    Hi Ruddy

My wife and I are on vhi company plan plus1.3.Both of us in our 50s living in Dublin.

I am nearing the end of cancer treatment. Just on medication now getting monthly blood tests. My wife has no health issues. We do use the day to day expenses a bit..chiropodist g.p etc.

Is there any other that you can recommend. T.I.A.

i think you are overthinking it a little! Definitely best option is moving to prosper advanced.

Other point to note is Laya allow you to move plans mid year so if you did go over your €2,000 allowance you could move plan mid year to one that had a higher outpatient limit.

    Hi Ruddy1987

I have been reading all your feedback to various people you really are generous with your time!

I am wondering would you have any insight for myself please as I’m due for renewal very soon,me and my 2 year old are on Laya Signify,I am 39 yrs old female no huge health concerns,I go to a consultant 1/2 twice a year and routine GP visits. My 2 year old has no huge health concerns either thankfully just the usual toddler ailments.

If you had any recommendations/thoughts I’d be grateful, thanks so much!

My renewal has come up, pmi 6310 and it's gone way up. But being in Cork, I'm starting to question if we will ever need high tech hospital cover. At the risk of sounding stupid, why would I ever need Galway/blackrock when all the Cork private (Bons, mater) are covered?

    Hi Ruddy1987

I wonder if you could give me a steer.

I am coming off a corporate plan. We are generally healthy family in our late 40s (2+1kid) and price is important.

Maternity, orthopaedics and optical are not important. Would like online GP care and some contribution for consultants.

Was looking at IL Kickoff plan but perhaps there are better out there ?

    Thanks in advance

it’s not the worst plan out there but a few alternatives to consider, PMI 45 10, PMI 46 10 or if open to above health guide 2 at €1,621 (discount link in previous posts) is very well priced.

Have a look at the Hia comparison :

As your child is under three I’d be looking at level health for the free child cover, something like plan b 300 or plan b 300 day to day.

    hi Ruddy,

Great advice here . I changed from Laya (Excel Care ) to VHI ; I am tied to VHI as work contributes; only plan I could find with VHI that was as good as Excel Care is PMI 64 10 - it’s very expensive. My renewal is due and only other plan that is reasonable is PMI 24 10. Rest of the family are with Laya.

Any other options with VHI you’d recommend? I’d like good day-to-day benefits and access to private hospitals. Am Dublin based, female early 50’s.

    Many thanks

    Hi ruddy,

Great reading with a lot of info to take in. My own background is I'm 43m, no health insurance ever. But on the plus side I'm healthy with no issues as of yet. 1 yearly visit to the DR and same to dentist and I'm good for another year. I'm thinking around the 1800e mark a year as a price point

There is history of cardiac in the family.

Don't mind sharing rooms for hospital stays or excess of around the 200e mark be it for consultations or say hospital admissions once the large bill items are covered

From reading through the posts here I seen you recommended Laya's simply health choice before to another poster, would this be a good starting package in my situation??? Also what sort of wait times is there for new entrants before you can actually claim on stuff???

Based in Galway so I know the two major private hospitals are covered by both, but maybe both are not equal?

The main issue for you is going to be the LCR loading. As you are 43 you will have a loading of 18% to pay for the next 10 years. This is why you should potentially consider a lower plan now and get on the ladder first and then look to increase cover as you get older and potential items arise.

Some plans to consider as a starting point noting the additional loading of 18% on top of standard premiums

Irish Life Health- My Plan 350 day to day (€1,105.70 + Loading), Health Guide 2 (€1,604 + loading)

    Laya- Signify Care (€1,210 +loading), Inspire (€1,642 + loading)

Have a look at these and see what you think. Given your limited needs currently I dont think you need to go from zero to top cover straight away, you can upgrade your plan as stuff develops given the extra loading you need to pay.

VHI have a poor range of plans for anyone looking at having a private room cover in a private hospital. PMI 24 10 is one of their best private room plans and it has a fixed excess for private room against most of their plans which have a nightly excess. I would say you should be looking to move to 24 10.

    Amazing thread Ruddy! Thank you.

My renewal on PMI 07 10 is due early February. Based on your advice I'm thinking PMI 47 10. However I could stretch budget a bit more. What do you think of PMI 51 10?

I'm Dublin based, so happy with the exclusion of Bons, Whitfield, Galway. Male, 43. Cardiac Care is probably the most important thing for me (family history). Make good use of VHI 360 in Carrickmines so keen to stay with VHI.

