A try that looked specifically designed to take advantage of Ringrose's tendency to shoot up in his "system". 3 yrs in and the defense remains massively vulnerable against smart attacking teams.

For me it's a loss of leadership over the past few seasons that's contributing most to the regression in Irish rugby. Yes we probably hung on players too long but Sexton, Murray, POM and Healy were proper leaders. The next generation are yet to step up in that regard. Those guys set the standard and kept it up, the next generation don't yet seem to have that same drive or sheer will to win.

I’d never back against Ireland but France -7 in the spread is a license to print money. That’s going to get ugly.

Zac Ward looked like a sevens player today. All over the shop. Needs to improve a bit with the decision making. He has all the other attributes to make an international player.

Ireland don't lose badly very often, but it doesn't look great alright.

I think we are going to need to just go 6/2 and hope for the best.

    1. Boyle
    2. Sheehan
    3. Furlong/Clarkson
    4. Ryan
    5. McCarthy
    6. Beirne
    7. Van der Flier
    8. Doris
    9. Gibson-Park
    10. Prendergast
    11. Stockdale
    12. McCloskey
    13. Ringrose
    14. Ward/Kenny
    15. Keenan (pray jebus)
    16. Kelleher
    17. Milne
    18. Clarkson/Bealham
    19. Edogbo
    20. Conan
    21. Prendergast
    22. Casey
    23. Crowley

Went off injured and no one looked happy about it. If he is fit I think he starts.

    Missed that....in mourning from Thomond😪

Hope he stays injury free...he's had rotten luck

Watched the 3 games yesterday and am getting more concerned by the day on half backs quality and lack of depth. JGP is the only top quality in both positions. Crowley’s lack of game management and poor kicking is now deeply concerning and he is putting himself out of contention. Coming from someone who has had high hopes and expectations. Neither Sam not Harry are at that top level either but both have the potential to shape a game IF in form. But again lacking consistency. And no depth behind that at age group that is Aus 27 relevant. At 9 it’s as concerning as were an injury away from a crisis. Without JGP we are a very mediocre team given the 10 transition phase dilemma. Watching JGP having just watched Doak was like going up 5 grade levels, entirely different planets. And whilst Casey did really well in places as the number 2 option he is still a long way away in rugby brain / instinct & execution. Still a lot of rugby to play before RWC and a 6N which will be both a challenge and hopefully constructive to future selection decisions to create depth where it’s badly needed. Farrell gets a lot of grief on the selection piece but I don’t envy him right now and with the exception of Leinster the other 3 provinces aren’t giving many alternatives beyond the first choice as the bench in most bases is weak

McCloskey, Edogbo, Ward brothers , JJ all in contention for selection and we’ll deservedly so

Casey had a brilliant game yesterday, more so when you consider the injury he was carrying and the treatment he got from Castres, every time he got the opportunity for a late hit, they took it.

fair and a clear Irish #2 but a mile apart in my opinion especially as he is in a sweet spot age & experience wise hitting 27 in April. JGP at 33 is a top 3 worldwide whereas Casey would struggle to make a top 10 list

Presuming Furlong and Bealham don't make it back it looks like it's Boyle and Clarkson to start against France in a few weeks time. Not the prop combo anyone would have expected, but I'm hopeful we'll be ok.

Clarkson faced big French packs in successive games and won the scrum battle in both. Played 80 minutes and 65 minutes respectively so we know he has great cardio to go long into a match if needed. Boyle was usurped by McCarthy recently but is a big talent in his own right. Looked very good against Bayonne yesterday. Scrummaged well and carried like he was shot from a cannon.

That could be true but JGP form is dipping and with age you'd hope it doesn't drop off a cliff.

Without restarting a discussion from earlier in the week Farrell really should be giving Casey more time than he has, it gives Casey a bit more experience and it gives JGP a bit of a rest

JGP was man of the match for Leinster in a big interpro win a couple of weeks ago, and was largely excellent last week against LAR too.

    When is the squad announced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,300 ✭✭✭TRC10

Just look at the November squad. And the 6N squad from last year. And the November squad from 2024. That’s the squad

Also, it's really disappointing that neither Ahern or Izuchukwu have really kicked on in recent months. In the absence of Baird, I was hoping one of them would really push to make that blindside berth their own.

As it stands, we're probably looking at Beirne or Conan to start there for the Six Nations with Timoney or Prendergast taking the bench spot.

Midi Olympique is reporting that Ntamack will miss Frances opening Six Nations fixtures.

That probably leaves us facing either Ramos or Jalibert which isn't great for us either. But far more preferably to coming up against the Dupont/Ntamack axis.

McCloskey is more than in contention I'd say. 100% locked in starting 12.

Izuchukwu was injured for a while, before and after he's continued to impress

    Wrong thread

If Edogbo doesn’t travel ahead of Iain Henderson it will be Farrell’s biggest selection mistake of all time

With the squad named this week, going to give a prediction a go on who I think will be named. Assumption that only Keenan gets back from the currant injury list and named how I see them in the pecking order in their position:

    Boyle, Loughman, Milne

    Sheehan, Kelleher, Stewart

    Clarkson, Furlong, O’Toole

McCarthy, Ryan, Edogbo, Izuchukwu, Murray maybe? No idea on that final spot

Beirne, JVDF, Doris, Conan, Timoney, Ward, Prendergast/Deegan

    Gibson-Park, Doak, Casey

    Prendergast, Byrne, Crowley

McCloskey, Ringrose, Postlethwaite, Farrell/Hume (toss up, possibly Hume due to age)

Ward, Keenan, TOB, Kenny, Stockdale, 1 of Lowe/Baloucoune/JOB/Frawley

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,040 ✭✭✭johnh6767

Casey is well ahead of Doak really no contest there, speaking as an old historic substandard 9 ! 10 shirt you need to assess match by match as each game determines a new leader. Lots of competition for wings, centre & props but that’s been much debated!

That looshead depth chart is seriously bleak. Scrum is going to get decimated against France and England. And the other areas of our game are nowhere near good enough to compensate for it
