Ive no idea how much rain has fallen here but the land is saturated and most river basins are in flood. Enniscorthy is on edge and if this is week is as bad as last I'm sure they will have a big problem on their hands.

I am seeing mention of a storm on Tuesday on some of the usual sites. Will this happen? Or is it being blown out of proportion?

Enniscorthy will likely flood this week, as you said it's already on the edge. The Slaney has begun breaking the banks there and upstream, and there is a lot of rain forecast over the next few days, especially Tuesday night.

Article from Enniscorthy on Sat, the levels have already hit 3m today, subsiding back to around 2.8m currently.

Carlow weather post about Slaney upstream of Enniscorthy in Tullow, Carlow:

Here's Arpege accumulated rainfall chart out to Friday, not great especially when considering the slaney catchment area.

As for the storm, yes that be could another significant worry for the southeast. Latest Arpege shows at least Orange level wind gusts for Wexford!

I love the cold and snow but that’s way too cold , frostbite in no time with that. No thank you.

January has been quite wet in Wexford. Johnstown Castle has already received 131% of its full January average rainfall to the 24th, it should be around 78% by this point in the month. Doesn't also help that autumn was its second wettest on record and December was also much wetter than average. It's had 552.2mm from Nov 1st 2025 to Jan 24th 2026, that's 168% of average for the period. And given evaporation rates are naturally lower in winter with how weak the sun is, not surprising one bit that the land is saturated. November 2025 to January 2026 is likely to be its 2nd wettest of any 3 month period on record since 1941. It won't beat the first though of October to December 2002 which had an unbelievable 652.6mm, over 100mm more than the current run.

@Billcarson In response to post in FI thread… Dublin's wettest years on record and the dominant ENSO mode from that corresponding year. About an even split between El Niño and neutral but see how few La Niña years there are which is historically consistent with some of the notable drought periods like the 1930s and mid 70s.

    January in Ireland:

Very wet but too cold for a rain coat, too windy for an umbrella and too mild for snow.

The dark mornings & evenings, and lack of sunlight have finally taken the life out of me.

    Contemplating a week in Lanzarote.

I said to someone recently that this has felt like the longest winter that I remember with the weather being as you described for at least the last 3 months following on from a damp summer.

It's like The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe where it's always winter but never christmas, only, it's always winter but never cold enough for snow, just cold, wet and damp.

This exactly. This winter although not severe by any means, has been dark damp and bleak and the past three weeks or so would suck the energy from the soul. I find the lack of sunshine and very damp air to be the biggest challenge of the season.

Talking with colleagues in the US who are getting -20c(or lower), the point I make to them is Ireland due to the rain, the damp air makes the cold we get feel so much worse.

I lived in Czechia for a few years and -20c was not uncommon but actually felt nice. I didn't have any special clothing, just a standard winter coat. It would not be uncommon for me to just wear a t-shirt underneath the coat. Here, you have to layer up because the wind will cut through you. +4 here feels like -10 over there.

We had uninterrupted weeks of dry cold sunny weather Dec-Jan!

UK Met say Yellow wind & rain day long warnings all NI - yet our Met has nothing for the adjacent areas. Do the UK have a lower warning threshold? https://www.met.ie/warnings-tomorrow.html . How so?

Orange wind warning issued for tomorrow, by UKMO, for Antrim, Down and Derry.

I wonder will Met E follow suit for some eastern/southeastern counties?

I would think orange rain warning is possible for Wicklow, imagine the run off would be bad on top of recent rains too?

Same in Dublin, absolutly rotten every day it seams , been the worst winter I remember with just never-ending rain, I was hoping for a cold dry winter , this winter has been horrific, unless you like rain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,101 ✭✭✭mumo3

I was only saying in the office last week, this has to be the most depressing January for a while, they all said no every January is like this, but I think not!! I don't mind the rain, but that sh!tty hazy rain that doesn't look too bad but seems to drown you is a b!tch..coupled with a shocking public transport system that would give even the most trusting trust issues.

But on a side note, I think this month has flown in!! And I'm silently hoping that east coast storm in America might throw a bit of a snow storm across the Atlantic 😉

I'm officially done with this winter. This is perhaps the worst January I have ever experienced in my lifetime and I'm contemplating perhaps it's time to think about moving to southern Spain. I can't take much more of being stuck indoors day after day just looking out at rain and swamp like garden. I've had enough of it. This winter can go to hell.

Very windy and lashing with rain all day on the far SE coast. Feels like it has been the exact same weather pattern for weeks now.

Gusting over 80 km/h in my location and driving rain.

The calm, dry Christmas period feels a long time ago now!

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,335 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

    Winter so far:

6 weeks of deluges, 2 weeks of dry weather. At least another 7 to 10 days of the washing machine to go at the very least. The 2 week dry spell over Christmas does seem like a lifetime ago, this winter will be just remembered for one thing. A chilly dark miserable winter with day after day of rain.

Currently hammering rain here in Meath and it may not stop raining completely until Wednesday.

Storm Chander is going to develop very quickly for tomorrow. I wonder will some of the Mods open a thread. This looks nasty for most of the country particularly for the South and eastern areas.
