One of PSG and Newcastle (both behind us in the top 8) can't surpass us as they play each other

They would struggle big style in the premiership

Wish we could play them every week

So much space given up...crazy stuff

Kerkez will get a lot of plaudits, and deservedly so. But I think Gomez was brilliant tonight, especially his line breaking passing in the first half. Frimpong deserves a shout too.

The new signings certainly are showing signs of having settled lately.

That's much more like it, nice to see us go for it and actually win by a comfortable margin for once. Please can we do this more consistently now.

So who starts Saturday? Or can Gomez with his injury record play consecutive games?

Wow, Atalanta were 3rd at half time and now 13th at full time.

Big swings could happen next week with the final games

any chance we could get a few signings? If we could I think it would help a ton.

Another away game, and on Saturday.

I think Gomez deserves it, but whether he gets the opportunity to, or whether the medical team allows him to, is another thing.

A win and we stay 4th. Our best position would be if Madrid draw or lose and we finish 3rd.

Crazy considering we got smashed at home 4-1 against PSV

Would love to see him start alright but as you said, the medical team might not allow it

The exertion on the body would be lower at CB rather than RB too.

Wirtz has 11 goals and assists??? How is that even possible? He didn't get his first till about a month ago!

Joe was very good tonight. He often needs a few games to get to the pace and then he's good, until he gets injured

Yup, they're both top 8 already though. I'm looking at non-top-8 sides that can break in above us and push us down the ladder if they won, pushing someone out of the top 8. There's 7 of them. Barca, Sporting, Man City, Atleti, Atalanta, Inter and Juve.

If we lose, we just have to hope that not too many of those other current top 8 sides leap frog us so we keep a bit of a buffer zone, and that not too many of those 7 sides get the wins they need to push us down.

All in all a good position though. Qarabag, even at Anfield, are tough as old boots, but we should still be winning. We might not have the luxury of resting too many though.

Great away win and leaves us in a very good position to remain in the top 8.

Very happy with the performance though, we looked a lot better from the front press and made it very difficult for Marseille to get out.

    Hopefully it's a turning point.

Richie talking about how Man City are in the top 8… he might want to check the table again 😂

It is a bit mad that 5 of the top 8 are English sides alright though - and 3 of 'em are from London!

I'm loving these Frimpong performances, with so little pace across the squad he's such a positive.

Credit where due. That 4-2-4 formation with Etikite and Salah wide worked really well, it helped that we were much quicker and braver on the counter too.

I know there is more to the game than pace but Christ does it remind you how Salah and Mane used to terrify

It's too late now btw but loving Harvey Barnes' work recently.

    Always rated him

Great win this evening. It's hard to work out were we good or were Marseille just shocking but either way I thought we looked more composed tonight.

Gomez, kerkez, gravy, sob, Hugo & Wirtz all played very well. Even Mac seems to be in better form the last few games. Great to be on the front foot again in a game. Theres enough signs the last two weeks to show we're starting to come slowly out of the funk long may it continue. Still big issues in the squad - CB is a huge concern.

Ps you'd forget how good Gomez is on his day. If only he could stay fit

Some good head to head games in last CL round

    City v Galatasaray

    PSG V Newcastle

    Napoli v Chelsea

    Dortmund v Inter

    Ajax v Olympiakos

To me the last few weeks have seen a trend heading towards a performance like this. Wirtz and Ekitike are building a good relationship. Frimpong and Kerkez are finally getting going properly. Even MacAllister and Konate have looked like footballers again.

But it comes with a big caveat! I don't believe our mental fragileness has gone away in that time. Burnley at the weekend was a perfect example. Should have been 3 up at half time, but obviously we weren't and then as soon as Burnley showed any intent, we looked meek.

I'm not here to have a go at them, as Ive said already, I've been impressed by some of the individual and team performances the last few weeks. But until this side can show that they can overcome adversity, I won't be getting too ahead of myself.

    The unbeaten run continues.

    13 games now.

For me the pressing was the most noticeable thing last night that I feel like I haven't seen in ages.

Good performance. Marseille, as bad as they were, had us hemmed in more than I'd like, but Van Dijk and Gomez were excellent.

The new signings seems to be settling, which is great to see.

Bournemouth will tell us more than last night, but it was lovely to watch a game pretty much stress-free.

It's probably the first time in a while we didn't play against a team sitting deep. It's a lot easier to press a team who are trying to play out from the back.

For instance, we struggled against Burnley, Wolves, Leeds etc... but swatted Aston Villa aside with ease.
