    Waldseemüller Map (1507)

    "

Nicknamed America's Birth Certificate, it is the first document on which the name "America" appears. It is also the first map to depict a separate and full Western Hemisphere and the first map to represent the Pacific Ocean as a separate body of water. The Library of Congress famously paid $10,000,000 for this map."

Odd that gaeilge is most different. I guess over time the Br in Bráthair (as in monk) must've morphed to Dea…

Is there a map version for Deirfúir?

Those were commonly used (esp at Christmas) among certain milk producers in Ireland (often the west) during the 1980s.

Never saw those, but did see all the old generations of Tetra packaging as it seems that Donegal Creameries would use second hand kit.

Just about remember the actual tetrahedral ones that you had to empty in to a normal jug; and then for ages they still used the book-shaped ones where you could ram a plastic handle around one side of it to turn the carton in to a jug. Some supermarket own brand fruit juice is still in those shapes.

They've changed to the same shape as other milk companies in the last decade or so.

That map clearly shows the mountain ranges that were produced when India collided with Asia. A recent event as these thing go.

Tetrahedral packaging was the norm for cream at one stage unless my memory is fading. We lived I. The east coast but spent Christmases in Connemara and I rember the bags of milk and the jug (orange I think) which came with them. My granny used to freeze some of them. They had a car and were thus unusual in the neighbourhood but she liked having extra supplies of fresh milk. I’d say the jug was still in the house when we sold it just before lockdown.

Yeah, I spent a lot of my youth in Leitrim where milk was sold in tetrahedral packs (by NCF I think).

Bráthair is the original word for 'brother' in Irish, but it took on the meanings of 'kinsman' or 'brother' in the religious sense. So to specify that 'son of the same parents' was meant the prefix dearbh- ('genuine', 'real') was added to the word: dearbh-bhráthair. The pronunciation and spelling simplified over time giving the modern standard form Deartháir.
The same thing happened with 'sister': siúr > deirbh-shiúr > deirfiúr.
