Is Inside Sport much different to Game On.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

So far, it seems so. Very small sample size. Due to angelus, bumper six news on one, and possibly more frequent and longer ad breaks, it's likely much shorter. Also it ended at half past and probably only 2-3 short segments yesterday on day 3, for a half hour radio documentary I think?

All a bit disjointed so far. Ad breaks kicking in during interviews on Monday and Tuesday. 25 minute program last night. They're on 6-7 this evening, then Arena for half an hour, then back for the football 7.30-10.00 which previously would have been on 2FM.

they really need to be able to put the sports commentary on a separate channel or frequency- because DaB didn’t take off in Ireland they can’t really do a proper Radio 1 extra station

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,062 ✭✭✭amlinopta

Rugby on Saturday night also on Radio One. Sport Extra 20.00-22.15.

Does this mean we can have Gabriel Egan back on radio commentary??!

Enjoy JK, but Gabriel Egan on a night like last night would have been sublime 🙂

They could put their Extra digital stations of Failte DAB. Or have retained their LW frequency. How much money did RTÉ really save by dropping DAB and LW, does anyone have a figure.

listened to the sport program on Friday, even with the soccer win and rugby international on it still seemed like the content was stretched thin. I don't really see that it works but it's early days.

Yesterday at around 5/6 there was nothing but sports on RTE and Newstalk etc. Ended up listening to BBC4 LW.

There's an hour of Callans Kicks on the Radio Player but it's the same show repeated one after the other 🤷‍♀️.

A few weeks in to the new schedule my instinct that Callan and McCullough's shows are the wrong way around holds true. I miss the lighter format of Callan's show as a pallete cleanser between Morning Ireland and Today.

yea but they are waiting for Pat Kenny to give way to Claire Byrne on Newstalk and then they regain his listeners

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Did they really see them go?

One thing I would say about Irish Radio is that there are no really distinctive voices.

I don't think we will ever really hear the likes of Joe Duffy, Gay Byrne, Marion Finucane, Ivan Yates, George Hook or Eamon Dunphy.

Bar Moncreiff they are all aping Pat Kenny in their approach to presentation.

This is one reason why Claire Byrne could be Claire Brock, or Ciaran Cuddihy could be Cormac Ó hEadhra.

I think I’d be able to tell Clare Byrne and Pat Kenny apart and I don’t just mean because one is a woman and one is a man. One will be very superficial the other details oriented

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,310 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

I really hope Claire doesn't have the same format of show as she did on Radio 1. I've moved to Newstalk since the changes and I'm happy enough with it so far. Just getting used to the new voices etc. A lot of the same guests, Dundon, Bannon etc though.

In fairness Ciara Kelly has some bite to her, and Andrea Gillian is not a great presenter, but both are largely as bland as Claire, and she follows …. Anton Savage!

    Paint drying IMO.

I think Anton Savage has a good bit of bite to him. His announcement as the new breakfast presenter on Newstalk was the only interesting thing about their reshuffle. I really enjoyed his weekend show.

Lookit lads…..would ye ever get a grip

What’s happening at Rte is they are trying to shift the listening audience age profile back to around 35 ish.

Why else would they drag in overlong interviews ridden to death on vacuous subjects on so called ‘Current affairs’ themed programmes. Happening on every so called ‘serious’ show lads.

Bring in some no name tosser from some obscure genre and listen to horsesheet for 20 minutes.

    That’s what’s happening…..you know it…….. I know it……..it’s Monaghan what done it.

If you happen to get into a high level discussion about pay with RTÉ is not it should go

RTÉ: We like to offer you more money than you are worth for the next 5 years and we also will give you a bonus at the end

You: That's not enough, I was thinking more along the lines of this.

RTÉ: Oh we couldn't afford that, let us think on it

    A few weeks later

RTÉ: We have an idea, basically we agree you are worth more that what we think your worth which is actually more than you are worth, so what we will do is get you a gig with one of our advertisers and in this way you can take what you suggested you are worth.

You: Oh! I don't know I'd question if that is right.

RTÉ: You might be right and we will take note of it that you have questioned this, but we believe it to be quite normal in the industry.

You: Okay, I will go along with this.

RTÉ: Also here are the last 3 years of pay which are incorrect but we are going to publish them anyway.

You: Oh yes you publish them, they look lower that what I received but I won't question that or say anything.

RTÉ: Cool aren't we the best public service broadcaster in the world

You: Oh! yes and you not only thrifty but you pay really good money.

    How it should work

RTÉ: So we believe you are worth this amount

    You: I disagree

RTÉ: Oh! have you had other offers

    You: Yes

RTÉ: Sorry to see you go we will develop others and look forward to working with you in the future.

    The End.

New Washington correspondent announced - Jackie Fox, taking up the post in March. No doubt interested parties will be asking what Sean Whelan will do next

I read he's due to return to the newsroom in Dublin

Has RTE's Washington correspondent ever been allowed in the press room in the White House?

It looks like all they do is listen to whatever is said on CNN and repeat it on RTE bulletins.

only the Mr Pillow network and NewsMax are allowed in now. We saw what happened to Niall Stanage

They had a Spanish reporter in there yesterday.

Just don't see point of a Washington correspondent based in Washington when they can do the job from Dublin.
