Upgrading my car and looking at 2024 skoda octavia. I see a 1 litre petrol and a 2 litre diesel models being available.

What are the 1 litre petrols like. Our driving is generally trips of 30km a few times a week, with a weekly trip of 120km on the motorway.

The petrol seems to be a few thousand cheaper than the diesel. Im not mad into cars or poke or drive. So long as its solid on the road, im happy. What is the 1 litre petrol like to drive?

I'm not too in with VAG cars but the octavia is a big enough car for a 1.0 petrol to be pushing around, Turbo probably under some amount of stress to make it driveable, cant say that'd affect the car at 2 years old.

At the other end, 2.0 diesel with all the modern emissions regulations, personally I'd chance my arm at the 1.0 even if I didn't know about its pros and cons.

There's a few people here that will be able to advise better.

I have an Mk4 Combi with the 1.0 TSI engine and had my concerns which is why I made sure to get a test drive before getting it new in 2023.

Really surprised me though and the 110HP has more than enough for the odd overtake or 2 on the N4 when we're heading West which can be a few times a year. That includes 3 small kids in the back and a fairly laden down boot.

First time going with a DSG too but no issues to report heading in to year 3 albeit with only about 25K km on it as we're city based.

There is also a 1.5l petrol Octavia. Harder to find though.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

A friend of mine is on his third 1 litre Octavia combi and swears by the engine. He regularly makes a run from Mayo to Dublin and back so it is well capable on long journeys. With 5 kids, he needs the space but also has a second car in the family so they are never all in the Octavia at the same time.

All 3 cars have been reliable and only needed the usual servicing items.

No experience of the diesels though.

We have the diesel version. We justified it because we are high mileage (80,000km annually), and tow from time to time. If we were low mileage and no towing, we would have gone petrol.

And just on the car itself, I think this is similar with all modern cars as a safety "feature" but the 2025 model, really frustrates me with auto-braking, lane-assist steering and having to do so much through the computer panel. The lane assist is annoying with roadworks, as it tries to force you to follow the road lines. The auto-brake is way too sensitive, I actually thought it was trying to get me rear-ended a few times in autumn, it would SLAM on the brakes every time a flurry of leaves blew past.

You can turn it off, but you have to do it every single time, and it's 7 clicks on that panel thing, so we never bother.

The 1L engine will be completely fine for your requirements

You can turn off the lane assist and speed warning via the steering wheel in 2 clicks, I was doing it the same as you and figured there had to be a safer way to do it!

    Owned 1.2 l Octavia

    It’s fine up to 80kmh

Can do motorway but nothing crazy

Overtakes think twice in that car

Biggest problem was it was taking forever to warm up the cabin in winter

I would take 2l diesel over it

You do motorway trips weekly so it would not clog up dpf

Price difference is only because our stupid VRT brackets!

I have that 115bhp version of that 1.0 Tsi engine in a Seat Arona. Power, reliability and fuel consumption are excellent. It'll be fine for the OP's in an Octavia

110 but I was used to driving diesel bmw at the time of owning that car so it felt very underpowered to me

I’m in a 172 Octavia 1.0 TSI 110 BHP for 2 years now. I’m not a fan of the road noise on rough roads or suspension of the car but the engine is surprisingly nippy and rarely struggles. I’ve done many West Cork to Dublin drives in it, perfectly fine for motorways.

I’m not sure if newer models got better suspension. If they did, I’d be thinking of upgrading to a top trim Estate model.

2021 MK3 Combi, with the 1.0Tsi engine. These are the numbers from a trip back to Dublin from Letterkenny. I'm very satisfied with mine...totally trouble free motoring (with the exception of a puncture) for the last 5 years.

Wonder what resale on 1.0 octavia is like. ? Would others not be put off when they see 1 litre also ?

Persuaded a buddy who only has few km work commute to buy a 2019 superb 1.5 petrol a few years back . its been a great buy . He got a lower mileage car than typical diesel at better price and less possible problems

I have a 21 2L diesel octavia estate. when i picked it up it had 115bhp (it has rather more now) it was as slow as a wet weekend, forget overtaking anything …….ever! auld wans used to leave me for dead going up hills.

I'd agree with crap suspension (all 4 shocks in my car had been replaced by 120K) road noise isnt great.

There is a setting that will allow the lane assist etc to remember the last setting i.e. if its off it stays off until turned back on, but you need a guy with a laptop to toggle it.

I drove that car with 115bhp and the nonsense lane assist (which on small county roads is bloody dangerous) for 2 weeks till my map was ready. if the map/ coding was not available, i wouldn't have kept it.
