I expect that when more bulk RVMs are installed most of these type of users will go to them and take the pressure off the standard machines.

Panda Recycling increased its bin charges for customers in North Dublin in early 2025. The increases included the half-yearly service charge, the general waste per-lift price, and the recycling per-lift price. Details of the Price Increases (effective early 2025)

    • Half-yearly service charge: Increased from €67.50 to €70. This change took effect in early February 2025.
    • General waste (black bin) per-lift price: Increased from €11.75 to €13.50, a jump of nearly 15%.
    • Recycling (green bin) per-lift cost: Increased from €1 to €1.25, a jump of 25%.

Brown bin (compost) charges: There were no increases to brown bin charges announced at this time.

Another poster who tells me that my bin charges have increased despite paying basically the same amount for the past 2 years.

Screenshots of bills were posted by myself some time ago, you’re welcome to find them for yourself.

If they were bold enough to seek extra payment they should be able to justify it.

If you have managed to increase your own recycling and reduce your waste, it is possible that your bin charges have gone down, despite the nominal increases. Those who complain most about bin charges are usually those who put every bin out every week.

No haven't really changed our usage, if anything our waste has increased due to non biodegradable cat litter.

Black (waste) bin goes out once every 3 weeks, green (recycling) bin about the same and brown (compost) sporadically.

I'm guessing your black bin contents go to incineration, not landfill. But don't worry, if you're throwing cans in the black bin, they're being recycled as it's pretty straightforward to sort them out and contamination isn't an issue with metals. But PET bottles in the black bin are invariably going to incineration.

I get a lot of free cans and bottle, I cash em in, and buy coal, free coal😄

On another note... where will this re-turn scam end? Yesterday in Tesco.

Products developed by a third party have nothing to do with the scheme.

I've been negative about this scheme in the past (and I definitely haven't been won over) but I've had my first positive experience of it because of the Lidl app.

I'm a non-driver who lives 2km from my handiest Re-turn machines. Some people have suggested bringing a few bottles and cans at a time, which I'm not mad about because you have the hassle of doing to Re-turn thing for a little scrap of paper worth only a euro-ish that I'd easily forget about or lose. Also, if the machines aren't working, you can't bring your shopping home in the bags we were planning on emptying.

Anyway, I used the Lidl app when depositing my returns. A lot of the problems still exist but not having to deal with the stoopid receipt makes it a bit more bearable. It doesn't give you much time before scanning and making the first deposit (the first time, it logged me out before I got my first bottle out) but once you start, it seems more 'patient'.

During the week, I had my first machine blockage and wondered if my deposits would be saved…and they were, so that's a good feature. I finished at the machine beside it, and the app had registered both lots of deposits.

The first time I tried to use the deposit via the app when shopping, there was an error that a manager would have had to fix but I suggested to cancel it because there was a big queue and I was in no rush to use it. The next time, there was no error.

but I've had my first positive experience of it because of the Lidl app.

I'm struggling to see anything positive about your experience TBH.

Sounds like an absolute head melt.

Oh, it isn't great but the receipt thing always annoyed me so at least that is not a thing for me anymore. That's the positive thing. Just set the app for the deposit to be used or not, and you don't have to think about it (unless it causes at error at the till. 😉).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,671 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

At least the receipt worked. The App sounds at best very buggy.

Do you remember the good old days when you could offer 100% of these containers for recycling and you didn't have to use an app or call a manager or go on an adventure to find a machine that was actually working?

Honestly if an App that occasionally works is seen as a positive it just goes to show how not fit for purpose this whole scam is and how people have been completely brow beating by it.

I find the Lidl app a good improvement. I've never bothered returning the bottles after a few crappy experiences at the start. I decided to give this a go and have had a couple of tries now with the Lidl app now without issue. Scanning the QR code and it going straight onto the Lidl Plus App is so much handier than the hassle of getting the paper receipt and then having to present it at the till. It's small enough amounts but there's theadded benefit of the green bin not filling up as quickly now.

Dealz behind Eyre Square in Galway city must have the worst machine in the country, it's been out of order 90% of the time since Feb 2024, and they even have a sign on the machine saying, If you have any problems with this machine contact Re=turn Ireland, which we know is completely wrong, but I'd hate to be the kids working there on minimum wage having to deal with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,241 ✭✭✭George White

Centra in Bray keep telling em to contact Ret-run, I told them that Re-turn told me to contact them. Just a circle of bureaucracy.

Re-turn are correct, the Centra are not. They own the machine, they need to maintain it.

Dealz owner is in a terrible financial state so they may not be able to afford to repair them.

Not necessarily. It completely depends on the circumstance.

Retailers can only source RVMs from a Re-Turn approved list of suppliers.

If that supplier has supplied a dog shít machine or is not providing adequate maintenance service that is partly Re-Turns problem.

So the sign could be completely accurate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,575 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

True, but it's far more likely that the store just isn't emptying it quickly enough or clearing blockages/etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,671 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

Well no. That's not the likely culprit at all. Why would they bother putting up a sign to contact Re-Turn if it just needed emptying or quick cleaning?

The problem with the approved suppliers from what I can see, is none of them are Irish. At best they have an Irish Sales Person listed, so God knows how many maintenance personal are on the road. Judging by the amount of machines I see shuttered and the length of time they are inoperable, I imagine not enough.

Also standard warranty on them seems to be 12 months.

If the machines are not fit for purpose and there isn't adequate maintenance, that should be Re-Turns problem as they are ones who sourced the suppliers and made it mandatory to use them.

I never had any problem with a machine. I do not regard that as being lucky, seeing that well over 2 billion containers have been processed. If there was a widespread problem, it would be all over the media. Machine owners and their staff should not lack for information on how to keep the machines running well.

    Is it just me or?

Rescam a company foisted upon the Irish public, which mandates if you want to join their merry band of collectors, buy only their recommended machines, posts on a website fecking maintenance tips! FFS!

I never had any problem with a machine

Literally no one on here is shocked at that claim.

Machine owners and their staff should not lack for information on how to keep the machines running well.

How to replace the receipt roll and how to empty the bag?

You didn't even read your own link, did you?

    😂

I'm sure it's been asked before, but what happens if the machine says certain cans are not accepted? I have some soft drinks (Eastern European brand) and Carling cans from someone who brought them with them over Christmas. They all have the Re-Turn logo printed on them, but the machine doesn't recognise them.

Use this link and check if the barcode shows they are part of the scheme.

If they are not and you paid a deposit take them back to the shop.

You can report the barcodes to re-turn who should get it sorted out.

There are definitely some spurious stuck on logos on imports that aren't actually registered, impossible to prevent that as its criminality by the importer; but omissions can be corrected.

There was a form to do this on their website, but I can't find it now. Their website has been crap since day 1. info@re-turn.ie by email should do it, give them the barcode number and the details of what it is.
