Hmmm… Not awful! Actually, kinda enjoyed it.

Plenty of little things to nitpick, and I'm not at all interested yet in Caleb's search for his mum or whatever beef he has with Paul Giamatti. But as an intro to the characters, setting, and tone so far – I'd say first impressions are a lot better than Discovery at least.

Holly Hunter's not just phoning it in. Thought she was great.

Doctor has something interesting going on, and wasn't brought in with any sort of gimmick or 4th-wall-breaking fanfare. Looking forward to knowing more, and it's nice too see him.

Paul Giamatti – well, it's Paul Giamatti! Pretty good. Character seems like a typical modern Trek villain, pointy ship and all. But, it's Paul Giamatti! Could be worse.

The cadets – some interesting characters there too. I'm sure some of the teen drama stuff is going to be annoying but they haven't overdone it in the pilot at least.

    Nice intro!
    Ship is awful
Holographic student - WTF? But she might be an interesting character
Klingon who likes to watch birds - WTF?
    Computer voice sounds about 18
Captain just slouching over the chair
Why is the bridge so massive?
The Doctor isn't the Doctor I remember

It's not gelling with me yet...at least it's not Discovery bad yet...

    On to episode 2
p.s. some of the audio is terrible, struggle to understand what they're saying

went in with Low expectations, after two episodes I had to sit with a while before finally accepting that I actually enjoyed it.

Its definitely a lot better than Discovery ever was.

We get a proper intro to all the characters unlike Discovery.

There is actually proper team work here among the crew too unlikpe Discovery.

So yes a good start. It even has some none intentianely humour in places like TOS, TNG , DS9 and maybe Voyager always had.

I went in thinking I would not like it but so far its not too bad. The ship is certainly different.

    Peace and long life.

Pure cringe, ship looks like AI slop, stupid Star Wars robots doing the R2D2 beep-boop everywhere. I cannot stand that captain with her stupid grin at everything, feet up in the captains chair. Not going to bother with this one either, gutted. I just hate that this is the direction they've gone with Trek, we'll probably never get back to proper Trek now.

EDIT: And why are they leaning so hard into the stupid Reddit-speech thats going to be completely outdated in 6 months time? "Hangry" "Ive had a day" etc. Its just so stupid. At least we'll get a couple of good Redlettermedia videos out of it.

    It's not just me then!

The ship is horrible. It's like the ship from the 2009 movie that had been even more over engineered.

What is with all the droids floating around?

Some of the names are going to take some getting used to and I hope some of the cadets get less irritating with time.

It also occurs to me that the basic plot so far is similar to the plot of Police Academy where a troubled young man is forced to go to the Academy instead of going to jail, and has difficulty fitting in and taking orders etc. Which is ornic because Kim Cattral was in Police Acadmey and also played Valeris in ST VI.

And yes the audio is terrible, I had to turn the volume up high and even then struggle to catch everything.

And they clearly dont have any Ozempic in the 31st Century.

And seriously, there is far too much techno-babble.

    Just finished the first episode.

90210 in space about covers it alright, complete with contemporary language, slang, references and gestures.

Stupid misplaced humor and "comedy" throughout.

Holly Hunter's slouching in the captain's chair feels completely wrong for a commanding officer in a military organisation.

    The awful first officer character.

The overarching plot is clearly Star Trek Academy - the Search for Mommy!

I said I'd give it both episodes but having watched Caleb just spin in his chair at the start of the second to give his "rival" the double finger... Nah, I'm out!

How big is the ship aswell and what is the layout that crew have to sprint across a college campus every time they want to get to a different console?

Oh yeah, "You hacked our communication system and gave away our location to an enemy that nearly killed us (nobody died in all those massive explosions ripping through the ship?) just to contact your mommy, but you showed initiative, that means you have command potential!"

How do you make Paul Giamatti so cringe aswell? Such a waste of potential, same as Discovery, same as New Worlds, its sickening.

EDIT: Also did Paul Giamatti get away in a Federation escape pod? What?

There's a lot I could pick at but I think it's good enough for the target audience to like it. Ya I get the 90210 joke but is it really that different to Buffy which every young TNG fan I knew loved.

On a personal level the one thing that I am very worried is gonna change me to "fuk off and die this is an alternate timeline" is it seems like now that we have had the TOS, TNG and VOY Kurtz era show this one seems to be milking DS9 and if it fuks with DS9 I will never forgive it. I have heard in reviews that there is a later episode which may do exactly that.

I predict episodes along the lines of...

Quidditch episode (more tame than Code of Honor)

Prom episode (more chaste than Naked Now)

"To follow knowledge like a sinking star..." (Tennyson's Ulysses)

Like some others, I didn't hate it, but I don't love it either.

Not sure about Holly Hunter at all - is she the same species as Carol Kane's character in SNW (Long-living)? Can't stand Carol Kane's character! And she's tiny!

Paul Giamatti played....well, Paul Giamatti. As ever he does.

The crew (apart from the Klingon\Jem'hadar hybrid) looked instantly forgettable (just like Disco). Nice to see the Doc, he has evolved into a grumpy old hologram!

