Yeah, the old groups had been rubbish for years, this new system at least throws up more interesting matchups, and I like the one-off games rather than home/away. I'd have preferred if they stuck to 6 games with this system, all done before christmas, but with the increased money the clubs were demanding the extra revenue had to come from somewhere.

and I still maintain (although probably in minority) that top 2 should get a bye to quarters and have a real tangible benefit (although 2nd leg at home is decent) and also mean only 20 qualify so adds a bit more jeopardy.

More teams and more matches are the concessions they were forced to make to quell the Super League stuff.

The format change at least mitigates against the extra teams, by having a proper array of competition for each team (Liverpool playing Atleti, Real Madrid, and Inter for instance, rather than ending up with the extra teams leading to bloated groups full of no-hopers if it was the old system).

Virgin Media 2 doing a great job of showing all the goals as they happen. And explaining league positions.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Watching the Newcastle game with my Geordie mates. The refereeing is possibly the worst I've ever seen. Free kicks and a penalty for nothing. Yellow cards for nothing too. And I'm saying that as a Man United fan..

Ironically they missed the great Napoli equaliser on their televised game when showing goal highlights elsewhere Vergara Showing great feet to spin and score. Other goal that was a peach was Dragomir for Pafos v Prague screamer.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

At one stage there PSV and Marseille, on 9pts, were in the next round.

As it stands 10pts is enough to get through but fúck me Marseille potentially losing 5 out of 8 games and not getting eliminated and still in the competition in February is why I absolutely hate this format

If Bodo Glimt can stay ahead against Atleti they will finish in 23rd and qualify for the knockouts.

Another week another time added on bizarreness

In the 2nd half of Liverpool v Qarabag there was 5 separate substitution breaks, 4 goals, a VAR offside check, ball getting put out of play for a Qarabag head injury....

....2mins added on and ref blows bang on 92mins despite the VAR check going over 30secs into the added time

They're not even trying to hide it anymore

Sporting Lisbon with a last minute winner to knock Real Madrid down into the play off section.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,734 ✭✭✭✭8-10

    And Marseille do it!

A heroic 3-0 defeat, their 5th loss out of 8 games, and they qualify for the next round

Bodo/Glimt, with 1 win in the 7 games up to tonight join them on 9pts but their -1 goal difference is superior to Marseille's -3 so they finish higher

Qarabag get spanked by the worst Liverpool team in decades 6-0 to qualify with a -8 goal difference

5 other clubs with negative goal difference avoid elimination also

    Utter ****

Benfica need another goal here, are playing against 10 men and are taking an awful long time to get the game going again.

They just hoofed it out of play, without committing lads up front. Clowns.

    Holy moly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,681 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Lol that is unbelievable. Do they get each other again in the playoff now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,734 ✭✭✭✭8-10

I spoke too soon. Keeper scores, Marseille out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,367 ✭✭✭Glico Man

Sensational scenes in Benfica, keeper scores to send them through to the knockouts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,381 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

    Wow Benfica!

    Planned to perfection eh!

Benfica keeper last minute goal v Real Madrid - through to last 24 on goal difference. 24th place. I enjoyed all that great format. Also Real out of top 8 need a play off round now.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

    It's a draw

Real Madrid or Inter will play Bodo/Glimt or Benfica

Go on Benfica, that was a mad finish!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,734 ✭✭✭✭8-10

My overall point stands, Benfica lost 5 of 8 games and pip Marseille

But the terrible comment can remain as proof of my stupidity in assuming Mourinho wouldn't pull that out

For all the money being spent at Madrid, they really are bang average this season.

Don't know what's up with them.
