20 minutes to throw in Meath v Derry at Croke Park. Very small crowd.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Meath 0-19 Derry 1-13. The Royal county 5 two pointers and Derry with just two a telling difference in that match.

Donegal v Dublin just started on TG4 now.

    Crowd seems tiny.

There was a goal for Donegal there if he had gotten the handpass away

    Decent game so far

Nearly a 2nd Donegal goal before the break. 6 point lead for them and full value for it.

Other than Con O'Callaghan Dublin struggling for scores.

I'm assuming Allianz doesn't insure any of those Dublin player's sponsered cars

Did they change the rule with the hooter and the end of a game or half? Am I remembering it wrong or was the play still live after the hooter went until the ball went dead?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,254 ✭✭✭blowitupref

Improvement from Dublin 2nd half as they scored 0-14 but that poor 1st half display proved costly for them.

As for Donegal deserved win in Croke Park while blooding a few new players. They'll be pleased with 5 two pointers after getting zero on their last visit to Croke Park.

at game in croker most of crowd Meath , then dublin. Maybe 40 % Meath 40 dublin , 15 Donegal and 5 Derry

Hooter ends first half and second half, except for these circumstances:

"A player can still take a penalty, a free, '45, or a sideline kick if it has been awarded or flagged when the hooter sounds, but only on the condition that it is a direct, uncontested shot at goal. No team-mate is permitted to touch the ball."

    https://www.rte.ie/sport/football/2025/1202/1546861-hooter-change-ahead-of-2026-lgfa-set-to-trial-12-rules/#:~:text=A%20player%20can%20still%20take,direct%2C%20uncontested%20shot%20at%20goal.

The hooter runs in conjunciton with the clock, so it should ensure that the correct amount of playing time takes place. From The Examiner:

"The public clock will be stopped for on-field injury treatment, the issuing of yellow, black and red cards, all substitutions, melees, deliberate or incidental delays and consultations with HawkEye score detection technology. The clock runs through kick-outs, free kicks and 45s. For back-up purposes, the time official, who records the time of a game on the signal of the referee, will keep a record of time on a stopwatch."

"The intention is for the technology to be phased in during the latter part of the Division 3 and 4 campaigns but for now it will be confined to the top two divisions for the early part of the competition."

Very poor crowd at Croke Park. Hopefully that trend will continue with the competition being sponsored by a company which funds the genocide of Palestinians.

It was 23,707 - but must have been 8-10k for the Derry v Meath match. Can’t remember a lower attendance since. a CP league match where there was frost/sleet and was on the same day as a big Ireland 6 nations match.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Tyrone seem to be the only county out there with any self respect.

Removed Allianz pitchside advertising from Healy Park and refused to mention them in the match programme.

Absolut horrible day to be out at a game. Normally be a huge amount of kids at league games but hard to justify bringing them out on a day like that. Driving up the moterway to Croke park i thought the games could be called. Weather had a massive effect on the attendance id of thought.

    Up Donegal

Over 23,000 in Croke Park tonight, thought that was a decent attendance.

I think if Meath play Dublin in Leinster. I honestly would have Meath favourites. Not only do Meath have 4/5 different two point options. They have pure power. That midfield they have means business. Defend in packs as well. The match v Derry was good because of the contrast in styles.

Unlike Dublin both Meath and Derry have a system and tactic that is well practiced and all the players know their roles.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Jaysus, that's a tough way for Roscommon to lose in Tralee after coming back well. Great winning point from the young lad though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,972 ✭✭✭Coillte_Bhoy

What ahppened exactly? Was watching the deferred coverage in the pub but nobidy seemd to know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,256 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Roscommon had the ball, free given against them between halfway and the 45 for the # 7 kicking out as he fell to the ground. Clock was stopped at 69:57. Sean OS launched it into the square, Kennedy caught it and fisted it over just as the hooter went

great game between mayo and galway , i watched it back this evening excellent game robbie hennelly is some man he must have made 4 point blank saves and kicked a few great two pointers in the process

mayo have some brilliant forwards coming through from the last few under 20s , but they need a clone for sam callanan , at the moment hes the glue holding that back line together

Fell to the ground... LOL!! About 3 fouls on that scramble, but Cawley just had to give Kerry one last chance to win it, so he manufactures a free that wasn't there.

Roscommon blew it though, missed a good chance to go ahead late on and all they had to do was get a punch that late free into the goal mouth. Two points dropped perhaps, one dropped certainly, points that may be important after 7 games.

Was pleasantly surprised by that Ros performance. With 7 debutants and without the Brigids and Strokestown lads... that was a daunting fixture, away to the AI Champions.

And we really should have beaten them, despite an atrocious refereeing performance from Cawley.

The key moment for me was half-way through the second half when Cregg elected to shoot himself from a tight angle instead of squaring to the unmarked Doyle for a tap-in goal.

It's remarkable to say, that as good as he was with 9 points, he left at least 1 if not two goals behind him.

It can't be said often enough, but Cawley gave the worst refereeing performance I've seen in many years there today. 80% of his bad decisions favoured Kerry and that final score 2 seconds after the hooter, was the icing on the cake from his ****-show of a day.

Some interesting Division 1 games today.

    Armagh comfortable v Monaghan

Mayo hung on v Galway after they led by 11

Lucky win for Kerry the rossies deserved at least a draw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 478 ✭✭Old_-_School

Kerry Roscommon game again showed the ridiculous of the 50m offense for not handing the ball back. Mike Breen handed the ball back perfectly and Ref penalised Kerry 50m, gifting Roscommon 2 pts.

So many people incorrectly thinking there was only 2 seconds left for the last free 🤦. That was the tg4 clock which was out of sync with the match clock. Anyone who has watched the tg4 ladies football would have known the tg4 clock is always a few seconds ahead of the match clock!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,854 ✭✭✭Always_Running

The Rossies were properly saddled by Brendan Cawley who I've never rated as a ref. Kerry’s first goal was a square ball, the penalty award was a total joke and the final free in for Kerry that led to the winner should have gone the other way.

In this day and age of electronics they should be able to hook the real clock up to to the TV broadcast, so that the issue does not arise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 24,530 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

These days many people are watching internet streams, like the TG4 player. I check it against the broadcast coming in on my TV aerial just now, and the stream is 15 seconds behind.

The streams and broadcasts are also ususally delayed from the real time satellite or fibre feeds delivered from the match venues. In the future there will be no over the air broadcasts, just streaming the way things are going.

Nice entertainment for for 1st league game between galway and mayo. Actually looked a lovely day there, meanwhile it was miserable where I live.

Mayos 3 goals were well taken and showed good composure. In contrast Rob finnerty had a chance in the 1st half but absolutely blasted it over the bar. My point is why do some players hit the ball so hard when so near the goal. Just roll it like Mayos 2nd goal

Even at the highest levels, I think human nature overtakes coaching. Seen also where players shoot when there is an open goal available with a pass to a colleague. Or clearances are hoofed in a blind panic, when the ball could be passed out of defence. Not just in GAA, but at the highest levels in soccer on occasions also.

On another day Galway could have had 5 goals, and the Mayo keeper would be the villain instead of the hero.

Galway were missing some really important players yesterday - Cillian McDaid, John Maher, Paul Conroy, Matthew Thompson. You could (debatably) add Damien Comer there too, but he is injured more often than he plays, so he's a bit of an anomaly.