Amazing how all the cadets on their first day knew how to resolve the crisis - hoping Caleb doesn't become another Burnham. Are he and the Klingon the new Tom Paris and Harry Kim?

SAM is the new Tilly (and I didn't like Tilly)

I'll watch a bit more to give it a chance (heaven help me,I stuck with Disco!)

And yes, I couldn't hear it properly in places (right from the start) - thank Gowran for subtitles!)

Im just going to wait and binge the season, depending on what people say.

The resounding message seems to be 'its not as bad as discovery' - which is positive.

Although saying any star trek series/movie isnt as bad as the worst chapter in trek history - its not a high bar to jump.

I cannot help but hate the period its set in. And obviously there will be some cross over with Disco, which i will skip. I never want to see Michael Burnham again in Trek.

Iv been glossing past spoilers, and really just getting first impressions. so i dont really know anything about the plot.

Il just keep an eye on whats said here and elsewhere. Iv more or less decided that if the first season doesnt cut the mustard - il be abandoning Academy, and hoping for something better in the future. Really rooting for something along the lines of Star Trek Legacy with 7of9 and the new Enterprise G.

Nobody who hates really Disco is gonna like Academy so just don't bother. It's way too similar.

The only major difference is this show admits it's for hormonal children unlike Discovery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,322 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

I opted to binge the first 2 episodes and couldn't finish the second ep.

I came into it with a very open mind, with the bar set low.

    The positives:

The Klingon character looks and behaves like a klingon, No, redesign of how Klingons look a la Disco. So that's good.

And, thats the only good thing I can say about it. I've already listed some of the things I don't like but that's just scraping the surface and I don't want to bore people.

The modern prosthetics look terrible though. Just so plastic looking which I assume is a money saving thing. The lad is also just needs to stop trying to sound like he has a deep voice.

I did get a bit of The Dark Knight meets Darth Vader from his voice, but I wanted to post something positive.

I have to remain open to it - thats what i am aiming for. Its not been difficult to just get a sense of what people think of each episode - without getting into spoiler territory. Right now the only thing I know, is that there is a half Klingon/JemHadar in it. ANd supposedly Bajor features in it. And BetaZed. That and what ever was given away in the trailer. Oh and someone referred to a Klingon who bird watches?? lol

Il just wait, but im not gonna carry on throughout the series if this season sucks. I did that with disco, and i actually defended it rather passionately at times. Especially in s1 and s2 -

I couldnt agree more RE not wanting this to **** over DS9s legacy. The inclusion of the Sisko references in the trailer was annoying.

I hate hated discovery. And I enjoyed the first two episodes of this. Maybe it was the hope of rebuilding the federation that’s pulling me in. I thought the acting was better , no one was crying every ten minutes. Klingons look like Klingons. The doc was good , thought it would be a gimmick having him back. Holly hunter was good in it , like her background. Even the younger cast were not cringe to me for the most part.

I went in with zero expectations after watching section 31 ( which is worse than discovery !) maybe that’s why I enjoyed it.

I didn't hate season 1 and 2 of Disco. I disliked a few things they did, like retconning Klingons and making Burnham Spock's half sister. Also the fact it might as well have been called ST: Michael Burnham because not only was she the central character but she could always save the day in the nick of time. I'm hoping they wont make the same mistake with Caleb

Literally unwatchable for me....i cant even bring myself to hate watch it...

Im a huge DS9 fan and in my mind there has been no Star Trek made since Enterprise.

He somehow saved the ship by hacking the communications array. When introducing a new crew, or in this case a class of recruits, it's nice if they introduce each of their strengths, so it would have been an nice opportunity for maybe hologram girl to step in and work some computery magic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,678 ✭✭✭gipi

She did, didn't she? She did the frequency calculations for Caleb do he could go and save the day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,657 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Early Discovery had great acting too. Just like Academy they made the right call of hiring amazing actors for the captain roles. The problem was turning them Mirror Universe in the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,322 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

I just feel there could have been more emphasis on her contribution. It felt reminisent of Tilly doing some calculations and then Burnham saving the day.

There's a saying, it takes a village to raise a child. I would say it takes a crew to save a ship, it can't be down to one guy or girl to save the day all the time.

    Edit:

I was actually hoping the first officer would not survive because I find her irritating with her shouty speaking style.

Well I thought it was flat out bad. So jammed full of tired tropes and ridiculous contrivances, the most mundane and assinine plot, bad dialogue, terrible "comedy" and what some might call character quirks but I'd call irritating nonsense, like the captain cosied up in the bridge chair reading a book with glasses on, and all the rest.

I thought Discovery was also poor enough but I think it's importantly to say more so as it went on, I would say the first season of Discovery was quite a lot better than this.

I would give it a 4/10. I don't know if I'll even watch the rest of it. I stopped watching Discovery once I realised I was not enjoying it anymore, something just having a label attached isn't a good enough reason to keep going.

She did. She broke the code.

Sat down with the kids today and watched it. Really enjoyed it. I loved the nod to the Star Trek legends on the wall. The kids of course didn't get it. Nice to see some of the old characters back.

The 5 got to show their skills in saving the djem hadar and saving the ship from the bad guy.

We're looking forward to the rest of it.
