    More than likely

He could have been our CB for 6-8 years.

Very disappointed when this didn't happen during the summer.

    Home grown and premiership proven.

Total balls up. Should have been him rather than Isak

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,194 ✭✭✭giveitholly

He was wearing a liverpool shirt ready for the official announcement until Parrish pulled the plug at the last second, what more could the club of done? Now some people/posters say if we were willing to pay a bigger transfer fee at the start of the summer we would of got him,i have yet to see any concrete evidence of this.

    Maybe, maybe not.

We had this one pretty much in the bag only 5 months ago.

You would imagine before we got as far as we did in August that all due diligence was done, Guehi was deemed more than good enough to play for the club. Wages and everything sorted, given how late in the day this fell apart. Agreeing a contract now would surely be straightforward, since we'd already done it.

All that has changed since August is our desperation for a CB has increased.

So my question is why wasn't this one wrapped up within a few days of the window opening?

Our transfers are as pedestrian as our football.

I agree with most of what you say but maybe Guehi's circumstances changed,he probably knew that city were interested in him and would offer bigger wages,so was never going to sign for us this month regardless. Hughes/Edwards have had a really bad 4/5 months imo and it could bite us by missing out on champions league football for next season.

It was being talked about in public that for the last however many days that it looked like City were going to sign him - that is what is known in public. I imagine behind the scenes at Palace/City it was much further advanced, we also have absolutely no insight into the wages.

From the Liverpool perspective in the summer, everything was over the line, it was last minute internal nonsense at Palace that scuppered it, Liverpool had absolutely zero control in any of that.

It's a pity, he would have been a huge addition, but that's it.

We are possibly/likely on the tailend of one of the best decades this club has ever had, with by our standards insane signing (including the most outrageous summer window in our history), I cannot fathom the entitled set of fans that have come along with that - just because we've had an incredible decade on and off the field does not mean that can or will continue without any hiccups at all. Completely over the top reaction to a mediocre start to a season with a fairly new team, and a major transfer target being missed while buying 6 other major targets (2 of which are out for most of the season with fairly extreme injuries.

    TL;DR: get a grip?

This "entitled" stuff is honestly mortifying. Please stop.

We are allowed to be disappointed and frustrated at what has happened, on and off the field. We spent years/decades as a team that struggled to meet the highest standards, and we finally sorted ourselves out and got back to where the club should be.

This year we are looking like a club going backwards, slipping back into our old ways and you're here calling anyone frustrated at this "entitled". Bizarre, small time thinking.

This is a fans forum to talk about the good and the bad, it is not just about trying to show yourself to be the biggest, loudest, pom-pom waving superfan.

Another thing we will never know,If Guehi moved next summer he would get a large signing on fee because he would be a free agent. I would be very surprised if Guehi doesn't have a bank account somewhere with a lump sum gone into it to cover this fee.

what more could the club of done?

They could have ensured we got him this January. There was speculation he would wait until the summer when a transfer would be more lucrative for him - that has been proven false.

    Couldn't agree more.

All the talk at the end of last season was building on a position of strength.

We signed one of the most sought after players globally in Wirtz.

My worry now is we just don't look like that attractive an option for players anymore, and we have gone backwards.

Can we just buy a City defender then?

They're adding Guéhi to Rúben Dias, John Stones, Joško Gvardiol, Nathan Aké, Manuel Akanji, and Abdukodir Khusanov as centre halves having recently recalled Max Alleyne halfway through his loan to also play there and Pep having made Kaden Braithwaite his youngest ever City player to play a competitive game (another highly rated CB)

I know they have injuries and the latter 2 are kids, but it's not an area they seemed stuck for

    Absolute fúcking negligence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,194 ✭✭✭giveitholly

How do you ensure we get him if we can't match the wages City are offering or if City have given Guehi a large signing on fee that no one will know about?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,194 ✭✭✭giveitholly

Even though we spent 450m,we also sold 250m worth of players. We actually numberwise have a smaller squad this season than last. We needed another centrehalf and proper no 6 last summer imo. Hughes/Edwards have a lot to answer in this regard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,901 ✭✭✭McFly85

The reaction is OTT - calling for Slot or Edwards to go on the back of this? C’mon. Accusing the club of slipping back into the old ways after we had a massive summer?

We missed out on Guehi due to a bizarre set of circumstances. It’s disappointing but it is what it is. Who knows how long City have been courting him.

We absolutely need 2 CBs, ahead of next season, and preferably one of those in Jan, but I don’t think it’s the end of the world if we don’t get one. Should still hopefully have enough quality to get a CL place and go again next year.

    20 million…I could cry

He has a chance this season of winning a possible quadruple with City.

Only 6 points behind Arsenal in January and adding Semenyo and Guehi.

