€5,600 to retrofit windows and doors

Anyone know more about this grant, I just orderd new doors that won't be here for 5/6 weeks, I didn't go near seai as it had to be part of a deep retrofit.

    From today's Irish Times,

Homeowners will be offered grants of up to €5,600 to retrofit windows and doors as part of a State scheme to encourage the wider installation of heat pumps in Irish homes.

The fixed-amount windows-and-doors grant is expected to be announced by Minister for Energy Darragh O’Brien after Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting. It is anticipated that the grant will then be made available from March 3rd.

Grants for windows and doors were previously only available for homes undergoing deep retrofits, which cost tens of thousands of euro.

However, in a significant policy change, grants will be offered under the Better Energy Homes Scheme for houses and apartments where the fabric of the building is deemed suitable for the installation of a heat pump. Improving the energy efficiency of doors and windows helps to minimise heat loss and allows a heat pump to operate at lower temperatures.

Seems like more details will be known tomorrow. I rang SEAI this morning and they had no details to share yet. I was trying to get clarification on the criteria to qualify, as it seems the building fabric must be at a certain level already. Maybe there will be a cutoff point based on the current BER of the property or something along those lines.

if it's anything like previous implementation, you will require a full technical report which will cost best part of a grand , then will have to implement anything in that report to get the grant.

there was similar a few years ago to get solar grant..this meant you had to do quite a few other expensive upgrades to qualify. it killed solar implementation for a few years and they dumped the requirement within a couple of years

My Ber isn’t great so should fall under it regardless, can’t see any list of approved door or window installer on the seai website so they probably need to start accepting submissions from installers, would be great if you could just submit the invoice.

I went with a letterbox which will probably be a no, no, as they’re against building regulations I think.

AFAIK this is only for semi D houses

Don’t doubt you, the article doesn’t mention that nugget though, it would be a silly restriction, the worse the doors the more the detached are burning oil.

“Grants of up to €4,000 will be provided for upgrading windows on detached houses, €3,000 for semidetached and end-of-terrace homes, €1,800 for mid-terrace houses and €1,500 for apartments and duplexes. There will also be grants of €800 per door, up to a maximum of two doors”

I think the OSS all work with specific window providers. This might be the starting point if they plan on rolling this out by beginning of March. Hard to know

Are you referring to the heatpump technical assessment?

Thanks for that, the first take was in the indo, enough said

Literally ordered new windows two weeks ago. Absolutely kicking myself now.

    That’s incorrect.
solar grant was extremely straight forward.

The cynic in me is thinking that if you hadn’t ordered them and waited for the grant, the prices might magically rise to absorb most of the €5,600 anyway, if you know what I mean. Im wondering do these schemes often inflate the market as much as they help the customer!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 336 ✭✭gaming_needs90

Ah, probably. Also it probably would need to go through a specific contractor, not my own, so there would be extra margin added ultimately reducing any sort of saving.

This just appeared on the SEAI website still scheme going live on March 2nd, still very sparse info thou

From what I can see from Irish Independent, the max window grant for a semi-detached is €3,000, and doors are €800 each (max two, so €1,600 total). That gives a combined maximum of €5,600 if you’re doing both windows and doors, not to be sniffed at!

One thing I’m trying to clarify is whether “windows” also includes velux skylights?

SEAI’s public info just says “windows (complete upgrade)” and doesn’t say whether rooflights are included or excluded.

It’s going to come with a catch once officially announced. Whether that’s requiring a certain BER rating or mandating that homes are suited and to fitted with a heat pump within a set time frame. Companies associated with the SEAI will also likely raise their prices in response to the grant.

I see this will be through registered contractors into seai. Not exactly finalised, as the below is on the site.

    ''

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Windows and Doors Contractor on the SEAI Better Energy Homes Scheme.  We are currently upgrading our systems to accept registrations from early February, which will allow adequate time for onboarding eligible contractors before the grant scheme opens to the public. This page will be updated as soon as requirements have been finalised

    ''

In our case we reduced our costs significantly by removing our current windows and preparing cavities, so the quote we got was for a new build. I dont think we would have saved much even if we got this grant as I imagine any contractor would want to do that work.

Not necessary. If the company you used end up being incompetent and don't file the right paperwork, you can't get any grant.

Interesting - we were considering new windows - will keep an eye on this.

You might need to get your calculator out again as those figures don't add up.

That's a separate issue. The post I quoted stated a full technical report required costing €1000.

    https://www.seai.ie/grants/home-energy-grants/individual-grants/attic-insulation

And a higher fixed-amount grant for attic insulation will be introduced for homeowners who are on qualifying welfare payments – aligned with Warmer Home Scheme eligibility requirements.

And the new Windows and Doors grant is here..
    https://www.seai.ie/grants/home-energy-grants/individual-grants/windows-and-doors

    Grant values

    Windows

    • Apartment: €1,500
    • Mid-Terrace: €1,800
    • Semi-Detached //End of Terrace: €3,000
    • Detached: €4,000

    External Doors

€800 per door (max of 2 doors)

For my job our grants should increase from €16,250 to €28,350

    • New windows must have a U-value ≤ 1.4 W/m2K
    • After the upgrade, your home must achieve a ‘Good’ or ‘Very Good’ Heat Loss Indicator (HLI of 2.3 W/ m2K or lower) on the BER.
    • Surprised my C3 detached house is just a smidge over this as is, so with all new windows and doors it should be easily met.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,105 ✭✭✭✭ted1

    whats the logic with

"First Time Buyers will be able to avail of a higher fixed grant for attic insulation up to €2,500"

why cant anyone buying a qualifying house get it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,676 ✭✭✭Same As

Recieved this by email from SEAI this evening, relevant for those with live applications for upgrade measures.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,501 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

still no idea where it leaves me with my door order in, spoke to the contractor and he’s going to register once it becomes available.

Heat Pump Grant of up to 12,500 wow thats some jump!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,470 ✭✭✭✭SteelyDanJalapeno

I think it's a 2k increase, seai have bundled in heating system upgrades too, i.e. new rads or ufh, which tbf are usually required

If your contractor can "delay" the install, then you are all good. Who knows, your order might have to be cancelled due to payment issues and reordered.
