I’d forget about doing heifers for the first year and still get your Ai technician to do them until you build up your confidence. The most important thing to learn about Ai’ing is that you don’t need to get the gun the whole way through the cervix to get them in calf, it’s great if you can but not crucial imo. If you know the gun is more than half way let the stuff go, i did 20 cows here this year, didn’t feel the tip of the gun for any of them and only two repeated, the rest held, got them the second time. One of them came bulling a few weeks ago but she’s the oldest cow here so wasn’t too bothered.

They all came into heat shortly after. I know it was a success. One of them had twins, then again she has had 3 sets of twins and rejects one every time.

The following year I came on her licking a freshly calved calf and giving birth to another. I grabbed the calf and came back for her. Never copped until later that evening that the first calf wasn't her calf but had rolled in from the next pen. Like 'tales if the unexpected' she raised two calves that year.

I won't do bulling heifers myself i dont think. They are normally on an outfarm with a bull so not set up to AI them anyway. The one I couldn't get first time, I couldn't get it into the cervix at all. Dont like staying at them too long your only annoying yourself and the cow. When she repeated the gun just with straight in! Im doing them abit earlier aswell. I think this helps

Also will stay with conventional semen for the first year bar 5 red holstein sexed straws.
