    hi all,

Can anyone clarify if you have to bring 10KG luggage through security in T2 in Dublin airport with aer Lingus?

    The email I have says:

Drop off at airport check-in desk”

Does this mean that when I arrive to the airport and check in at the luggage desk and show my ticket/ passport etc, before security that that take the 10KG bags, or does it mean I have to go through security with the 10KG bags and then drop them with the aer Lingus staff before we board the plane?
The email says I have no checked luggage as I didn’t purchase any.
Im a bit confused as if have liquids over 100mls in the 10KG bags so if I go through security I presume I have to have them out in a clear plastic bag to go through security.
    thanks for any help folks.

You drop it off at the airport check in desk.

    Exactly as it says !
In some airports there’s a self service kiosk where you can tag the bag and put it on the belt.
You’ll see it when you get there, very easy, and staff floating around the floor to assist

It sounds like you have an allowance for a 10kg carry-on bag as part of your fare. You would not then be dropping a bag at check-in. The information in the email is for people who have booked checked bags (this can be done self service).

However, there are new rules for carry-on bags at Dublin Airport security. I have copied the new rules below:

    New Rules For Smoother Travel
    What’s changed?
Liquids, gels and electronics can stay in your carry-on baggage when going through security.

There is no limit on the number of liquids and gels that can be carried in your carry-on baggage.

The previous 100ml maximum limit on liquids and gels no longer applies, and items in containers up to 2 litres can be brought through security.

Liquids and gels no longer need to be packed inside clear plastic bags.

Aer Lingus saver fares require you to check-in the 10kg allowance or pay a fee (10 euro-must add online to booking) to carry onboard. You can only carry a small bag onboard.

All other fare types can carry the 10kg onboard free and small bag.

Yeah so just to answer this question I rang Aer Lingus and they confirmed that you check in the 10KG bag at the desk BEFORE security, while you are showing your passport and boarding pass etc.

So the email is a bit confusing as it says I have no checked luggage, even though I have to give the 10KG bags to the attendant at the check in desk before security.

    Anyway question answered!!

Just to say the opening bit here is wrong. The standard (ie cheapest) Aer Lingus fares include 10kg checked luggage.

You have to pay extra to carry on or larger checked in luggage

To be fair it’s clearly laid out at the booking stage. It costs extra to carry on. The “drop off at desk” is effectively them saying that you have to check in for your flight online and then use the bag drop off service in the airport.

The “checked bag” name is for the larger allowance bags

It’s not really clear at all, as the “drop off at desk” could mean the desk after security before you board the plane where you show your passport and boarding pass etc.

The guy I spoke to on the phone agreed that this could be more clear on the email.

Anyway sorted now so all good thanks.

To be fair is states “drop off at airport check in desk”

    I think that’s pretty clear.

However I would agree there’s slightly conflicting terminology about calling the product a check in bag or cabin luggage etc.

It's not altogether surprising that people who don't fly regularly get confused at being asked to check in a bag that is not, in fact, considered to be a checked bag.

    Just my €10.

in Dublin airport it’s a self service check in machine

Your just scan your boarding pass and put your bag on the scales, a tag is printed that you attach to your bag and then you go to the desk and scan your tag and your bag goes on the conveyor belt

Yep that’s exactly what happened this morning and we are now safely in CDG at the mercy of the baggage handlers 🤣

Slightly connected question, am I correct that if going through pre clearance you follow the guidelines for Dublin airport security liquids I.e up to 2 liters? The USA TSA rules don't apply to liquids in dub?

Dublin airport security is compliant with TSA requirements. There is no additional USA security check after passing through the normal Dublin one

Passengers originating in Dublin are not normally subject to security checks at CBP, but may be subject to random inspection

If flying through JFK with an onward connection you may have to go through security again, at other US airports you can avoid security.

I completely sympathise with the OP, Aer Lingus seem to go out of their way to make this confusing.

Using a term like 'drop off' is crazy. I know it includes the stipulation that you drop it at the check-in desk but a lot of people who are not frequent travellers don't get the distinction betwen the check-in desk, the self-sevice machines and the boarding gate.

I booked flights for three of us at the weekend with the standard 10 kgs check-in bag per person - no carry-on. When I scroll to the bottom of the booking confirmation e-mail, there are two lists …..

    ===============

    10KG Bags

Each passenger is listed with 'Drop off at airport check-in desk' beside each leg

    Checked Bags

Each passenger is listed with 'No checked bags' beside each leg

    ===============

    Clear as mud.
