I’d forget about doing heifers for the first year and still get your Ai technician to do them until you build up your confidence. The most important thing to learn about Ai’ing is that you don’t need to get the gun the whole way through the cervix to get them in calf, it’s great if you can but not crucial imo. If you know the gun is more than half way let the stuff go, i did 20 cows here this year, didn’t feel the tip of the gun for any of them and only two repeated, the rest held, got them the second time. One of them came bulling a few weeks ago but she’s the oldest cow here so wasn’t too bothered.

They all came into heat shortly after. I know it was a success. One of them had twins, then again she has had 3 sets of twins and rejects one every time.

The following year I came on her licking a freshly calved calf and giving birth to another. I grabbed the calf and came back for her. Never copped until later that evening that the first calf wasn't her calf but had rolled in from the next pen. Like 'tales if the unexpected' she raised two calves that year.

I won't do bulling heifers myself i dont think. They are normally on an outfarm with a bull so not set up to AI them anyway. The one I couldn't get first time, I couldn't get it into the cervix at all. Dont like staying at them too long your only annoying yourself and the cow. When she repeated the gun just with straight in! Im doing them abit earlier aswell. I think this helps

Also will stay with conventional semen for the first year bar 5 red holstein sexed straws.

Anyone warm up the sheaths before loading the gun? I did it here for the last 2 times as the weather was very cold at the time.

Be careful Patsy. Too hot is worse than too cold.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,044 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

I warm the Sheath down inside my front clothes, against my skin.

Checking up on my due dates for the cattle. As I predicted 1st service was 55% (6/11; FTAI - 3, Natural - 3) and 2nd service was 40% (2/5; Natural - 2). The 3 that didn't hold are currently being fattened up for cull in the next few weeks.

I'm going to get a bolus for them too. This will probably be the last year of full AI here unless I get the holds to improve. As we are feeding the cattle with precalver minerals since housing I don't think that blood testing them will return any useful information. In my mind, they would need to be out at grass for a prolonged period to see how they are affected by the grass/soil conditions. Is this understanding correct?

In terms of bolus, I'm looking at Agrimax Tracesure, Agrimin All-Trace High Iodine and Agrimin 24/7 Smartrace Plus. Oligovet reproduction bolus was previously mentioned by I can't see any breakdown of it.

Do I need to do any sampling to determine the molybdenum and Copper levels? I've read not to give copper unless it has been determined to be low. The soil & silage samples we get don't give these figures.

Would suggest getting silage tested if you think you have copper issues, sulphur applications to grassland don't help the situation I think

Your conception rates are in normal range. 2nd service a bit disappointing but with small numbers 1 cow extra going in calf makes a big difference. There is a lot of factors outside minerals effecting cows going in calf.

There is some money wasted in ireland on boluses and expensive minerals. Largely driven by sales reps talking nonsense. Unless something definite comes back as a deficiency, I wouldn't be bothering with expensive boluses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,378 ✭✭✭visatorro

You could well be right about the bolus being a waste of time. Years ago I think everything was lacking here. Poor conception and poor calves, a few still born ones aswell. Threw topical iodine on the backs and using a bolus ever since. Would be afraid to go away from them tbh. Probably should blood test the cows but never did. Im go between all guard and cosicure. If your getting away fine all the better.

Iv 20 cows served now. First cow repeated after 62 days. Last 2 i AIed I know i didnt get them. Confidence would take a hit after handling a couple and you knowing they weren't done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,657 ✭✭✭tanko

When you say “didn’t get them” do you mean that you couldn’t get the gun into the cervix at all or couldn’t get it the whole way through??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,378 ✭✭✭visatorro

NOt getting the gun into the cervix. Can find it most of the time and feel the edge with the gun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,044 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

I feel you pain. I was the same. Felt like giving up completely. Once I got tru the cervix then one day within seconds of entering, I never looked back. It's a confidence thing as much as anything.

The first year can be tough, there’s no denying that but the only way to master it is to keep at it, when you get the hang of it you’ll do it without thinking about what you’re doing. If you change the angle of the cervix up a down and over and back while gently prodding the gun forward, it usually slips in. Is it possible for you to do the first serves (or ring them if you don’t get one on the day) and get an Ai tech to do repeats until you build your confidence??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,098 ✭✭✭limo_100

What you should do is get ai technician to serve them then when he’s gone use a different bull and serve them urself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,378 ✭✭✭visatorro

Doing the course I remember your man saying to grab the cervix basically. I can never really get my hand around the cervix. More pinching the top of it iykwim. The AI tech is a good lad but I just found the timing would never work for me because I was at the end of his area. Not his fault he can't be everywhere at once. Iv a good few gone over 21days so im doing something right.

Talking to another lad who reckons the collars pick them up too soon and its too early to serve a lot of the time. One today was standing heat all day, collar said she was fit to do this evening although she was still visibly on heat. Is it too early if she still mounting? I might try her again in the morning

Yeah confidence and patience i suppose. Did one last week and youd swear the cervix was an L shape. Im fairly sure i got into end but not through it. Be interesting to see if she holds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,378 ✭✭✭visatorro

The timing is the problem there. If I was doing that id probably do her first. Ill try avoid that if I can

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,044 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

It's very rare that I grab the cervix, I only really half grab it from the side. By pushing the cervix forward, you are not just straightening the cervix out, but you are also getting rid of any folds that may be stopping the gun going forward.

What I find good too when I'm getting frustrated and getting nowhere is, just stop completely, relax the left hand , take a few deep breaths and go again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,657 ✭✭✭tanko

if she was standing this morning, doing her this evening should be fine even if she’s still bulling.
Try to stay positive about it, you’re probably doing better than you think.
maybe keep a diary recording each insemination, how long they were standing, done “early” or “late” and how well you think you think each attempt went, I did this and found it useful and learnt from it

With the L shaped cervix, pull it and the gun towards you to straighten it out and you should be able to get the gun in further.
The most important thing I’ve learnt about Ai’ing cows is that you don’t need to get the gun he whole way through to get them in calf, if you feel you’re more than half way that works the best imo,

Some cervixs can have scar tissue from calving, sounds like you are doing great job. As patsy says streatchs the cervix forward to remove folds.

Well curiosity got the better of me and I went and bought another thermometer from Amazon, when I was getting a few other things.

I did a trial in water at around 35c and they both agree. I put both down my front and the most I could get was 29c. Now it was a cold day and I had just come in from being out.

I was be cold-blooded or something.

    Tweezers to take straws out

    Thermos flask to thaw straws

Sharp scissors to cut top of straws

A clock beside the flask to time how long to thaw straws

A thermometer that reads between 0 and 40 degrees,

    A pack of sheaths

An Ai gun or two, i find the Alpha gun and sheaths better than the standard gun and sheaths

A box of arm length gloves

    A bottle of lubricant

Any Ai company should supply the tweezers, Ai gun, sheaths, gloves, lubricant and thermometer
