It can be hard to keep up with a lot of the crap that Trump and his supporters spew so I must have missed when Greenland banned U.S. companies from mining there so when did that happen ?

If you are really interested in why they are not mining there, rather than backing a megalomaniac who threatens force and tariffs attempting to get his way, (both now yet another embarrassing TACO), try and do a bit of research as to why.

In private yeah. I think all that is fairly weird, though leaking private messages as Trump is clearly fond of doing now is also bizarre.

He had a fairly restrained public response to the whole Greenland thing which I think as head of NATO was probably the correct approach. It is just not that satisfying to witness.

The daddy thing is definitely bizarre. For someone who led the Dutch government for so long to be reduced to that is horrendous.

As far as I can tell, European leaders are in no position to unequivocally break off relations with the US, even under Trump. Too intertwined economically and militarily.

If they were to do this, it would create a sudden economic downturn while massively increasing the need for military spending. This would invariably necessitate redirection of funds from things like infrastructure and social programs that would cause a wipeout of sitting governments across the continent.

In other words it's a delicate situation created from 80 years of sitting under the US's military umbrella, never considering that they might one day go mad.

But in the medium term to long term, the US does need to be told to fk off in a non-explicit way. Follow Mark Carney's advice of creating an alliance of middle powers with more stable democracies. It's not a perfect strategy, since any of these countries can also go mad, and some mad parties are polling very high in places like the UK, France and Germany, but it's still better than hoping the US will return to some state of political equilibrium.

Her self esteem must be absolutely non-existent.

This is just a reprieve. Give it two weeks and he'll either come back to it or have some other stupid idea to attack the EU as a whole or just individual countries.

I hope Europe uses the time wisely. We should quietly weaken the dollar, get the military increase expedited, get some rules in place about a united European force and set about trying to make a home for money and companies that want to exit the US.

Definitely within the rest of his term we'll end up at some kind of dispute and we can't assume the US will ever be a force for good. They've shown for 70years now that they can't be trusted.

Oh it is completely bizarre and not a little pathetic. But I have some twisted respect for someone willing to be pathetic in the search of something more globally productive.

Absolutely. Europe needs to disengage, but it will take years to do that and doing it any quicker will be deeply punishingly difficult. The important thing is that given this temporary respite they actually continue with the disengagement.

Wow CNN really going to town on Trump just now, fact checked his speech in Davos and called out all the lies!

This is a welcome change in reporting on one of the main news channels over there.

100 percent. In the real world this literally has to be handled without obviously escalating whatever situation Trump has concocted, work behind the scenes to defuse whatever BS he is at (by whatever means necessary) and in parallel contine to build and strengthen other international relationships, trade agreements and cooperation.

The two sets of economies as well as the military complex are simply too far intertwined to escalate.

The last week has been absolutely crazy. Trump has ended up in the same position as this time last week except now they've really pissed off the allies and neighbours who will continue to look at alternatives.

    This. This 100%.

The Clown almost broke NATO for what he could have got in a normal trade deal.

Art of the Deal, my hole.

is it true that this fcuk-wit got applause from some of the attendees when he concluded his diatribe….?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,301 ✭✭✭Mike Murdock

Yes, he did. He got more when he addressed the business executives later as well.

I would say too balanced in not criticising Trump enough.

I watch a toe curling interview with Mike Johnson a few weeks back where he was allowed spew lies and untruths totally unchallenged.

There wasn’t a glove laid on him and the smirk on his face said everything in how he couldn’t believe what a soft interview it was!

Carneys path is far more durable in the long run. Even if one or two of the middle powers goes mad, they lack the critical mass to destroy the whole edifice.

The current system is similar in that if any of the middle powers goes mad, damage can be contained. The flaw though is that it is dependent on the hegemon remaining stable, which we have found out not to be the case.

The drawback of this new world order is that it 1. Will be far more expensive for the middle powers and 2. Require explicit transfer of sovereignty to new collective bodies.

This crisis seems to have passed somewhat but the damage will be lasting. This was far worse than the first round of tariffs. I'm wondering if patience has finally run out among the sane in US establishment.

They are not simply "attendees". They are the elite and the wealthy that discuss our future. They must know best.

It's a disgusting forum in many ways.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

I absolutely love the Irish approach to global mayhem.

"Oh yes we must invest in defence to protect our national interests", proceeds to throw pocket change at it.

"We stand by our European neighbours and we unequivocally support their sovereignty" proceeds to buy time without commiting to any action.

This strategy has worked for so long, it's hard to argue with it. The "say nothing until we hear more" strategy. Spend nothing, try not to offend anyone, collect corporate taxes and attract maximum FDI ad infinitum. For how long can we get away with it? Every decade is like winning the lottery.

I would not trust Rutte as far as I could kick him after his licking Trumps ass.

He also had some very dodgy bed-fellows at various stages keeping him in power as far as I recall.

I found trumps comments weird about what a great guy Xi must be , after all he got 100% of the votes. Of course he did😁

I'm sure trump must be aching for such a vote of confidence for himself .

We really need to get off our hole. We need to invest in protecting our waters, up our armed forces and join eutopean joint exercises, we desperately need a radar system and we need to start training at least a reserve force that could provide some resistance were it ever needed.

I also hope this quietens the idiots who think we should leave the EU. If Britain is struggling outside of it, what do they think will happen to us.

If the Dems win the white house in 2028, I suspect they will be a considerable effort to send diplomats around the world for damage control and basically to reassure their allies that the adults are back in control. But if I were a diplomat in Europe or Canada, my reply to them would be what if there is a Republican president in 2032? Will America revert back to chaos and bullying? For America to really earn back the status it once had, it needs to prove to the world through multiple presidencies of both Dems and Republicans that Trumpism is firmly in the past. It really is a colossal amount of damage that Trump and his enablers have done to America.

Karoline Leavitt is some piece of work. In addition to denying that Trump mixed up Greenland and Iceland, she claimed Trump's speech had got rave reviews and had struck an inspirational tone. She has absolutely no problem in lying

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,285 ✭✭✭✭A Dub in Glasgo

That is no surprise as she has been lying constantly over the last year. She (and other Trump sycophants / supporters) will argue black is white and white is black.

I honestly don't know if it's worth it. We are so far behind, we probably need to be just very strategic with any spending. Like the strategy for invasion has to be immediate surrender followed by years of asymmetric resistance fighting because we certainly cannot defend ourselves conventionally. Perhaps investment in drones, tech, sabotage and an intelligence and covert communication network. We can only be an absolute pain in the arse to occupy. That would be an achievement.

I wouldn't meet them on anything less than an equal footing going forward. You want something, well you got to give us something. The day of the subordinate are over. You don't call the shots anymore.

Europe need to try to get Canada into the European tent as much as possible. They have far more in common with us than they do with the US. If theres one thing Europe lacks its natural resources. Had we Canada, Australia and Ukraine in the tent, theres very little we need outside that.
