STORM CHANDRA

Storm Chandra is going to develop very quickly from late this evening and overnight. It's a storm system that's really crept up on us without much forecasting. It's going to bring torrential rain to all parts on top of already saturated ground. Combined with this will be Southeasterly and Easterly gales and cyclonic conditions will also give strong southwesterly winds in western areas. The East coast is going to take a battering and coastal defences there are not very robust compared to our western seaboard. Keep up to date with warnings. Mods will change this thread if needed.

Thankfully not all coastal Eastern areas are within the yellow warning. People living along a 10km stretch of the East coast, in villages such as Bettystown, Laytown and Gormanstown, can be relaxed as winds meeting yellow warning level criteria will only impact areas to the north and south of these areas.

We're a hardy bunch in Meath.

I wonder will the easterly wind direction play havoc with Dublin Airport ?

Not often a named storm comes and we dont have to worry about it in Donegal.

Im surprised I hadn't heard about this on the news. Very low key. Even the Indo, who love a good scare story about storms, have it way down their list.

Easterly no.... south easterly yes as that would bring crosswinds into factor.

Anything between 060-140 direction should be ok but outside of that in high gusts there could be go arounds and diversions if gusting 45kts+

Arome has been upgrading run to run since the 00z. It's showing widespread borderline orange gusts for a lot of the southern half of the country now. Arpege looks pretty nasty for some areas too. However none of the other models are really on board, even ICON and UKMO are taking a relatively conservative view of it given their tendency to over estimate top gust potential and in all cases the strongest winds are moving through pretty quickly in a 3 hour or so window in the morning with potentially some further strong but not stormy winds later in the evening.

At this stage I expect the yellow warnings will remain I don't see any upgrades unless the model output changes significantly this evening.

Potentially could be an orange rainfall warning for Wicklow, there is a lot to come in the next 36 hours and it's falling on very wet ground and already swollen rivers. Potential for flooding is high I think.

we seem to be in the wind warnings but not rain?!

Harmonie also looks pretty nasty for the SE at first. It seems the highest-res models are showing the worst of it. Since it's a small, quickly developing, fast moving system maybe the lower-res models are having trouble with the details.

The rivers and streams in South Wicklow are very swollen since last Wednesday. We are up on an elevation and I haven't seen the roads as bad with water coming down from the hills. Not looking forward to this.

That looks to be a different Harmonie model than the one I see on Meteologix. I'm looking at the 06z run for 3pm tomorrow here which is the latest one on Meteologix.

I don't know what the meteologix one is, the Meteociel one updates every hour. Anyway, the latest one has it much further west, only really affecting the SW, barely any impact for the East. Tough one to call for sure.

Ye, It was Storm Bram on December 9th that brought SE gales that brought delays and cancellations to Dublin Airport.

Obviously things can change quickly, but M.T. didn't seem concerned at all in his morning forecast.

By strange coincidence we are having chicken tickka massala tonight.

12Z Arpege a bit further west, and stronger. Nasty for Waterford on this run. Strong gusts well inland on later frames too.

Arome also further west and stronger

Some nasty gusts expected along the south and southeast probably been a while since there has been a storm from the south of the country usually it's coming in from the west and northwest , I'd say upgrades could happen

Flying to Dublin from Lanzarote tomorrow evening, how rocky is it likely to be, based on current models?

Someone in the southeast has broken a mirror recently - they are getting all the rain and soon high winds.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

It looks a bad storm for the South. Gfs has upgraded also. An orange looks appropriate, will likely upgrade later

Been constantly raining heavy here for hours ... North Wicklow. I feel sorry for anyone who has to travel in that.

Many good friends of mine here in Portrane are fearing this event with a justifiable degree of trepidation. Years of cumulative storm damage to low lying sand dunes has resulted in spectacular erosion that now poses a threat to many nearby homes. Thankfully mine isn't among that vulnerable chort. But it's of particular concern here if a storm carries the triple whammy of low atmospheric pressure, strong easterly winds and seasonal high tides. In other words, the "perfect storm" ☹️

Blanket yellow warning across the border and orange for Down, Antrim and a part of Derry.

Orange marine warning now for the south coast

Models really are all over the place on this one. latest ECM much further west, showing Kerry/Clare getting highest gusts. East coast very gusty in the early hours of the morning, south coast barely gets a breeze (where there are currently Orange marine warnings).

How is anyone supposed to forecast this, if I was calling this in Met E, I'd just stick the whole country on Orange, go to bed, and quit my job in the morning lol

I’d say they are upgrading the warnings soon

I better go out and put the bungee cords on the bins and attach them to the tree. But what if the tree falls down, then it's the flippin house! 😮
