Apple TV / Eir TV is VERY responsive. Have compared it side by side with Virgin Streaming and also Sky Q and it's way faster. Channel changes are basically instant. I think you're just spoiled with better tech in that case - the company that's doing Eir TV is Zattoo tv and they're just slick cloud tech https://thetvplatform.zattoo.com being used by a few of the Iliad companies, and the Apple hardware is way higher spec anything you'll get in a cable company / sat company puck. Zattoo was actually used by Sky's former subsidiary in Germany too.

I suspect you're just a bit spoiled by good tech.

Mine is responsive but I regularly get issues where it craps out and says something along the lines of fault loading program.

I have eir tv and yes its super fast as regards channel changing etc, but I'm just wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that eir tv has only a fraction of the channels that Sky Stream and Virgin Stream have ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 792 ✭✭✭PixelCrafter

Wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference. That platform handles >300 channels on Salt TV, Eir's sister company in Switzerland and flies along too. It's just better tech. Swiss cable/IPTV is odd as it carries hundreds of overspill channels from multiple countries, without paying royalties, - hence the huge range.

Both of us must have received a faulty one, lol.

Yes, both of mine are laggy as flip and that's on wifi or wired internet.
It probably doesn't help though, that family members want the channel to change in a snap, like the old SKY+HD systems.
They don't wait long enough, so end up on a non-sub channel or a pin protected channel and then I have to reset it.

why would you have to reset it. Just press back or home no?

First world problems moaning that a TV station doesn't change the instant a button is pressed.

I just knew someone would come out with a helpful reply like this. 🙄 🙄
Not that it makes any difference, but I don't mean reset as in factory reset.

If you had any experience of these awful pucks, it's not as simple as pressing back or home.

I have multiple pucks, and never once had to reset any of them.

It's the way they are, we've two at the moment and they're terribly laggy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,520 ✭✭✭✭Hurrache

It's not first world problems when Sky's previous tech was instant and as highlighted Sky's competitors also using streaming tech is also more responsive.

The boxes seem underpowered, presumably to keep costs down.

This is the major plus point of Eir TV - use your own Apple TV.

lol of course it's first world problems. Arcade Fire's song was right......Everything now, I want it, everything now, I need it.

The pucks are class. The slight delay is fine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,520 ✭✭✭✭Hurrache

You're missing the obvious point, probably purposely, Sky Stream is an inferior product to their previous products and competitors products.

I think you're the only person who claims they're class when it's been shown to you they're simply not.

Even pirated streaming apps and platforms are quicker than Stream.

And you're missing the obvious point that 99% of people wouldnt and don't give a damn.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,520 ✭✭✭✭Hurrache

I didn't miss that point because you never actually made it.

Sky are making large losses at the moment so there's enough people out there that do care and aren't flocking to the platform despite heavy discounts.

I'll take your word they’re making losses. I'd wager it has very little to do with the speed of the box. Anyway, I love the pucks, and so do the rest of the family.

The Sky puck is after being sent back anyway and I'm delighted to be back to my eir Apple TV+NOWtv. The Sky remote was way nicer though! 🤣

Sky is making large profits, but not sure how that's relevant.

The Stream puck is not as good as Sky Q, of course it's not, but it's a different product and apart from the odd glitch I find it very reliable.

You could not pay me enough to go back to Eir TV

find the puck very erratic, especially if you flick up a few channels, takes ages to catch up then usually craps out and shows the wrong channel. We had an issue the past week where a deliveroo ad wouldn’t play just pause in screen with audio going funny in background. Audio drifts out of sync quite a bit. All sky forums seem to show most people have similar issues. Certainly they seemed to have cheaped out massively.

Yeah Eir TV was dreadful. And their customer service at the time has put me off them for life.

Was flicking through the Sky Stream Ireland website and listed in the available apps were ITVx and STV, I presume that's an error and also listed is the RTE Player, but no sign of Virgin Play or TG4 player ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,450 ✭✭✭NotShero

Yeah that's a mistake, the website often lists things that are meant for the UK. The native RTE Player app is there but for Virgin and TG4 there is a catch up section within the the Sky UI and you are not brought to a separate app. The catch up section can sometimes be missing shows that would be available through the native apps however, but most things should be there.

For the gazillionth time, we turned on both pucks this morning and live tv is gone AGAIN.
One is wifi, one is wired.

what do you mean live TV is gone. Surely that's your internet if the thing isn't working

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 289 ✭✭AJB39

It’s the opposite for Virgin Media TV customers, we get the native Virgin Media Play and TG4 Player apps but we have to access RTÉ Player content via the Virgin UI.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭maik3n

No, the apps and players (like channel4) are working fine but the live tv channels system is not available.
I can go on google, browse youtube, visit boards.ie fine on my laptop so it's not the internet connection.

It is the stupid pucks again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,237 ✭✭✭hold my beer

Ive never had that issue and I've had them over 3 years. I'd be asking for a new one if it happened more than once.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,071 ✭✭✭✭lertsnim

It's very rare that I'll see an error to say my programme is loading but I find Sky Stream very reliable for live and catch up. Channels don't change instantly but the second it takes is acceptable and I cannot fault the picture or sound quality.

I have 2 pucks. Not happy with them. Had SkyQ and Eirtv on AppleTV previously.

Sky stream is very laggy, especially when watching any UHD content.