It's going to be an interesting second half of the season to see if Arsenal bottle it again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,194 ✭✭✭giveitholly

That we know of,plus wages and no doubt a signing on fee

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,442 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Honestly, I'd only be annoyed if we don't sign a CB.

Liverpool signing a CB is more important than where Guehi goes to or who City buy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,455 ✭✭✭jones

Really cannot understand our reluctance to try get a CB in this window. City have now spent big two January's in a row and we've sat still so far when in dire need of a CB. We're a Konate/VD injury away from not making top 4 IMO (i know its most likely top 5 getting Champions league but we cant rely on that).

Considering we'd done 90% of the groundwork on Guehi in the summer it seems kinda mad that we walked away in January claiming we're waiting until the summer as if we're awash with CBs. Maybe once City entered the race to sign him Guehi's head was turned but he seems like the kind of guy who keeps his word from what i've seen. To my eyes it looks like we walked away or at the very least didnt chase him as much as city did.

Guehi's brother will probably be given part ownership in another football club tomorrow

Yea, you seem fairly upset about the entitled word.

Nobody has to be a superfan, nobody is not allowed to have their feelings - I'm sorry you felt like that was being impinged upon.

Anyway, there is no world in which we get everything right. I personally think anyone expecting that fits the description of entitled - I'm happy to park that word there.

By all accounts we did everything reasonably possible in one transfer window to set this club right, RB, LB, Young CB (who seems **** great btw, might not work out like that), AM, 2 seemingly world class center forwards (who it never gets mentioned because it's convenient do a lot of their best work coming from wide positions. With the only caveat at the end of the window being that it was a massive disappointment not to get Guehi in, but hands were essentially tied.

It is impossible to live up to the expectations of some here, the club may end up going backwards, you might be right, this might be terminal decline. It also might be the low point of transition, and we may be competitive again for the next few seasons, we don't know. The lack of patience to me is staggering, I also do find it bizarre that we are not looking for another CB, ideally one who could slot in now somewhat, and be athletic enough to deputise at full back ideally.

  • Administrators Posts: 56,309 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Absolutely nobody is talking about getting everything right, those expressing frustration at how this season has gone are not demanding absolute perfection.

I think most people can recognise there is a place between absolute perfection and how poor we have been this year. The whole "transition" nonsense was debunked long ago, it's January and in reality we are no better than we were in August. There has been no meaningful progress in any way.

It is impossible to live up to the expectations of some here

This is absolutely false and completely invented by you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,102 ✭✭✭antimatterx

300K a week. Yeah fair enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,333 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

i get you, but it's kinda not the point.

City need, City get it done. We needed, we didn't. And we needed it before injuries. They literally just decided that they needed a CB.

it's a sign of poor squad planning, which is why I call it negligent.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 9,804 Mod ✭✭✭✭mayordenis

Firstly I was speaking about the transfers in terms of perfection, because I think bar Guehi the consensus across the board, was that Liverpool had an outrageously strong summer. In hindsight we have 2 now glaring omissions: a wide attacker with pace that Slot will actually use, and a CB.

It is completely self evident that there is plenty of grey area in terms of results and performance that exists between perfection and what we have seen this season thus far. From my perspective, you are supporting my position, that expectations cannot be kept up with, as you have dismissed transition (frankly saying it is debunked is actual pure nonsense) because we aren't firing on all cylinders by January, again it's a perspective, I'm not saying I'm wholly right but a summer with say 7 outgoings and a death, and 6 incomings all in the first 11/match day squad, is always going to take time, less or more than up until now? Can't say.

Your last line 'This is absolutely false and completely invented by you.' is strange, it is neither provable nor unprovable by either of us, if I said we were brilliant all season and are 3rd in the league table, you can call that false and made up, if I say there are expectations that I think are impossible to live up to, it is weird to say it's false and made up, I might be wrong.

Don’t think there’s any point comparing us with City. They will spend freely and never seem to have to worry about balancing the books. Any player that doesn’t work out can sit on the bench, not going to stop them spending in future.

Under FSG we’ve always been a bit more measured, because it’s important that the club runs under its own steam. I’m sure the club has targets and will weigh up the pros and cons of going now or going in the summer. It has been frustrating at times because it seems slow to improve the squad but generally it has worked incredibly well for us.

300k a week for 5 and a half years? 86 million pounds in wages? Plus whatever under the table bonuses were agreed?

I'm happy to let this one pass, but at some point this has to come back on city right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,195 ✭✭✭dogbert27

There was talk in 24 that Marmoush only wanted to sign for Liverpool.

City bought him for 50 million in Jan 25. He's scored 9 goals in total with only 1 since May.

Not working, City go and buy Semenyo because they can. They don't have to work with developing a player like for example we had to do with Nunez.

Gvardiol gets an injury, they go and get Guehi.

City's spending in the last 3 transfer windows would suggest they believe they're not going to be hit with 115 charges

Is it negligent if we sign a different CB this window?
