone has forgotten how good our weather can be, here’s Clew Bay from April 9th 2025, taken from a top Croagh Patrick

Did not see a cloud all day in 20c weather and very low humidity. Perfect

Yes, sadly we had a big shower around 08:45, just when I thought I was finally going to get one cycle into work without rain.

Best day in a week here so far.

SE winds and rain Thursday night and Friday morning, hopefully no repeat of the floods again.

Blue Skies and sun this morning, been a long time since I seen that, perhaps since the northerly start of January.

Raining on and off in South Wicklow. Got out for a half walk in the woods, badly flooded.

Northern blocking has brought severe cold and snow to much of the northern hemisphere, well all except for one small republic.

UK isn't doing much better but they did well early January, far better than we did.

    "one small republic." 🥹

    No snow .

Raining constantly and cutting wind .

yep we pretty much got handed the wooden spoon this winter with the past 2 to 3 weeks a kick to the teeth to add insult to injury. This winter scores a big fat 0 for me.

There is going to have to be a huge shift in the model output within the next week for this score to improve if there is any saving winter in February but the SSW ship is about to sail so I think if that happens it has sailed into March by the time any affects reach us.

There is some nice model output for the second week of February, but with every easterly a failure so far how am I meant to take the charts seriously this far out.

If it makes people feel ok , I will be expecting some rain over the next week for a couple of days and certainly clouds .Along with highs of 21 degrees sunshine , and lows of 16 .

Will have to bring a rain jacket and a fleecy or two I suppose 😊

Does the best Christmas holiday weather for the last 15 years not count for anything in your score? They are the 2 weeks that people are actually off during winter and can spend loads of time outdoors with family and friends. It was bone dry and often sunny. I thought it was absolutely perfect. It was like 7 weekends of perfect winter weather combined. Loads of frosts and starry nights (and an unbelievable aurora last week). You would prefer a mild wet Christmas fortnight? Dunsany got 3mm of rain for the first 7 days of January too. All available sunshine totals were above their LTA in December. Eaten bread is soon forgotten methinks.

It would have been perfect if it snowed heavily on Christmas Eve, Cluedo, but it was good nonetheless.

For me at least I can't say I'm too bothered about sunny weather over Christmas, it's the darkest few weeks of the year either way and for me has never been about getting out and about.. the complete opposite in fact, it's a week to laze about the house, watch a few films, visit friends, go to the pub etc. It was a lovely spell of weather obviously, just its probably my single least active week all year so the weather barely registers in my head when ranking the winter

In the West, we don’t wait for good weather to come, we make the best of what’s there. Granted this week has been poor, Sunday and Wednesday were nice. Most days there’s a gap or a chance.

I am a bit odd in that I don't watch much TV and go a bit stir crazy indoors. I do like going to the pub though. I was averaging well over 20k steps a day over Christmas. Some days were 30k steps (golf days). I have very good outdoor gear and 2 rechargeable Petzl head torches so there is no stopping me day or night. That said it was the first Christmas in probably 25 years that I did not climb a mountain. I was waiting for snow.

There were so many people out walking, running and cycling - it was like Lockdown!

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

The 2 week Christmas period was a very welcome relief from the misery of weeks/months of Atlantic deluges beforehand and gave the ground a chance to dry out somewhat but for me it was pleasant and welcome but not a benchmark for securing a decentish winter. Little did we know that the 2 week dry spell would be followed by conditions that made the pre Christmas deluges look light in comparison and as well all know quite a few places have had serious flooding over the past few days.

There's still a chance that February could deliver something but we need plenty of straws that haven't been snaped in half already. IF we do somehow get another cold spell before end of February and it does happen to deliver one day of widespread snow then the score will definitely change.

Today was a super day in my area. We had a family funeral, distant cousin, and it was a comfort in the graveyard. It felt chilly a bit I suppose but I stood around talking to relatives I hadn't seen in a while and sat in a beer garden of a local hotel for a couple of hours catching up with some relatives. It reached 9c in the afternoon. It was bright outside here until after 5:30. Apart from a couple of swollen streams and a local lake looking larger than usual, no real lasting impact here in North Longford from yesterday.

Felt mild and pleasant today. With the lack of clouds I really noticed the jump in daylight.

Fair enough but Dunsany was sunnier than usual in December and only got 75% of it's LTA in rainfall during December. So if next Christmas is wet, you will need to go into the minus figures. The flooding would have been much much worse if the river levels had stayed above median flood levels during Christmas and early January. I was so relieved we got that extended dry period because it was trending upwards before that. You'll have to get used to the Atlantic some time, it ain't going anywhere 😉 Feb 2025 was lovely, I'd take that again. Spent most of it cleaning up after the big storm.

It was still bright at 5:40 when out for a walk. I love to see the light returning.
