Hi, I'm looking for recommendations for a decent wet food for my older dog that won't break the bank. I'd prefer one I can buy in a shop, Maxi Zoo or Petmania but willing to buy online if necessary. Thanks in advance.

Rocco comes to my mind directly as you're talking about €3 a kg or so but I'm not a dog food expert and I'm sure there are plenty of other options out there.

Thanks I'll have a look at that. I'm hoping someone will come along with a knowledge of dog food because although budget is important I'd want it be nourishing as well.

The wet trays in Aldi and Lidl are Naturo which is decent. I feed it alongside raw. Just handy especially in Lidl because you can earn points, sometimes they have a coupon etc. It’s only chicken in Lidl… Aldi do a variety but the chicken + beef flavour doesn’t agree with one of my boys so we stick to the chicken from Lidl! Funny they sent me a video last year of my top 3 products - the wet food was my #1 and treats was #2 😆

I would also agree with tk123 above, the vet told us to swap our food (one of the big brands) to Lidl's 70% meat % and ironically it's one which that is cheaper and according to the vet healthier for all dogs.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. Is there any link to the trays ye're talking about ?

    I've started making it.

For example, 1 chicken/turkey mince/beef mince, 1 sweet potato, 1 carrot, and a handful of peas. Some salmon oil. Hes loves it. Big healthy poos.

A friend of mine swears by Butternut Box. It's an online subscription thing he gets once a month or so. It comes frozen in a variety of flavours. He says it's expensive though but there are often discount codes around. They send me codes regularly because I entered some competition a while back.

Apparently it's human grade food. I actually tasted a couple of spoonfuls of the vegetable variety 😂 and it was nice. It tasted a bit like a pâté.

Was using it by decided to make it myself, as above. Same ingredients.

Don’t forgot when making food yourself you need offal and a source of calcium eg bone or eggshell.. commercial foods will have these added for you. My guys are raw fed with some wet mixed it… we did try butternut in the past but it had way too much veg for them = farting the house down and giant poos (vs nice compact raw poos!)

My fella gets kibble with those in it and topped up with wetfood. 50/50. Farts at a minimum!

I'd recommend Rocco too, I get it on Zooplus. I had my 15 & 16 year old dogs on it right up until they passed. Weirdly the senior version didn't agree with them but the regular ones did.

They were in great health right up til the end, when both had sudden short illnesses.

My remaining girl loves it, I do add a little veg, a piece of broccoli or cauliflower just because she loves it.

We have a subscription for Butternut Box (we order on subscription and quite a bit each time so it ends up being quite reasonable), the food is top notch and my doggie loves it but there are definitely cheaper options so it depends on what you are looking for

Nearly everyone I spoke to that use Rocco said their dogs loved it. I tried it with mine but he doesn't eat it, at least not enough. He was eating the Earls pouches from Aldi but seems gone off that now. I may try the Lidl one next.

Are the Lidl and Aldi wet foods really naturo ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,009 ✭✭✭✭tk123

Yes - if you compare the labels it’s the same factory!

Oh right I wouldn't have great knowledge of dog food. When I googled Lidl wet food v naturo I got this:

"While Naturo is a premium, high-meat content food with transparent labeling, Lidl Orlando is a budget-friendly option with vague ingredients and lower meat percentages"

Is it Orlando you mean, or do Lidl have another wet food.

It’s the Orlando pure taste 60% chicken one

Great thanks very much for that. If he doesn't take to that I'll have to try making my own.
