The mid terms in America are so important this year. Anything less than a comprehensive democratic victory will further empower Trump and his administration and quite frankly be a sign that America is a lost cause. I'm still hopeful there are enough decent Americans willing to stand up against this but if they don't come out in Nov in large numbers it will be extremely dangerous for the world.

It's almost a given that the Democrats will retake the House, but it seems highly unlikely the Dems can retake the Senate given the electoral map.

The fact that every Republican up for re-election won't be booted out of the Senate in shame is testament to just how broken the country is, from the supposed institutions to the very social contract itself.

(Oh, and never forget most Dems' inability to rise to the moment).

Trump's polls are sinking. 75% of Americans don't agree with taking over Greenland. Pretty sure it would be tough to get 75% of Americans to agree on anything at the moment. The GOP know they will get a hammering in the mid-terms. I wonder if there are any discussions internally about dumping trump and taking their chances with President Vance. 6 months ago I would have said that is unlikely but he us truely off the rails now.

Don't expect him to know anything about that. He is ignorant of pretty much everything outside his own ego, and where his next Big Mac is coming from.

The Republicans are going to try and nuke the mid-terms by creating so much chaos with the likes of ice in blue states that Trump will use the insurrection act and say the mid-terms cannot be held

Melania has a long list of owners if you’re going by who landed first. Trump annexed her from Epstein.

In lighter Melania news, apparently absolutely nobody is going to that movie. 😂 Estimated box office is 1-2 million dollars, wasn't even getting turnouts in red states.

Have to agree with you. All of the left wing bright thinkers rushing to meme-ify the GOP and make jokes about rednecks. It's not funny and trying to be funny about a roaring dumpster fire is really not what's needed right now and for the last 10 years. I don't care if Americans voted for Trump or not, it's clear that they just don't care enough about their country or fellow citizens to try and understand the opposition. The status quo clearly suits enough people who should know better. It's everyone's fault there.

The GOP Congress members are too afraid of Trump to consider anything like that, unfortunately. Anyone with even a shred of spine in that party should realise that the 25th Amendment is well overdue, but it'll never happen because they're too keen on keeping their heads down and kissing the ring. They are a truly shameful bunch.

What they should really do, if they are so afraid of Trump, is resign in droves to then create a Democratic majority and allow impeachment proceedings (again) to go through. Obviously they won't do that either but they do have options.

The Board of Peace sounds like a slush fund to me. More like "Board of Piece".

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to join US President Donald Trump's "Board of Peace" meant to oversee governance and reconstruction in postwar Gaza, the Kremlin said Monday.

This is what’s most frustrating about America. The democrats and media should non stop mock him over this, make him out to be the biggest spoilt snowflake baby to ever walk relentlessly non stop. That’s how you break that you idiot. They still haven’t figured this out after 50 years. They’re almost more thick than him for that.

I'm not sure if it will open today (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day).

According to Sky News, investors have started the day buying safe stocks e.g. gold, silver & copper - apparently gold and silver are not at all time highs.

Apparently many Republicans have been telling their staff in private that Trump is deranged and not fit for office, but in public state their allegiance to him. They are cowards of the worst order.

Europe has to show a our of balls this time. Disappointed with MM calling fir restraint. It should be one in all in as in GAA parlance. He has been breaking the last agreement continually throwing extra Tarriffs on different products. If he wants an economic war give him one. He going to fook up the world economy with his interest plans anyway

Dementia Don is the fascist leader of the US MAGA cult, who equally fear and worship him into exalted power, power he uses for unchecked criminality.

Madness to think that the US could descent that quickly into total madness. He's managed to completely turn it into a rogue basket case of a sh!thole in less than a year. China must be laughing their holes off, the US arguably destroyed for the next 20 years internationally, and China didn't have to spend a penny to do it.

It's been a total disaster for the US.

What's incredible is that there's people that still rabidly support this. And that's why we need to uncouple from the US as quick as we can, because Trump is only the start of it. There's way too much support there for this to be a fleeting thing, this has massive support in the US. Despite what the polls say on individual issues, half of the country is behind him and his carry on, and they have no intention of letting go the power, and will retain it by whatever means are necessary.

This last year is a glimpse into the future of dealing with America, because it's no longer America anymore, it's MAGAstan. The lunatics are in control of the bus, they see the cliff and have started putting the foot on the accelerator because they're convinced the bus will fly. Jumping off the bus will hurt, but it's better than going over the cliff with lunatics.

Time for Europe to push them aside. Take the pain now. That'll mean a fair bit of pain, but solid planning for the absolute worst, and we'll get through it.