The issue with Kick Off is that it only has 65% coverage in Private hospitals. I would be looking to potentially go for something like my Plan 500 for the adults which costs €975.59 per adult (via the link). Once signed up contact Irish Life and ask them to add Nurture Plus for the kids (€150 each). This would be a total of €2,251.18 against €2,078 on Kick Off. You would have much better cover.

The High tech cover that most plans restrict is usually only Mater Private and Blackrock Clinic. People do want to keep cover for these hospital, specially for items like cardiac as they are seen as the best hospitals in the country for treatment.

If open to a vender change Health Guide 2 stacks up very well and at €1,604 would be very attractive, Inspire at €1,642 next best. VHI done have many better alternatives than your current plan, PMI 43 16 is a good plan but that's more expensive than your current plan so I would be saying stay where you are if you want to stay with VHI and are happy with benefits.

Thanks Ruddy. The question I can't seem to find the answer to is what would I ever need to go to these Dub high tech hospitals that a regular private in Cork wouldn't give? I can't find anyone who has been to one of these hospitals out of necessity. Hence I have the thought in my head that it's not worth including.

thanks so much for the input

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

you could want access to a consultant that only works in one of these hospitals. You can get any treatment you want likely in cork, but that might not be with a particular consultant or expert.

    Hi Ruddy,

my renewal is 1st Feb. Family of 5. One child going on inspire health and other 2 on the flex freebie. OH on 360 care select need this plan due to day to day cant swap.

I am on currently on simply health extra. Need to get my premium down. Laya suggested inspire health….ilh suggested my plan 350 day to day €92 per month or the 150 one…vhi suggested 150 or 300 enhanced care 350 day to day or the 150 one.

many other thoughts? Laya hve waived the monthly charge for me.

    thanks so much

Hi Ruddy, any chance of getting this cheaper for similar cover, currently with Irish life

Female 52 health guide 2 (want this as is or similar don't want to lose 50 % off Gp visits)

    Male 52 myplan 350

    Male 20 myplan 350

    Male 14 myplan 350

    Female 14 myplan 350

    Premium for 2026 3900€ 😭

easiest way to get the same cheaper is to sign the person on Hg2 to a new plan via the link €1604. Then sign everyone on my plan up on another plan via link and that will save 8.33%. Cancel existing plan then.

Hi Ruddy. My wife and I, mid 50s, no known health problems. We have had Laya Simply Connect for years, only claims during all the years we’ve had it are for glasses, the odd GP visit, a health screen in The Mater Private a few yrs ago. The renewal is due 02/02 and the price rises are difficult.
Any advice on similar policies with lower price?

    Thanks.

    Hi Rusty,

I'm wondering if you could please advise? We are with VHI, they are recommending PMI 10 11. We are late 50s, have a few ortho issues but not in imminent need of joint replacements. Also, both of us have medical cards so not concerned about GP cover but we do infrequently attend consultants for arthritis. Not too fussed about private beds but just want ease of access, emergency care, cover for MRIs etc to keep an eye on the joint issues and VHI swiftcare access. In Cork so don't feel too pushed about the high tech hospitals in Dublin. Thinking of moving our young adults (age 22 and 25) to PublicPlus Care as they don't need private hospital beds. They are currently on FirstCare 500 Day to Day. Was thinking of keeping the younger 2 on FirstCare 500 Day to Day as their premium isn't big but the young adults are becoming really expensive to keep on the higher plan. Kids are generally healthy. Do you think we should stick with PMI 10 11?

Hi Ruddy sorry to come back to this. I've had a look through and I can't see the major difference to outpatient benefits. Could you spell it out to me like I'm an idiot?

I presume you mean link in very 1st post, as if taking out new policy direct with company and cancelling oldone, ie not renewing?

I ran the numbers there and savings of 366.60, spot on man, you are doing God's work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

    Prime Prosper Care

GP €40 per visit 75% of costs (if GP more than €60 Prosper Care better)

Consultant €125 per visit 75% of costs (if more than €170 Prosper Care better)

For most people that will result in better cash back on Proposer Care. Also the plan is cheaper, so a no brainer for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

PMI 10 11 is very well priced. One thing i would flag to you is to be aware that its excludes hospitals in Waterford and Kilkenny and also likely more important is that this plan does not cover you in the old Swift care clinics as (360 centres now) as it does not have minor injury cover.

If ok with that i would say no better alternative with VHI. VHI are also best value for young adults so I would be leaving them with VHI.

If open to a move Health Guide 2 is slightly more expensive but better cover overall and includes cover for the Irish Life health minor injury clinic in Cork. I would only move the adults if you consider a move.
