The average of all model output would suggest a dangerous storm system is low probability.

It looks like we're dodging a bullet (close to Eowyn's 1st anniversary)with an intense storm developing to the South of Ireland tomorrow. Of course as its filling and moving Northwards we're going to get it's rain.

12 hour period of Snowfall for Leinster on the GFS 06Z.

The latest (12z) GFS run is suggesting that there could be a snowfall event in many eastern areas this coming Monday night, with snow settling inland. Images below are from the higher resolution 0.125° GFS model.

    image.png image.png image.png image.png image.png

It shows a large amount of the east midlands receiving over 10cm of snow during the event with some parts receiving over 15cm, however bear in mind that these depths are in the event that there is no snow melt. So based on the two sets of figures, the snow would be rather wet…….eg: knife edge dinner plate stuff, which means it right on the cusp of being rain or snow.

I wonder will the word "marginal" be used between now and Monday night!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 838 ✭✭✭Snowbiee21

Gerry will be mentioning plenty of sleet and snow confined mainly to higher ground!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,316 ✭✭✭Dazler97

Wow I wonder how much snow will fall 😳 let's see anyway

Tuesday into Wednesday is worth keeping an eye on. All very marginal it must be said.

Ah lads looks like we are getting all the snow again in Munster 😉🤣

Models keep showing potential for frontal snow but where is the question, different location every run, certainly worth keeping an eye on it.

UKMO seems to think otherwise. Snow potential on Tuesday afternoon/evening:

    image.png

Freezing level very close to or at sea level in many midland areas where heavy precipitation is expected to be falling:

    image.png

    And potential snowfall totals:

    image.png

UKMO did very well in the last UK snowfall event not long ago however Tuesday is a fairly long way away and details could and will likely change between now and then, but interesting to see, in any case.

And where it rains and does not snow, 3 hour rainfall totals are very high in parts of the east, which would lead to flooding, especially as it's been so wet of late.

A small risk of rain turning to snow on high ground from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning.

GFS messy wintry mix , elevation in Munster most favoured

    image.png

ECM also messy wintry mix Ulster best placed late Tuesday morning/early afternoon

    IMG_6368.jpeg

6z ecm below looks a bit better but that’s what is projected to fall not accumulations.

    image.png

As it stands it doesn’t look much to write home about. A messy mix with rain more likely currently but hopefully some upgrades closer to the time.

UK met office has a rain warning issued for Tuesday for the North with no mention of snow even in the assessment. So it seems pretty low risk at present.

Outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, will spread across Northern Ireland during Tuesday, clearing to showers later in the day. Rainfall totals are expected to reach 15-25 mm widely, with 40-60 mm possible across high ground. With wet conditions leading up to this period the rain will fall onto saturated ground and may be accompanied by strong southeasterly winds, accentuating impacts in places.

Just going through the charts as well.Donegal and chances of any accumulation of snow diminishing by the run apart from more elevated ground like hills and Mountains. Big sloppy mix of rain sleet and pockets of heavy wet snow. The Eastern half of the country getting a fair shot of rainfall accumulation over the coming days.

I see Met Eireann do mention snow for high ground on Tuesday, but at the same time don't totally exclude some falling on lower ground. I think the reality is cold rain for most people. It will feel very raw in that easterly breeze too

Tomorrow looking dry ish if rather cloudy.A day to get out and about before a very wet first half of next week.

Yes it did diminish overnight, rain the main story. GFS just increased snow potential for Ulster and Leinster so still some room for improvements.

Yeah it seems to be making a fair bit of snow out of not very cold air aloft but the pressure is low bringing the cold closer to the ground. Will see what the next twist on the road brings. Rain ( heavy in places ) following later Weds / Thurs.

Complex pattern with LP's and fronts swirling around , mixed in with cold air ( and not very cold at that ).

ECM 12Z mainly Ulster getting some snow but showing wintry precipitation across the whole island but probably lots of cold rain and sleet with a few white mountain ridges and tops of the highest hills on the current run.

A non event, wet snow at best. Even if it did stick it would be gone immediately. Longer term gathering pace though!!

Places like, Leitrim, Cavan, Fermanagh, Tyrone looks like sweet spots Tuesday for some temporary snow accumulations high parts if Donegal also. I think there is alot more of a risk here of places seen snow compared to a few weeks ago when that snow warning was issued for the south Cork and Waterford. Ecmwf model looks interesting this morning. Could be fairly disruptive if that fsme of on the Tuesday morning rush hour

Arome coming into view, showing less than other models. (The far north gets cut off on Arome). Still plenty of time for change. Would love another March 1st 24 ninja snow event 🤐

    ECM sticking to its guns

    IMG_6374.jpeg

The warning for the north now includes a wind warning for gusts of up to 70mph for eastern and northern coasts , along with a rain warning it won’t be pleasant. Snow is mentioned for the first time but not much made of it.

Outbreaks of rain will spread across Northern Ireland during Tuesday, perhaps falling as snow for a time on high ground, before turning more showery later in the day. Rainfall totals of 15-25 mm are likely fairly widely, with 40-60 mm possible on high ground, especially in eastern areas. Given the saturated nature of the ground, this may lead to some flooding.

Rain will also be accompanied by strong east to southeasterly winds, particularly in northern and eastern areas where peak gusts of 40-50 mph are possible inland and potentially 60-70 mph along some exposed coasts.

Now a combined wind and rain warning, with impact level increased from low to medium and text updated accordingly. Start time also brought forward and end time extended.

The GFS has the large parent low filling but creating a sister low which is still developing as it comes up from a southeasterly direction and crosses the country at 955 hp on Tuesday. Alot of rain/wet snow and coastal flooding with strong winds shifting from different directions. Nasty looking system and might get named (Chandra). Something to keep an eye on for sure.

does look like very tight isobars alright? Looking at the wind charts, possibly high orange for South east but I may be misreading! I’m a bit rusty!