That's been the case for years though, even through the first administration. They literally lack a single bit of courage. Anyone that actually showed any courage was primaried (Kinzinger, Cheney as examples) so clearly they value their jobs more than they value the well-being of the country and the world. Despicable people.

I managed to have a Trump free weekend and I would recommend it. Catching up this morning and I am also very curious how the markets react to the new EU tariff threat. I think the probability of a military invasion/takeover of Greenland is even further diminished by this pivot to tariffs to get what he wants. I cannot even remember now but I am puzzled that his first tariff on Feb 1 (10%) is so low - weren't his "reciprocal" tariffs last year much higher than that? I seem to recall China getting 100% or some such. I know he chickened out on a lot of the details on the infamous and very confusing tariff table following bond market reactions but 10% seems low as an initial threat for negotiation tactics. It reminded me of the 1 million dollars demand in Austin Powers. The June 25% tariff is such a long way away too which suggest his sense of urgency is diminishing. It's hard reading between the lines on this clown. I love that Vance got to go to Thule Air Base in mid January. A nice -15C should give him a much needed reality check on life.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

January 6th rioter Jake Lang, who was pardoned by Trump, was chased away when he started an pro-ICE protest in Minneapolis.

It seems to me that part of the reason America is such a powerful world power in economic and military terms is because Europe served as a large wealthy market place.

Most American presidents saw that as a good thing and could see that Europe as a strong partner in trade was beneficial.

I know a trade war will be devastating for Ireland but our future has to be with Europe. Even wit a new administration America cannot be trusted in the same way.

I know this will be unpopular but in this new reality neutrality may not be an option going forward.

Time to follow China's lead and match his tarrifs, he piped down pretty quickly when China put it up to him. Also needs to target the tech bros specifically with X, meta and Amazon particularly focussed on, end all official EU and governmental communications on X and levy a digital tax and levy an environmental tax on Amazon. I presume Starmer will fold under pressure of tarrifs but the EU should take up this fight like this is the redline.

It's unremarkable that, apart from the lack of a mask, he's dressed in a faux manner, similar to the ICE street agents.

I think our values are more in line with Europe but also with the Democratic Party in the US and the tiny number of moderate Republicans.

The dilemma is that many Irish Americans now vote the way White people as a whole tend to i.e. Republicans. If you look at some of the names of people implementing Trump's immigration policies, you see Irish names like McLaughlin.

Hard to believe that in the past 10 or so years, Trump and his backers have spent every waking minute being absolute cu&ts!!!!! Every waking minute deliberately creating division and hostility and aggro.

EU says current freeze on €93bn retaliation measures against US lapses on 6 Feb, could see new US tariffs kick in next day

The EU’s Gill also offers a bit more detail on the EU’s potential move to retaliate against the US, unfreezing the €93bn package adopted during the summer and which was paused after the EU-US deal in Scotland.

He says the suspension of the package lapses on 6th February, and that is “automatic.”

“Unless the commission, in consultation with member states via the usual comitology, procedure, take steps to extend the suspension, the suspension ends and the measures kick in on the 7th February.”

He says there has been “no decision” on this either way as leaders consult on next steps, but that’s the process.

He adds that the focus is on avoiding an escalation and finding a solution that works for all involved.

“If I was to summarise what the Commission wants to achieve here: we want to make sure that the maximum amount of EU unity and solidarity is maintained so that we are in the strongest possible position to achieve the outcomes.”

I see these doing the rounds every so often and I have to disagree.

I think the simper explanation is the correct one, ie that Trump and the Republican party are just plain evil. They don't need to be coerced or otherwise induced into doing what they're doing. Remember, this is the party that ensures that school shootings remain a regular occurrence and has had no end of nonce-related scandals. They can't win democratically so they've spent decades gaslighting the public and rigging the system into the abomination it is now.

    As for Trump, well…

Problem is, they'll answer a poll but they won't bother their hole to vote. So it'll still be a close run thing come election and then you add in the stupid electoral college and gerrymandering, and its still a toss up. And thats before you get to vote rigging or suppression.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

Every member has one vote- but all decisions must be sanctioned by Trump 😂😂😂😂😂

You really couldn’t make this up - as I said earlier it’s beyond parody - and the billions paid by countries to participate will simply flow into Trumps accounts - but he’ll be dead or even more senile than he is right now long before any auditors arrive to inspect the accounts so he doesn’t give a sh1t- the most dangerous president is the one who doesn’t care about consequences - he’ll never see a day in jail - he’ll never be convicted - he’s nothing to lose at this stage
