Which sounded preposterous at the time Musk first claimed it. Or visionary. Depending on one's view of life…

Time will tell but my bank account says it could do with a free couple hundred quid a day every day, going forward 😁

Sorry folks, back to the virtue signalling if you don't mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 274 ✭✭evftw

I have some members blocked so probably missing all the fun here. But I'll virtue signal:

Isn't it great we have an industrialist like Musk around that has helped to bring environmentally sound and safe cars in the mainstream. And his company is now about to make an even bigger push in EU to better the road safety in form of FSD having already introduced some of the safest vehicles on the market whose safety also improves with faultless and frequent over the air updates.

Tesla are also amongst the only vehicles that don't mandate forced service schedules and help the right to repair by opening all the repair procedures to the public. They also allow integrating used electric modules without one time coding of those potentially saving the owners thousands in repair costs. Not that many repairs are required anyway, and when they are can often sorted out on your own drive.

The 8 year battery warranty also covers all of the main drivetrain components like the inverters and motor units, and all of this without mandated yearly services. And all of this is available from 33k brand new with a suitable NCT'd banger.

Tesla are a deliberate disrupter and always will be as they simply carve their path ignoring everyone else and the rest end up following

Model 3 at under €33k on the road is less than the price of the cheapest ICE Toyota Corolla or Skoda Octavia. And a far lower total cost of ownership too

It's not available at that price unless you have a fairly worthless yoke to trade in.

Have they said if advanced autopilot will become a subscription? I'm often tempted to go for this, but I simply can't afford it. I find it really irritating having to drop in and out of AP to change lanes.

A subscription would suit me tbh. You can cancel temporarily or permanently and it's not taken off you when you sell the car.

And until then a third party commander will sort us out.

    Tell me more.

    Edit: Found it.

How do you find it? Its not quite the same, literally saves you a button press which is not much.

    Not heard anything.
    But.

When you know you’re doing a long trip. Buy EAP that morning. Update car.
    Use it for the trip.
cancel it within the 24 hours (it may actually be 48 hours so confirm this).
    get money back.

Then at least you’ve tried it for free and you’ll know if it’s worth it for you.

You can buy one with NCT for €500 very easily. It only has to be in your name. No requirement it has to be in your name for at least a certain period like we have seen with other scrappage schemes in the past. So yeah the cost on the road is €33.4k

Consider adding a S3XY COMMANDER. There is a setting that you can use which lets you change lanes and AP re-engages. I have it as standard on my MYJ. You simply indicate, change lane and at some point, tap the accelerator rather than the brake (which would cancel re-engagement) and then after a pre-defined number of seconds, AP comes back on.

EAP is a little different and more convenient, but at a much higher cost. I have it on the MS. You still have to indicate, but the car changes lane for you (if safe). If I had EAP on my MYJ, I would still have many uses for the COMMANDER.

A €500 car with an NCT that’s actually driving isn’t that plentiful anymore. Most of them on DD at that sort of money are either already out of test or have a valid NCT but aren’t driving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,766 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Surely you'd find one if you looked for a few days on DD / adverts / FB markeplace. It barely needs to drive, just needs to have a valid NCT

Hey Unkel, maybe a silly question but in your informed opinion - How long before the car is driving us around on it's own(from the pub, yes) do you think?(Would obviously need new government legislation).🤔

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,766 ✭✭✭✭unkel

In Ireland? And L4/L5 autonomous driving so the car / OEM is responsible, not the driver so you could be drunk and asleep on the back seat while your car drives you home from the pub? 😀

Very hard to say. Let's wait first until the RDW ruling next month. I would be delighted if this year the cars are allowed to fully drive themselves with the driver still responsible at all times…

In the USA? Has already happened with unmanned Teslas now driving around, so with Tesla being responsible

Just had a quick look. DoneDeal is a pain in the hole with all those cars advertised at €0 or €123 or a figure that you have to multiply by 10 🙄

Lots on FB marketplace though. I'd be confident I'd pick one up for €200-300, so basically making the Model 3 a €33k on the road car. Not a bad colour that grey either. Might take the missus for a test drive next week

apparently Elon tweeted that fsd would no longer be available to buy after Feb 14th. Part of his contract includes a lot of fsd subscriptions.

Unless you're fortunate to be buying with cash, I'm not sure how great the booster is. You don't get to use Tesla finance @1%. External finance is anywhere from 4-9%.

You wouldn't be long paying a few grand in interest on a 20 grand loan. Years ago I was burnt on 5% interest car loan. Between that and depreciation it cost plenty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,194 ✭✭✭joe1303l

Yes, I had already looked on DoneDeal and came up with zero. Even up at €1000, many of them would need a trailer. Fake priced ads €123 etc. caused by their silly pricing mechanism is a total pain. I can’t comment on FB marketplace as I don’t use it. The search function appears to be worse than useless. Tesla may have been better off to just discount the car by €3500. It would help get a foothold with fleet sales here. It’s a significant portion of new car sales that they’ve never managed to get much of a share.

Hitting 10 million FSD users is one part of his bonus requirements, not sure if it's clear over what timeframe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 10,643 ✭✭✭✭893bet

Subscription prob better option? Unless the buy options started to “follow the driver” when they change their car. Having this type of model to follow the driver would help lock people into a “brand” like Apple do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,766 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Agree with all of that. FB marketplace is a cesspit, but needs must. If you want a €200-300 NCTd car, it's the only place worth looking now

It depends on how long you plan to keep the car. You'd want to be keeping it 7 years and many people don't do that. I plan to keep mine long term, but I don't know how many years. There's also the possibility that the car could be stolen, or written off and good luck getting the insurance company to pay back for FSD.

If I could transfer FSD with me to a new (or better still, a new to me) Tesla, then I would be paying it today, as I expect it to be available in Ireland in the near enough future; 2027/28. Prior to roll-out, i'd be making do with EAP+ functionality.

The issue with the sub model, is the price can and is likely to increase. I prefer if I can buy once and own the product.

You can transfer FSD to a new car in Ireland for free. At least you could a few months ago. Only brand new bought from Tesla though.

At the moment, you can, but it's not baked in. If I want to change cars in 3 years time and buy a new one, the transfer program the operate (which isn't the default) could be gone. Considering how quickly Tesla chop and change, I wouldn't be confident that if I bought it today, I could move it 6 months from now. What would give me confidence is a written condition at time of purchase, that I could transfer to a new Tesla vehicle at any stage in the future, or even if it were a guaranteed, but limited 10 or 15 year timeframe.

For sure. It has only been allowed in Ireland a few times for brief periods. With terms and conditions. Nobody knows if will ever be allowed again.
